Between July 1 and September 30, the Blu-ray Disc Association will offer five free movies to new U.S. owners of Blu-ray Disc players (from any company). The deal applies to the PlayStation 3 as well, but unlike the previous generation of Blu-ray players, Sony’s game console isn’t the cheapest option: Sony’s BDP-S300 is currently on the market for $499 – $100 less than the PS3. Although there are hundreds of Blu-ray movies on the market, consumers may only choose five movies out of a selection of 21. Furthermore, the five movies selected must be from different categories as determined on the offer form.

Before someone says something about those free movies counting towards Blu-Ray sales, forget it, they don't.

They've counted the free movies as sales in the past and if someone wants to comment on it they can.

Indeed. When they've produced the figures in the past they have counted the number of discs sent to distributors as sales rather than physical sales in shops.

No they have NEVER counted freebies as sales since Nielsen *only* accounts for sales.

They also always have noted "shipped" vs. sales.

This is the first time they have made an offer like this. The free disc shipped with BD players and the PS3 were never counted as sales. There was also never free coupons with the PS3 either. Those were $10 rebates on select titles.

That is different from the HD DVD method at Best Buy or Circuit City where they reduce the ring-up price of the main item and then ring up the discs as either full retail or reduced price. ($399 player + 5 free discs rings up something like $299 for the player and the discs at $20).

that deal sucks... "the five movies selected must be from different categories as determined on the offer form." ... so technically it aint "5 free movies of YOUR choice" sorta thing like it SHOULD be cause paying 499 dollars for a blu-ray player aint pocket change.

I guess they shouldn't have bothered then?

a little variety never hurts, and im sure they hope you to get the types of movies you wouldn't ordinarily buy, like them, then buy more of the same.

anyway, i'd take 5 randoms over just 1 Talladega rated anyway, even though i like that film.

It's better than nothing. Decides, even if you don't like the movies on the list, you can get them and then sell them cheap to someone else.

One word for you my friend... "Shake and Bake!" ...err, that's three.

Now if the rumormill serves correct, a slash in PS3 prices (hopefully by Sept 30th) and 5 free movies could equate to a new PS3 owner >>me<< I could see Sony using the 5 free movies deal and milking all sales they can up to Sept 30th and then slashing prices after (if they do). Getting a double deal is too good to be true huh?

Let's see what HD-DVD retaliates with.
#3.1 +DrCheese on 29 Jun 2007 - 10:06
HD-DVD already did this months ago, this is blu-ray retaliating to that
#3.2 Samboini on 29 Jun 2007 - 12:04
Must of missed it

No, but we will surely see more trolls before the day is finished. PeterTHX and Bhav like to do the same.

So posting accurate information and correcting FUD is trolling?

If you can prove my information innacurate by all means do so.
