Mozilla Firefox 2.0 Released

Advertisement (Why?)
Mozilla has just officially launched Firefox 2.0! Although the final release was posted to their FTP servers earlier today, Mozilla waited until around 17:30 EST to put the official launch site up.

New features include:
  • Visual Refresh: Firefox 2's theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience.
  • Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page.
  • Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button.
  • Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms
Spread Firefox coordinator Asa Dotzler commented on the release in his blog:

"Two years ago an amazing community of Firefox contributors set the world on fire (and not in that Sony battery way) with the release of Firefox 1.0. One year ago, when we came together and pushed Firefox 1.5 into the mainstream, proving that we were a force to be reckoned with. Today, with the release if Firefox 2, we're setting a new standard for user safety, control, and fun on the Web."

It was a joke for you to even post anything. Not everyone can sit at their computers 12+ hours a day. This is new news for alot of people, and that is the main reason I come to this site. Old or new news to some individuals, the format of this site is really setup nice. I've been gone for a few months on the job, and the new format does really look good. Good job Neo Mods.

Ahh D-M, I thought that even without the note at the end, people would get the joke. Y'know, cuz the stir that mozilla made about people posting this yesterday is all the talk at the moment and I was poking fun at them for not getting to announce it before everyone else did.
But then I though some people might jump to conclusions, so I added the note at the end to clear up any misunderstandings. Between that and you getting your knickers in a twist, I don't know what happened. Maybe in future I'll bold the "this is a joke" font, or maybe I'll make a big update on my LJ explaining everything behind the joke and put a link to that instead. I'm sorry if my joke was too vauge, too abstract or for whatever reason, just went over your head, but rest assured I will try much much harder in future to make it clear that I'm actually joking, just in case the likes of you missed that very obvious point.

Note: This is sarcasm.
#2.4 Z3r0 on 25 Oct 2006 - 04:07
I think he got confused because of the 'Note: This is a joke' ... it could be misconstrued as meaning 'This product/situation is a joke' if you ignore the Note blah blah etc etc

I feel like I am participating in the old forum joke.... how many forum members does it take to reply to a post... I think you know the one I mean... it goes something like this... 1 to post, 1 to comment that there's a spelling mistake, 1 to flame the person who made the spelling mistake, 1 to flame the flamer of the person who made the spelling mistake, 1 to flame the person who commented that there was a spelling mistake, 1 to flame all the flamers of the person who commented that there was a spelling mistake.... oh yes... 1 person to actually give the right answer to the question :p

Note: I am being perfectly serious.

How do you know if I wasnt joking??

Joking or sarcasm (in your mind), there is no need to put Z's replacing S's on the end of the sentence. The warez scene was gone back in the late 90's, early 2000's, that's OLD NEWZ. Nothing flew over my head, as it might have bothered me with your worthless post, just as my reply bothered you because of your worthless post. Think about it.

Note: Nobody here is right or wrong, and I don't think anyone really cares.

Dude the Z was part of the joke, y'know because people that post "old news" are generally retards anyway.
Seriously, chill the hell out, there's a scroll bar at the side if you don't like a particular post.

And the spell checker r0x0rz j00r s0x0rz, you know you can't deny that.

I was reluctant to switch and have been using Maxthon, but wow, I can't stop using this baby. Love it to death.
#17.1 duhk on 25 Oct 2006 - 08:15
Me too, I was using Maxthon before. It's a good browser. I tried earlier firefox builds but didn't like it at all for certain reasons. Then I gave firefox 2 release candidates a try, and now i'm loving it. Went searching for extensions to make it work like how i was using Maxthon. Got everything working the way I wanted, and it's even better! My recent purchase of a faster processor has a little to do with the switch as well.

Anyone read Paul Thurrot's review of FF 2.0? After bashing IE for years, he's actually recommending switching from Mozilla to old IE7 technology simply because of the lack of features and the changes to the UI that he finds unusable!!!! Since when did usability outweigh security?

http://www.windowsitpro.com/windowspaulthu...rott_93992.html
#19.1 rm20010 on 25 Oct 2006 - 01:53
Since IE7 became less insecure than it used to be.

