Microsoft Corp. today announced that Windows Live™ Hotmail®, the successor to MSN® Hotmail, is launching globally in 36 languages. The most significant upgrade for Hotmail since it pioneered the webmail industry in 1996, the new service has been built to be a vast improvement over the previous Hotmail offering, having incorporated input from more than 20 million beta testers. Windows Live Hotmail will deliver a safer, more powerful and productive e-mail experience than previous versions with flexible access via the Web, on a mobile phone or with an e-mail client. Microsoft also announced that later this month Windows Live Hotmail customers will be able to access their Windows Live Hotmail e-mail and contacts for free* using Microsoft® Office Outlook® 2003 or Office Outlook 2007 via the new Microsoft Office Outlook Connector beta.

As Windows Live Hotmail begins rolling out on May 7 and continues over the coming days, consumers will be able to visit http://www.hotmail.com to sign up for a new Windows Live Hotmail account. Current MSN Hotmail customers can also update their existing account to Windows Live Hotmail by logging into their account and clicking on the green Join Windows Live Hotmail button.

“We’re thrilled to deliver Windows Live Hotmail to the more than 280 million active MSN Hotmail accounts around the world,” said Steve Berkowitz, senior vice president of the Online Services Group at Microsoft. “Windows Live Hotmail represents an extremely compelling end-to-end e-mail experience that makes it easy for customers to get best-of-breed e-mail access across PCs, mobile devices and the Web. Windows Live Hotmail is a cornerstone online service for Microsoft and a critical part of our online advertising business because e-mail is a key point of influence for consumer purchases. We’re pleased to announce the launch of the service to advertisers in addition to consumers on the eve of the Microsoft Strategic Account Summit.”

Is that actual POP3 support offered or just Outlook specifically? :-/

Edit: oh wait... "Microsoft Office Outlook Connector beta." wtf.. A new *product* just to share mails and contacts?

"a new beta to be known as Windows Live Mail will be made available "in the coming weeks" and will be the successor to both Outlook Express and Windows Mail in Vista as Microsoft's free desktop email client." - Liveside.net

Question: Will everyone over the coming days be forced to switch to Windows Live Hotmail or can they keep the Hotmail interface?
#8 Vandalsquad on 07 May 2007 - 15:09
Sweet as.
#9 illz55 on 07 May 2007 - 15:21
This new Live Hotmail is actually very nice. Too bad it's taken them this long to create a proper rival for Gmail.
#10 mad_cow40 on 07 May 2007 - 15:59

ive already got live mail, but why does it still say beta?
#11.1 illz55 on 07 May 2007 - 16:31
Because it is still in the Beta stage. They have launched it worldwide now but nobody said anything about it going out of Beta just yet. It will soon though.

waiting for the connector now
#13 AthleticTrainer1981 on 07 May 2007 - 16:45
Mines there...kind of interesting though. I have been part of the managed beta since it started and was on bay117 and they switched me over to the non beta portion this morning which is bay140. I kind of liked bay117...made me feel important.
#14 TRC on 07 May 2007 - 16:51
They should have kept the name as Windows Live Mail, it sounds much more professional. Hotmail was bad enough; Windows Live Hotmail sounds really dumb.
#15 nX07 on 07 May 2007 - 17:16
the @live.com is not available though is it?
EDIT:
I just read on the official blog that it is coming within the next few months..

Will Gmail ever get out of beta?
#16.1 lunarworks on 07 May 2007 - 23:12
Does it matter?

Google's "Beta" stuff is beta in name only, really.
#16.2 ec4912 on 08 May 2007 - 11:34
What does that even mean?
#17 Quick Reply on 07 May 2007 - 20:54
Can existing Hotmail accounts be accessed with Outlook Express

#18.2 kupang on 08 May 2007 - 02:13
that trick no longer works dude..
they have patched the bug..
new @live.com registration has been hold off temporarily ..
#18.3 nX07 on 08 May 2007 - 06:05
It will be available in a few months' says the dev blog
(1 reply) #19 rm20010 on 07 May 2007 - 22:28
OK, so www.hotmail.com says you get a 1 GB inbox. mail.live.com says you get a 2 GB inbox. Which one is it? My account that was in beta for sometime is still at 2 GB.
#19.1 rayjin on 08 May 2007 - 01:17
regular hotmail was upped 1GB recently, but for all the people who beta tested live mail got 2GB.. so I guess when you sign up to live hotmail or when converted you will get 2GB. me thinks.
(1 reply) #20 kaozgamer12 on 07 May 2007 - 23:19
I really dont get it. Because I have Verizon with MSN, and they because give me a "Premium" account, I cant switch to Live Mail. I got the same thing when I tried to sign up about 6 months ago, and I get the same thing now.
#20.1 Express on 08 May 2007 - 01:57
Same here. As I understand this we will be switched over in the next couple of months.
(1 reply) #21 Izlude on 08 May 2007 - 03:31
My beta sign disappeared now. I can't wait for the new client, I got a little hasty and tried to setup my live account on the windows mail, but it said it doesn't support HTTP accounts. :p Hurry up and release it guys!!! I want I want!!!

hey, someone already owns izlude@hotmail.com, but I own izlude @ live.com does this mean if he decides to upgrade, it will overwrite my account???
#21.1 nX07 on 08 May 2007 - 06:07
Nope, you will have the @live.com domain and on his end it will just say its' not available. No worries!

I got some hot @live.com emails, too.

Since the UI is available in other languages I guess we will eventually get i.e. @live.no domains pretty soon too
