Great news for all you Xbox 360 owners. Microsoft has decided to extend the general hardware failure coverage for all X360 consoles to 3 years:

"As of today, all Xbox 360 consoles are covered by an enhanced warranty program to address specifically the general hardware failures indicated by the three flashing red lights on the console. This applies to new and previously-sold consoles. While we will still have a general one year console warranty (two years in some countries), we are announcing today a three-year warranty that covers any console that displays a three flashing red lights error message. If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date.

We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. In doing so, Microsoft stands behind its products and takes responsibility to ensure that every Xbox 360 console owner continues to have a fantastic gaming experience."

What about people who have already paid for replacements?
#1.1 vetlardiop on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:02
All the official press release or warranty update site says is:

"For any customer who has previously paid for repair expenses related to the three flashing lights error message on the Xbox 360 console, Microsoft will retroactively reimburse them."

umm did you read this at all

"We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. "

Holy crap, good news
#3 Lingwo on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:03
Well it is annoying the consoles break but i'm glad Microsoft trying to fix it and extending the warranty. I now feel a bit happier using my 360 now i know that if it breaks i won't have to pay for repairs.

awesome

very good news, but i still think It's Microsoft admitting Xbox 360 has some 'flaws'.

haha, u should have heard Peter Moore on Major Nelson's podcast today, he literally said we have actually found the problems and that's why we have done it.

It's clear that MS knows what the specific problems are, and I think this is why they haven't moved to the newer 65nm chips yet. They've probably reworked things and are going to make the changes needed for all future consoles being made.

Also, making it three years, I think they pretty much know that that's enough time needed to cover all the systems sold in 2005-2007. I expect newer models made probably later this year (or maybe they're doing it already) will have the fixes in place and won't give any problems.

This is great news to everyone though, and now people can buy it without having to worry about repair costs and so on. I know it's been holding many people back.
#6 +Zhivago on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:07
This is one of the best example of great PR (given that you have a good product).

Those people that bought extended warranty must be ****ed!
#7.1 SkyyPunk on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:16
ooo good point, wonder how that will be handled
#7.2 HawkMan on 05 Jul 2007 - 23:02
this is just for this specific error though.

doesn't matter for me though, in this country I could claim the console repaired within 5 years if it breaks and it's not because of me abusing it.

You're right, this 3 year deal is only for 3 red ring error problems. If somehow you have a different problem, then you fall under the other 2 deals. The normal 1 year and the extended 2 year deal.
#7.4 Ruciz on 06 Jul 2007 - 10:52
still, how many other problems does the 360 have besides the 3 red lights of death? Hell, if you get another problem turn the box on and wrap it in a towel until you get 3 red lights....

Either way, still a curse to ship it back to them and wait out the repair time. The consoles should work right from square one, not square 2 years after they started production.. Least they are agreeing their console design is the worst in history (kinda like all their 2007 products *cough* vista *cough*) I am not a hardcore gamer, and I have went through 3 units...

the return time is going to be horrendous in the upcoming weeks. I know of quite a few people sitting on 360's that are 3RL, just itchin for a free fixing.

They are not admitting anything of the sort, stop being childish. Sure the 360 had some issues, but at least Microsoft are doing something about it. A single heatsink design flaw (or whatever the issue is) doesn't make it the worst console design in history. PS2 had alot more specific issues than that!

Also what are your problems with Vista? I've been running it for over a year with no operating system problems what so ever. Do you even own Vista? Or are you one of those anti-MS zealots who knows nothing about Vista because they have never used it and are just jumping on the bandwagon? The vast majority of Vista issues are driver related, and the situation is much improved now. And don't try and tell me that it uses all of your memory and is a memory hog because I will just laugh at your ignorance.

