Microsoft has finally commented on the much criticized Ultimate Extras.

"We want to let our Windows Vista Ultimate customers know that we are actively working to deliver the remaining Extras that we identified in January. Our goal is to provide the highest-quality, most secure and reliable offerings, and as a result we are continuing our work on these offerings. We apologize for taking so long to provide a status update to customers."

Microsoft intends to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. The company also confirmed the ultimate extras team expect to disclose a schedule of further Extras releases after the release of DreamScene and the remaining 20 language packs.

There you go guys, microsoft is responding to your queries, with the amount of critics,it's impossible to answer and give happiness to everybody.

Give them a Break!

Language packs?

LANGUAGE PACKS?

How in unholy tarnation does that qualify as an "Ultimate Extra"?!

All I saw in that post was "We're still trying to fix DreamScene, wish us luck!" and "We'll tell you what we're thinking on working on next (with suitably vague delivery promise) after we've finished this first doodad - promise!"

Bleh.

I totally agree with you.
It certainly seems a Language pack would apply to all versions of Vista... not just as an Ultimate Extra.

There already is ~18 Language packs available for the Ultimate version... I'd be interested in what the other 20 are...

Of course.. poor old Microsoft.. they've barely got enough programmers to stretch round as they're so under financed and struggling to find talented folks to work in the Windows team!

Come on.. they're the worlds biggest software company, Windows is their flagship product, and Ultimate was supposed to be the best version of Windows they ever made.. so for them so slack off on developing for that is completely inexcusible IMHO. It should have been way up the radar, more so than things like their Google competing products, etc.

Cmon,the problem isn't money,we all know that,it's time of coding,we can add,that they're working on lot's of proyects,not only this one.Don't whinne please.

U guys think dreamscene is easy to code?

Nothing is easy to code when we need compatibility for infinite computer configurations and languages

No; but I wouldn't spend all of my extra time on a fancy slide-show either... the only time that is useful is if I have had consumed too much and need something to just look at and veg...

No, but I expect more from the most powerful and best funded software company on the planet. DreamScene is a mess - it doesn't even work on multi-monitor setups FFS! So far the only worthwhile things we've had have been Texas Hold 'Em (which is cool) and Bitlocker (which doesn't work on computers without a TPM chip). So we've had ONE usable "Ultimate" release. Pathetic.

I don't understand why people are so quick to defend a multi-billion dollar company like Microsoft when it has provided no reason to do so.

absolutely agree with you on this, language packs are somethign that i would consider is an integral part of the OS, XP had it hey i think even 98 had it. how this is an extra is beyond me, it should be built in to the OS.

I wouldn't consider Language Packs to be an extra, I would expect them to be a neccesity, unless they are planning to release some special language packs, in which case, I want the following language packs.

1. Yoda
2. Piglatin
3. Astro the Dog
and 4. L33T!

Anyone else?

That's nice but it doesn't help me. You must be the exception as a quick search of Google highlights the problems people have been having with multi-monitor setups. It's pathetic.

Sounds like a bunch of marketing BS to me.
#2.1 +Kushan on 02 Jul 2007 - 18:35
That's odd, because I don't see any real marketing lingo or anything like that there, it looks to me like someone working on those extras decided to update their blog.
There was no hype about anything, none of the usual marketing terms we're used to or anything like that, just a small message saying that the remaining to extras will be available by the end of the summer and that more are planned down the line.

Seems like a fair enough response to me.
#2.2 vetHurmoth on 02 Jul 2007 - 18:57
Sounds more like a copout response to me. They tell us that they're working on DreamScene and the 20 Language Packs and that's it? We've gotten how many Vista Extras since the release?

Ummmm yeahhhh... sounds like Microsoft hasn't really been working on the Extras as hard as what they should have been and people noticed and complained and now they're just spewing marketing BS. But hey, that's just me.

Oh I'm not disagreeing with that at all, I think that Vista ultimate is a joke, I'm just saying I don't think it was marketing BS here, just regular BS =P

"We also intend to deliver additional Extras in the future. In addition to Windows DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs, we plan to ship a collection of additional Windows Ultimate Extras over the next couple years that we are confident will delight our passionate Windows Vista Ultimate customers."

Yeah...right...

Quick question to anyone:

Did anyone notice the "Microsoft Answers Vista Ultimate Extras Critics" in their RSS reader until just now because when I was looking back at Google Reader to see how I could've missed it and it wasn't there in Google Reader. The post's time is 12:24 however in Google Reader which would put it inbetween "Online Customized Ads Move a Step Closer" and "Are Intel Core 2 Chips a Security Threat?" doesn't show up anywhere in it and also that there has only been 57 views to this post that was made 6 hours ago.
#4.1 Flint2 on 02 Jul 2007 - 18:41
And also that no comments were made to the post until just 10-15 minutes ago.
#4.2 creamhackered on 02 Jul 2007 - 18:46
Sorry I wrote it earlier when the story was NDA and forgot to "re-write" it to the current time, hence why it's now pinned. We usually re-write these

I really dont care about the extras, as I will never use them, but all they are working on now is DreamScene and langauge packs? You'd think they'd have more in the pipes then just that...
#5.1 excalpius on 02 Jul 2007 - 19:17
They have a now government sanctioned, but not regulated, monopoly. So, why would they bother?
#6 +BeLGaRaTh on 02 Jul 2007 - 18:52
Language packs are classed as Ultimate Extras? Who gives a fig about them? It certainly wouldn't warrant purchasing ultimate.

