The Center for Environmental Health on Monday said that it is suing Apple based on the report by environmental group Greenpeace. The report, released earlier Monday, found hazardous materials Apple's iPhone. The Greenpeace tests revealed chemicals that included "phthalates" in the vinyl plastic earphone wiring at levels that are prohibited in young children's toys in San Francisco and the European Union (EU).

Under California's Proposition 65 law, products that can expose consumers to phthaltes or other chemicals that are reproductive toxins or carcinogens must carry a warning label, according to the Center for Environmental Health. "There is no reason to have these potentially hazardous chemicals in iPhones" said Michael Green, Executive Director of Center for Environmental Health. "We expect Apple to reformulate their products to make them safer from cradle to grave, so they don't pose a threat to consumers, workers or the environment."

"phthalates"

Great, yet another toxic (and unpronounceable) chemical to keep track of!

""phthalates" in the vinyl plastic earphone wiring" It's the earphone wires that are the problem in this case not the iPhone.

Probably more like a stupid class action lawsuit or something so everyone can get rich without working for it!

The iPhone isnt a kids toy, if anyone lets their kid eat their iphone or eats it themselves then they deserve everything they get.

This Politically Correct and Safety Concious world is getting ridiculous.

You obviously know nothing about the nature of children and pet animals.

Greenpeace always making a marketing bluff and achieving nothing. Greenpeace stink!.

Anyways, the restriction is applied to children toys and afaik iphone is not a child stuff.

Darn, now I won't be able to give my kids the iPhone headphones for Christmas.

The green facists ruin yet another wonderful holiday.

Phthalates is a great low-impact exercise program.

So no hazardous chemicals in the phone, but a certain amount of feces is allowed in foods? Blah. I wish the FDA was as strict.

As for Apple, this isn't the first time they've gotten some heat for hazardous chemicals. I guess this "Apple" isn't very green.
#10 whocares78 on 17 Oct 2007 - 08:03
can anythign else go wrong with this POS phone
#11 Albert on 18 Oct 2007 - 02:45
geez.

of all the contaminants, apple got the mother load - phthalates .... this is really bad, if you know how it can harm you and your children.

expect the EU to follow up on this and banned / fined apple on this. they have more stringent requirement on phthlates than us does.