You can't expect someone to hold onto their opinions for life, do you? They (the browser vendors) continue to please their crowds, or they end up disappointing them. Simple as that; there's no expectation of any unconditional arse kissing going around.

BTW, that's not really a review. I find that post a step up from a blog post.
#19.2 guinnessman on 25 Oct 2006 - 01:59
He's complaining because not all of themes and extensions work, which wouldn't be all that hard to fix, but it's up to the individuals, nothing that the FF team can really do. Although, if he thinks FF 2.0 is ugly compared to IE7... and the options menu is essentially the same as 1.5x.
#19.3 Z3r0 on 25 Oct 2006 - 04:17
Wow as if I care what Paul Thurrot says.... I don't understand why people listen to him and also what the hype is all about... he hasn't told me anything I already know.

FF2 is great tho, I thought it was going to be **** when I first got the Alpha, but it's turned out gr8, I only use 4 plugins, adblock plus, filterset.g and downloadthemall! and they all work great.

I'm not one of those people who has to modify their entire browsing experience or even makes use of most of the extra features like RSS on a regular basis...

Also I actually prefer IE6 to IE7, I find the whole interface experience has changed too much for me and it's frustrating.

I have to wonder how many times MS will make me validate my copy of Windows before I die.... it's kind of depressing, I go to download IE7, I have to validate, I go to install IE7, I have to validate. Also validation is broke under FF.

Then there's all the stupid popup messages 'Microsoft have decided to make your browsing experience *more secure*, nothing will work unless you click on a popup 50x' ... goooooo MS (p.s. Welcome to Windows Vista), More secure for whom? people who are clueless about the net and/or go in search of virii?

if paul thinks different, that doesn't mean he thinks wrong. choose for yourself.
#19.5 AnalogKid82 on 25 Oct 2006 - 14:13
It's only a matter of time before hackers start to exploit IE7, yet the attacks on FF remain very few. I still don't trust IE. It's still IE with old IE code, regardless of the "security" improvements in IE7. I realize Paul flip flops, but he's been against IE for many years now, praising FF, as do I, and now says that FF2's lack of features and degraded usability justify switching browsers, let alone switching to IE over FF?
(1 reply) #20 +liberation07 on 25 Oct 2006 - 01:25
I just finished downloading Firefox 2.0. Upon first glance, I'm impressed. I'm glad that they finally added a close button to each tab. It makes life a whole lot easier for me when I'm on my Macbook, without a middle mouse button. Having to control-click a tab in order to close it was a royal pain.

I'm also digging this built in spell checker. Safari doesn't work with Vox, so I've had to use Firefox whenever I blog. Unfortunately, the built in spell checker in Vox will often miss certain spelling errors. Between the built in spell checker for when I blog, and the one button tab closing on my Macbook, I can definitely see myself moving from Safari to Firefox permanently.
#20.1 LTD on 25 Oct 2006 - 03:40
Interesting. On OS X, new pages *do not* open in new tabs, yet they are supposed to. I keep having to right-click and select to open in a new tab. I have the option to open new pages in a *new tgab* checked in the prefs. What gives??

So, it won't let us update from 1.5.0.7 to 2.0 from the update feature in the help menu? Maybe it's was planned for all 1.5.x only and same will apply for 2.0 that will let us update to every 2.0.x revision only.
#22.1 Cryton on 25 Oct 2006 - 11:06
Users on 1.5.0.7 will have to update to 1.5.0.8 which contains new update code that lets users update to 2.0. But Mozilla may wait until 2.0.0.1 is out before pushing the major update to 1.5.0.x users.
#22.2 Havin_it on 25 Oct 2006 - 12:52
Am I alone in thinking that's extremely poor form on Mozilla's part? They should be promoting the use of the update mechanism, but instead they're forcing everyone to make a full download - or wait for god-knows-how-long (maybe never) until they get off their arses and release 1.5.0.8. Those releases should have been concurrent, so adherent updaters (and low-bandwidth folks for whom it's really important) wouldn't have to wait around for it.

i m having problems with Firefox 2, I got quicktime 7 installed, the latest version & it doesn't play embeded videos in the webpages

Insted of the video playing i get this problem. I M also having the same problem with IE 7 though.

