Take a look at how the Windows Vista packaging will open up to reveal the media inside. Also, it is our first peak at what the Windows Vista discs will actually look like.
I like what they’ve done with the disc. The design on the disc is unique and fresh. Microsoft has adopted pretty much the same looking holographic CD/DVD’s since Windows 2000 and its nice to see it be given a fresh new look - which seems to be a reoccurring theme with the Windows Vista packaging in general.

Thing is, in case you have forgotten, Windows XP never came in a CD case too (at least not my Home Edition copy...). It came with a cardboard box, with a glossy-looking folder with a CD clipped on the middle page. It NEVER fitted in my CD rack ever...
I know I'm old and jaded but it's just a box! (I didn't fight in three world wars for this and what's more I remember when all this were fields etc. etc.)

Don't be such a grouch. I too agree that this is not necessarily any picture of it's fundamental functions. It is however a very valuable tool for Home users. Marketing is a big part of any MS release...you should all realise that now.
An OS is probably the most expensive software purchase a computer owner will make. havign a nice looking box on the bookshelf, not stacked among cheap games, is nice, let's you keep a hold of where you have all those manuals and stuff. and a bit of pride in knowing and shwoign you have the full legal version, bought and paid for.
Absolutely; great for propping your door open, killing insects and raising a monitor to eye-level with. That's a proper OS for you and no mistaking.
Eee, 'e were a great coder were my Dad.. (That's a Hovis advert 'joke' for those too young/out of Britain to understand)

(shrugs) Each to their own, I suppose. All my software boxes invariably end up in another big box in the attic. With Vista coming on I imagine it will be the most expensive software purchase for most owners, yes (mine was probably thanks to Adobe I would say, and yes, that's in the attic too!
I'm actually 'only' 34 (nearly 35) but I'm genuinely left cold by this packaging and a bit bemused by the warm reception it's had. But then, what do I know..?
As packaging goes, I suppose it's decorative, but as you intimate, will it still be decorative with the dust gathered on it?
You had your own Dad when you were young? We had to borrow one from around the village.
Good to know someone else noted it
Using IE7 and setting the zoom level to 400% makes this clearly apparent. It's just the shine due to the curved edge of the package that gives the false impression at 100% view.
Thanks.
I hope you are joking, right? I can make you prettier cases for your $1000000 which you may or may not have atm
You were warned....
You were warned....
is that why Macs suck?

Owned :p
Is that still the Beta1 version of the case, or is it a RC2 or RTM ??? When are thry going to look at releasing a SP1 for the case ???
Ahahahahahahahahahahah!!! That's a good one!!
All of you B&M'ing over it, buy Vista and send me the packaging.
Looks great!
Crash it?
Seriously, the case is very nice, it follows MS's business strategy these days: "Function follows form".
Oh I have, thats why I switched to Mac. But I am still curious, lol. Not curious enough to buy it myself but I am curious enough to use it on a family members pc or something
Oh, and it's "peek" not "peak".
lool torrent file yaa thats what before it even reaches stores it would be all over the net getting pirated. :-(
anywasy the design is quite attractive so they can get people to buy it reall quick.
Anyways the packaging is a good move for microsoft. They finally have a good sense of style when it comes to their products now

Not to nit-pick, but you do realise that if you had a 3D printer, the torrent could provide a cad based diagram which would allow you to print out the case for your DVDR, and thus, proving the original poster correct
i'm glad their making it look so nice, really!
Im drooling over the case still
haha.. I so hate to fess up - but I reckon I'm with you on this! *grrr*
But now I gotta pay $200. extra for Windows Vista just for the fancy case, I wonder how much an OEM version without the fancy case would cost. ?
Well I do actually like it, though I'm not to keen on the folding out idea, I can see some health and safety law suits against m$
Microsoft is cutting corners with Vista! Beautiful!
Microsoft is cutting corners with Vista! Beautiful!
And replacing them with smoothed out versions!
you realize that there is an opposite side to the box where information such as that will likely appear don't you?
So there we have it: a 32 bit disc to use on 32-bit machines, and a 64 bit disc to use when someone upgrades to a 64-bit processor (or when the support for 64-bit machines is there).
This brings me to one question: if they include a 32- and 64- bit disc, can someone install Vista on a 32-bit PC and a 64-bit PC at the same time?
Again with no documentation, just a shiny box with a shiny $400 disc...
i'm gonna bet, apple will do something similar (maybe even cooler) with the next OsX release... & then they gonna say they did it first (maybe it will be a metal case or some different material than the Vista case)...
And, somebody above asked why it doesn't say if it's 32 or 64 bit.. atren't all versions of vista except starter edition, which isn't even available in first world countries, supposed to have both?
It will be your product key that determines which version loads....unless something changed since I last read up.
Also upgrading to a "higher" version will be from the same disc, it will be key from MS that activates it.
....can hear hackers rubbing their hands with glee.

So...you don't get both, then. Is that right? If a person buys Home Premium, they don't have te license to install either the 32 or 64 bit version?
where are the links/pictures? All i see is the article, a ad then the comments.
it shows up in firefox 2.0 and IE7
You can have a real ugly woman/man jump out of the prettiest birthday cake!
Bottom line... How many auto updates/patches/security fixes are we gonna have to go through before it actually 'works' properly and a**holes arent hacking it to buggery?
Is it gonna do 'what it says on the tin'? -- Hmm...
How many years has it taken these guys to get their poo together and sort this out?
Who cares about the box and the 'fancy' graphics -- are you gonna look at the box after you install this OS? Unless thats you're buzz of course!
You're looking at minimum 800Mb of system memory to have any chance of running it in a reasonable manner. (Thats at Idle!
It wont install on FAT32 partitions.
7GB HD space for installation.
Make your own minds up... Forget the box and 'cool' disk... think about it a bit more!
PEACE!
