- Yeah,
They BETTER rush this crap out ASAP. Vista needs all the help it can get, right out of the box. Removed it from the 2 boxes I had it installed on 2 days afterwards! What a POS!! Just my opinion on this!!

- Isn't rushing what made Vista so garbage anyways?

- wish they'd hurry it up then, it's now Thursday, still no beta, and if it's a closed beta then blahh!! @ ms.

- I got that email on the 17th. Although it might not make a difference, they did send a correction notice too. I got that email the next day. The first one said it was for Vista SP1 and the correction notice said it's for Server 2008.Quote -Apologies All, We made a typo in the last notification that went that referenced the wrong OS. We didn't mean to imply or cause any confusion on the availability of the Service Pack for Vista. The WDK build available now on connect is the latest for Windows Server 2008.
Thanks,
The WDK Beta team -

- However it doesnt matter which one they called it. Service pack 1 for vista is the same as Server 2008 SP0/RTM. In the same way XP x64 RTM was Server 2008 SP1. In fact if you want to play with the codebase of vista sp1 i would recomend you install server 08.

I have the June CTP of S2008 installed in a VMware Workstation virtual machine. Its UI – and usability – is just like Vista's, but without a lot of the hassles. Seems pretty solid so far. I too would strongly recommend it over Vista – even if you just use it as a desktop OS.

- Why the rush with SP1?.... may be because many people said that will buy Vista before the launch of the first service pack.

Why the rush??? because vista is nothing but incompatibility. That's why the rush... people are getting ****ed off, I get calls from people wanting to buy laptops but they DO NOT want Vista on their PCs... they rather pay the extra $$$ and load XP on it. -

This surprises me! I didn't know the average person knows what Vista is! My neighbour thought he got XP with a skin with his new PC -

- I've never had any serious problems with Vista x64 or x86 that couldn't be traced to driver issues!
Granted it is buggy, but does anyone else remember how buggy Windows XP, 2k and 98 Gold were before their service packs and good drivers?!
People don't want it because its different -well so was Win95 and much more seriously! -
#7.2 Posted by whocares78 on 20 Jul 2007 - 02:04
- 98 never had any service packs(not sure what 98 Gold is), there was the SE version, released but never any SP's and as far as i am concerned it is still buggy and crap, do agree xp was pretty buggy but i never had issues with 2000

- my biggest issues with Vista are the interface and design decisions that went into it.
Microsoft wanted something new. a fresh approach to doing stuff.
the end result was something that is definitely different, and in many, many ways a *worse* way to do things.
many options don't have alternative methods of doing things - they simply don't exist in Vista.
i doubt the Service Pack will change things back to how they use to be done.
with a Vista-compatible system w/ 2 Gigs of ram or more, things should run fine. no issues with stability or anything.
the only "non interface" Vista correction i can think of off the top of my head for the server pack is that whole "Slow file transfer" issue. hard drives that are capable of 30-100 megabytes a second transfer should not be transferring files at under 1 meg a second to each other. -
#10.1 Posted by Hidr0 on 19 Jul 2007 - 15:27
- Agree with you Xenomorph: they MUST fix the slow file transfer issue... this is the only downside i found in Vista... so far!

- They already have - there is hotfix - works perfectly for me http://robgarrett.com/cs/blogs/software/ar...e-copy-fix.aspx

- The hot fix does have some issues. The first thing you might want to check is whether or not write caching is enabled and advanced performance tabs are enabled. Most SATA installs of Vista that I have come across (may not be norm) seem to have these both disabled. You can benefit greatly by optimizing the hard disk.
The user interface is something I like. I have been using Windows since 95 (and it was time for a change). The UI is nicely laid out and most options "should be easily available." I will admit that it can be a little limiting at times. They do, however, offer a nice command line (power-shell). It works well under XP and Windows 2003, but has some enhanced features under Vista (as well as the coming Win2k8 server line).

- Your file transfer thing sounds like you are running a bad driver my friend. File transfers on IDE on the same LUN will be a hair slower but i don't know your setup from your post. If you have SATA drives and you run them in lagacy PATA mode that can slow things down in translation, but shouldn't be that much. You might want to run a S.M.A.R.T. test also. You might have a drive thats about to fail and your bios might not be reporting the message at startup. I have seen that drop speeds way low. Might also want to check event viewer to see if Windows has predicted a HD failure as well if you don't reboot your PCs like some of us.

- I must be one of the lucky ones
I have been using Vista before it went Final. I have tried and used both x86 and 64bit versions and haven't had any issues regarding stability, reliability or usability that has bothered me any more than with XP. -
#13.1 Posted by bluarash on 20 Jul 2007 - 01:02
- I haven't really had very many issues either. The two biggest problems I seem to have is a conflict with my APC Power Chute software and the lack of drivers for either of my flatbed scanners. I think DVD playback could be much improved, though you can buy a third party codec, and the performance of Nvidia (and ATI to a lesser extent) need to be enhanced. These, however, are not issues that are that uncommon with any new OS release.

I'm on Vista Ultimate x64 with no Power Chute problems. You may want to check APC's website out again. -

- I know it is likely something in my configuration. I have not been able to trace it. I was most successful by uninstalling the APC software. The error was related to my CPU going to 100% when coming out of standby or being booted again after hibernation. I even tried using apcupsd but had the same problem. I will, however, take a look again.

- Vista continues to be developed through Server 2008. Any problems that show up with Vista can be delt with during the development of Server 2008. Each new release of Server 2008 also contains an update to Vista SP1. Server 2008 is on target for a Nov. 2007 RTM along with Vista SP1.
Everyone here knows that the code base for Vista and Server 2008 are the same right?

Others speculate Microsoft might release the SP1 beta Thursday, the day it will report the company's fiscal 2007 fourth quarter and year-end financial results. In an interview Wednesday, one source close to the company said he had been told by insiders that a beta of SP1 would be out by now, so an imminent release is highly likely. And another source said that beta testers report SP1 will definitely be out this week with a final release coming in November or December.
