If all goes well, the next time your phone dies at a friend’s house you’ll no longer be left cursing the gods regarding the lack of standards for USB phone cables.

Last week, at the Open Mobile Terminal Platform, mobile phone manufacturing leaders such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG discussed the future of phone charging and data exchange. The companies agreed to adopt a new USB standard called Micro-USB, hopefully putting an end to the mess of incompatible proprietary power connectors that has plagued the cell phone industry for years. The move will likely be first implemented in next year's cell phone designs. The Micro-USB standard was develop early this year and introduced by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the group responsible for new USB standards.

Until a new standard is adopted, consumers will finally be able to use their old charger when they purchase a new phone. Companies will no longer have to pay for part of the user disposal and recycling fees for chargers as certain environmental laws worldwide have forced them to do in the past. Another financial benefit for the cell phone companies is that they won't have to include a charger with phones they sell, possibly cutting a major cost. This will in turn allow for smaller, lighter phone boxes, which will cost less to ship and store. Overall, both companies and consumers should end up spending less money once the new standard is implemented.

I don't care how universal it is, I want a damn charger with my phone. It's bad enough mp3 players don't come with ac adapters anymore, I'd hate to have to buy one for my phone too or use one that may be on the old side.

Really? Let me list all the top mp3 player lines that don't include a power cord:
iPod
Zune
Zen Vision
Sansa
Archos
All Samsung's

Yeah, it's just the iPod, right? And I know it's only speculation, but considering the way these companies work, they'll charge the same as they're charging now and simply leave out the cable. If that were to happen, I'd be less than pleased.

I think all of those companies led by Apple's example. Shame, really, I'd hate to see them do the same with the iPhone

So Mini-USB isn't enough anymore?
#4.1 MioTheGreat on 23 Sep 2007 - 00:33
That plug might not be thin enough for some phones over the next few years.

so... Now they wont have chargers.. am i the only that finds this completely imbecilic,

I couldn't care less what it plugs into as long as it comes with something, and that something doesn't take more than a night to charge my phone.

Charging things off a USB port is stupid. You're limited to a mere 5 V at 500 mA off a root-USB port (a little more if you have an external powered USB hub). The typical North American AC outlet (NEMA 5-15R) can provide up to 125 V at 15 A. So, I'd much rather be using a battery charger off an AC outlet than off a USB port. Do the math, people.

Yes, but how fast an a Lithium Ion battery take a charge without blowing up? You've got to be very careful in charging them.

croq i believe they're gana be like current chargers. ac plugs into the wall but has a usb connector at the end

my charger uses mini-b for it's connection

guys this is a good thing. you end up paying for the charger anyways, but now you only have to pay for one charger untill the next universal standard comes out

i think this is a good thing too. Doesn't the new RAZR use micro-usb? I remember seeing something about some phone on CNET using "yet another plug" but it was micro-usb at least. My headset uses mini-usb. This would definitely come in handy but what about all those chargers with different voltages? You go to your friends house and plug in to charge up, PUFF goes some nice blue cloud

razr v8 v9
nokia 5610 5310 8600

You are confusing micro-usb with mini-usb. RAZR's use 5-pin mini-usb. I believe some cameras use micro-usb.

I see Apple isn't one of the listed companies.

No doubt they won't conform to the standard.