(1 reply) #30 Coolme on 25 Oct 2006 - 06:32
boo.. it doesn't look as good as Fx 2.0 RC2, (in fact, I hate how the tabs and buttons look in the RC3/final) and it's a lot slower than Fx 2.0 RC2. RC2 has everything that I need, and I don't see a reason to upgrade. Try RC2 and RC3/final, and you'll know what I am talking about.

P.S. if anyone can recommend me a fast Fx build, (trunk or branch as long as it's stable) please do.
#30.1 Z3r0 on 25 Oct 2006 - 07:17
works great for me, maybe you have a slow PC or you need a defrag....

anyways just google 'firefox SSE' for some optimised builds if you're that worried..

#32.1 +mrbester on 25 Oct 2006 - 09:17
I'm surprised that it worked in any non-IE browser. Banks don't have a clue when it comes to thar Intarweb, but should someone be able to drain your account through their insistence on IE, it won't be their fault...

Absolutely hate the new theme. Makes me feel like I am browsing in a dark grey rain cloud.
#34 +shirike on 25 Oct 2006 - 08:27
It still lock-ups randomly and fails to display more than a few pages.

Back to 1.5.0.7 until mozilla can put a decent release together. In-line spell check is NOT a massive step forward for me.

Where can i turn spell check off? 'cause it's in different language and in every form i type, there's always these hypnotic red thingies. and yes, i know, that there is no spell checker for latvian.
:EDIT: figured it out. open about:config, search for the string "layout.spellcheckDefault" and set value to zero. voila!

firefox has always been my 3rd favourite behind opera and IE7 but it does seem to be an improvement over 1.x for me

like others i'm struggling to find the major changes that warrant a whole new version number but perhaps these alterations are under the surface.
#39 jimmy_jazz on 25 Oct 2006 - 09:41
Very impressed, I like the fact that the tabs have a close button now, and RSS feeds are so much easier to set-up.

BTW The spell checker does not seem to be installed by default in the English UK version, you have to add the dictionary first.

I was surprised I could even tell a difference, but it's a big difference . Although I had a problem trying to click on that smiley just now. I had to type it in. Looks nicer, and seems faster than IE7 too.

Funny thing though. FF is my primary browser, but when I upgraded to IE7 final when it was released, FF seemed to run faster. Anyone else noticed that?

In all honesty FF2 is kind of a let-down for me. I think i'll stick with IE7 for now.
#45.1 xploit1030 on 25 Oct 2006 - 16:26
I agree mostly. I was expecting more from 2.0, I just upgraded today from 1.5. I installed IE7 when that came out and honestly the only advantage (for me) the Firefox has over IE7 is the spell check and the Adblock plugin that I love so much. (Which I'm sure a similar one will eventually come around to plug-in to IE7.)

I don't know what I else I thought would be added in but I feel like IE has mostly caught up. For now I'm mostly going to use IE since it is already on every machine I work with, although I'll keep both installed on my desktop. Maybe the next version of Firefox will blow my socks off, but this one feels like a dud to me.
#45.2 xMorpheousx416 on 25 Oct 2006 - 17:05
Since the two of you only state that it's a let down for you, I can only "assume" that you think "glass" is everything...that a fancy UI makes up for what's not under the hood.

You don't state what you expected to see in FF 2.0, ....you just say you were expecting more? What more??

If it's a "glass" effect you're looking for, go HERE.

If it's a fancy out of this world theme you were looking for, you should have known that wasn't coming...but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Is it just me, or is the new icon set a complete step backwards? 1.5 default theme looks much better.
