LG Super Blu combines Blu-Ray and HD-DVD

LG recently released its dual Blu-Ray / HD-DVD player (the BH200) better known as "Super Blu". Today at CES, we got a close look at it in action and we were impressed.

Priced at $999, it isn't cheap but for users who want to have both formats in a single device, here it is (of course, at $999 one could start pricing how much it would cost to simply buy both on their own).

I'm just going by what the LG rep told me.

Dual players are a waste of time as at the end of the day consumers will still need to decide whether to get a Blu Ray or HD DVD disk, and when one of those formats do win, those with dual players will be left with a mixture of different formatted disks and proprietary multiformat players will no longer be sold.

Isn't the idea that customers don't have to decide which format of disc to buy? I mean is there really that much difference, for the average Joe, between HD-DVD and blu-ray?
I think Mr. Shmoe here would just pick out what he finds first at the store...

What's the difference between this and the other dual format player that came out awhile ago? Wasn't there something involving HD DVD menu problems or some features lacking?

The BH200 supports all the necessary HD-DVD java functions and can, thus, show the HD-DVD logo on the product. The BH-100 lacked this support and could not fly the official logo.

Blu-Ray uses Java, HD DVD uses HDi.

$999? Hmm...

Xbox 360 $279 + HD-DVD addon $179= $460
PS3 + $400

$860 for an HD-DVD plus Blu-Ray player, which happens to include media centers, gaming abilities, DVD upscaling, internet connectivity and browsing and much more. I will take the two gaming machines, thank you very much.

No, they are not as sleek or as quiet, but it's a much better bargain.

I agree completely, however, isn't that what everyone wants? The latest greatest sleekest one can get?

If I had an extra grand to spend, I still wouldn't buy one.

Edit: Removing unnecessary quote

My thoughts exactly. That's what I'd buy, not this.

One step cheaper would be to take the $199 Venturier HD-DVD player and the $399 PS3 and you're all set for both format and you get a game console as a bonus. Add to that a Sony PSP at $199 and you will soon get a portable movie player (with the Blu-Ray thing on the PS3) and again, a nice gaming console.

$199 + $399 + $199 = $800

Remove the PSP if you don't need it and still, you're only at $600.

SO... LG is far far from the current price and I would not buy their player.

Well, I would then go with the Xbox 360 + HD-DVD addon for $460 and the Samsung BD-P1400 Blu-ray Player for $295 so I at least would have the better gaming system

Not as good of a deal as yours, but saves you about $100 from my first quote.

Yep totally agree, who's going to buy a dual player at that price, even more so now that the end is within sight.

Yeah, it's a bit odd with a release like this, but it was designed when the war had still not seen the recent news.
Still, it can be useful to those who own HD-DVD's and want to move to Blu-ray. But I would still not recommend this one at this price, and then just two drives instead. Hopefully the user would have room for another drive in the computer.

Cost aside.... what this does mean is that BR/HD combi-drives are possible, and now inevitable. As with all these things, expect to see the prices tumble as more manufacturers do the same thing. In 2 years time everyone will have one, because you'll be able to pick them up for £25.

It wasn't so long ago when we couldn't decide on +RW or -RW, then drives appeared that could play and record both, so it became a non-issue. Same thing is happening here.

It's actually not new that we have BD+HD-DVD combo drives, there's been those before. I think this one has some more features, but the technology itself has been here for at least a few months.

A bit pointless now since HD-DVD is almost on its way out?

Um, no it's not.

Holy hell, that's expensive! I think I'd rather recommend a $199 Blu-ray player at this point, but sure, running dual format can be useful especially for users who already own HD-DVD discs but want to migrate to Blu-ray.

But damn, it's even far cheaper to buy two separate drives. Sure, you save some space with this solution, and one 5 1/4" drive bay, but that's it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have very special needs, like all drive bays occupied or something.