Wow am I glad I didnt open mine up now!
#9 El-Diablo on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:27
This is a big big move for microsoft if you ask me. I'm glad to see them doing this.
#10 kebirek on 05 Jul 2007 - 22:28
The problem with the 360 is how the weight of the heatsinks is distributed. They are being held by X-shaped clamps, making the entire weight push upwards at the mobo. This pressure bends it, breaking the connections of the cpu and/or the gpu to the mobo creating the 3RLOD. This is a serious design flaw. It can be solved by taking away the clamps. Just google "X-Clamp replacement" and you´ll see what I´m talking about.

Surprised to see them do this, good move MS

#14 zerolimit on 05 Jul 2007 - 23:23
wow this is great! only thing is that its from the date of purchase! so if you bought it at launch make sure nothing is wrong with it!
#15 RuudJacobs.NET on 05 Jul 2007 - 23:28
that's one good move by microsoft, I take my (black)hat off
Anyways, I'm getting a Wii
#16 RDX on 05 Jul 2007 - 23:52
If only other companies would do the same when something goes wrong with their products. You see that Steve?
(2 replies) #17 RaisinCain on 06 Jul 2007 - 01:53
Make sure you save that receipt.
#17.1 MightyJordan on 06 Jul 2007 - 10:34
No need for a receipt. If you get the Ring of Death, you simply ring up Microsoft, tell them what's happened, and they'll collect it. You should get it back in less than a week. I had one of the launch consoles, it got the Ring of Death after 2 weeks, but Microsoft picked it up, repaired it, and got it back to us in 5 days, just in time for Christmas!
#17.2 Shadrack on 07 Jul 2007 - 00:24
There is also the "mfg date" on the back of the console. If you do not have an original sales receipt then it will go by that date.

I know how to read it's just I didn't read the FAQ bit before I posted, which clearly states this applies to all countries opps!

now giving extended its a good temporal solution, but they have to do something to prevent this in a future.
#20.1 Danrarbc on 06 Jul 2007 - 08:09
They have if you listen to the podcast. It's also why they're doing the warranty - since they have a decent amount of confidence any system they fix now probably won't come back in again.

You're right, I think MS was quiet for so long because they were trying to find and fix all the problems. This is also why I think they haven't moved over to the smaller 65nm chips yet like they were suppose to already.

This 3 year deal will hurt them at first, but in the long run, if they fix the problems, it'll only help to boost sales, if newer and fixed units don't break anymore starting now (or from whatever point they put the changes into effect), then that initial $1billion cost they talk about will vanish in in time. Now that people know they have a 3 year warranty they won't wait on buying the system.
#21 xSuRgEx on 06 Jul 2007 - 12:28
time to search ebay for xbox360s that have that ROD fault.
#22 jstillion on 06 Jul 2007 - 13:28
Not bad, they found the design flaw, admitted it publicly instead of trying to downplay it, and are doing something about it. I still not interested in an xbox360 (due to lack of the style of games that I prefer) but nice to see there putting there money where there mouth is.
#23 305 on 06 Jul 2007 - 13:48
wow, another waranty extension. nice of them to admit they have a crappy console build. Thanks for the simpathy.
(2 replies) #24 Samboini on 06 Jul 2007 - 13:55
You can't fault them for honouring this, even if it is a known problem.
#24.1 GP007 on 06 Jul 2007 - 14:58
You can't, and at least they're doing something about it now. Other systems have had known problems from the start but never got this type of support.

I think this just goes to show that Microsoft are truly serious about the gaming business and are here to stay. They care about keeping their customers happy and I am very glad to see this from them.

This is the right thing to do and I applaud them for it.

It's a shame Apple and Sony don't stand behing their products. I'm referring to all the iPods with battery problems and all the dead PS2s out there...

i couldn't agree more

anyways, my xbox 360 took a crap after 13 months of constant use (not ring of death) but xbox support said it would take longer to fix my xbox360 so instead of making me wait they sent me a brand new 360! now it doesnt get as hot as my old one did and even doesnt make noise when read a CD! now thats great tech support!