WTF?? Language Packs?! Who cares? How can you name that as "Extra"?
Did people buy Vista Ultimate for enjoying and learning their OS in every language?!
#12.1 HawkMan on 02 Jul 2007 - 20:00
no, but noone with proper mental health bought ultimate because of the extras either. in case the name confused you let me clarify, they are EXTRAS, bonuses, extra free stuff, NOT a main feature.

the ability to install multiple language packs for you OS in case of multiple users with different languages, is an extra.
(1 reply) #13 dugbug on 02 Jul 2007 - 20:45
Well said HawkMan....

Noone bought ultimate because of the extras. Will they make more extras? Probably, but it really doesn't matter to most users of ultimate

Language Packs...you mean the thing that Apple includes for free...
(4 replies) #15 ziadoz on 02 Jul 2007 - 21:46
Why are people still whining? The majority of the current Windows XP user base won't move to Vista for a few years anyway. Why would they spend development time on extras so soon? Also, who bought Ultimate purely for the extras?

Let them take their time and get some good stuff out, but for gods sake stop moaning. People are only moaning because its Microsoft anyway. If it were Apple the 20 Language packs would be 'innovative'.
#15.1 HalfLing on 02 Jul 2007 - 22:39
Apple already includes Language Packs with OSX and they don't charge and extra $270 for them either.
#15.2 ziadoz on 03 Jul 2007 - 11:02
No, Apple charge $100+ each year for a few minor upgrades. I highly doubt these language packs are major languages, I'd bet they are lesser spoken ones anyway.

The current language packs consist of Chinese, Spanish, French and German (to name but a few) - Chinese is spoken more than English! It is ridiculous that Microsoft made language packs an "Ultimate Extra" and speaks volumes about how they like to fleece people.

Also Italian, Chinese (both HK and Simplified), Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Or perhaps you will continue to be a dick and ignore those to prove your point.
#16 mlerner on 02 Jul 2007 - 21:50
Good thing I didn't pay for Ultimate, although I actually use most of the standard features the come with the operating system. The extras are just bonus.
(1 reply) #17 Izlude on 02 Jul 2007 - 22:50
Hahaha language packs. That's so people who own lower forms of Vista are forced to get Ultimate so they'll get their translations at last. AT LAST!

Oh don't forget, Hold'em Poker doesn't play online, but it's still a great way to pass the time at the office... wait wait? I found a glitch! The game ends when you press Alt F4!!!!
#17.1 Julius Caro on 02 Jul 2007 - 23:30
What Ultimate has is MUI support, which is different to having to buy Ultimate to get their translations. If they want they translations they can just buy vista in their languages!
#18 Typhon on 02 Jul 2007 - 22:59
Sounds good to me. I will not use Vista till another year or more or sooner I do not know.
#19 QuarterSwede on 02 Jul 2007 - 23:46
I think the main problem here is that Microsoft said that they were going to deliver the extras soon. At least most people took it that it wouldn't be some 6 months+ down the road. What is going on with Microsoft these days? My guess is that they are either spreading their employees to thin, there are too many chiefs and not enough indians or they can't manage worth crap. It may take a while to code DreamScene and MUI (language packs) but it doesn't take 6 months.

#22.1 dl0711 on 03 Jul 2007 - 04:02
Please do yourself a Favor and wait till end of summer and see if they kept their word before buying.

They said that we will get extras before and all we got was 3 useless extras and one of them is still in preview/beta. So that right there shows that they will not keep their word. Also how long did it take them to reply to this matter?? A long time so that proves that you should just wait. Also if you look on their site they removed the teams Bios because there is NO Ultimate Extra team anymore.

They only said what they said because they dont want us the users and they media that have been covering this issue to change sales because of not having the extras. this is just a PR stunt because Ultimate sales was down ever since this issue came up.

How are they not getting what they paid for? They paid for an operating system and they got an operating system. They paid for the chance to download Extras knowing full well the history of Microsoft and their timelines. They took the chance, they got burned in terms of time. Microsoft is not saying "we are not giving you extras, haha, we screwed you, now try and sue us". They are saying it is taking longer than normal. As long as the extras are eventually provided, Microsoft has made good on their promise.

That being said, now that MS has commented, shut your mouths. If you really have nothing better to do in life than whine and bitch about extras in an operating system, then you should consider medical help.

Actually, it seems kind of rare for a company to apologize to me these days, so I kind of appreciate that they made the gesture. It's a little thing that makes a big difference to me.
