Symantec has released a public beta of its Norton Internet Security 2007 and Norton AntiVirus 2007 suites for Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Vista operating system. While the software supports both 32 and 64-bit versions of the operating system, Symantec stressed that it still requires access to Microsoft's Patchguard security technology that is built into the 64-bit version of the operating system.

"Elements of the security software will still work, but Patchguard will prevent all of them from functioning," a company spokesperson told vnunet.com. The Symantec betas, however, target consumers. Patchguard is a limited issue for the consumer segment because the vast majority of such users are expected to run the 32-bit version of the operating system.

Well We'll all just have to move over to NOD 32 then, wich magically manages to do all that Symantec does and more, WITH patchugard, and on far less resources to boot...

Maybe they need patchguard to implement their "suck all the power out of your CPU" module.

Yeah... Funny how the proper AV makers, like Kapersky, have managed to protect Vista 64 perfectly well, without needing the info Symnatec claim is needed...

Even microsoft's own AV works fine with Vista x64's PatchGuard - that's right, the AV most likely to have access to any part of Windows is using the same path that all other good AVs are using.

It does not seem like Symantec are "advancing" anywhere with there security.

Do people really still waste money on their products?

translation: "we've decided to hire and pay programmers to do their jobs instead of whining about our legacy garbageware code no longer working with Vista."

NOD32...period.
