The latest version of web browser Firefox will make changes to the way people search for information online, says its developer.

Mozilla has told the BBC's World Service that the new browser has been designed around the importance of search to users. Firefox 3, currently going through its third stage of beta testing, will offer a combined search and bookmark tool via the url bar.

It will also allow offline working.

Chairman of the Mozilla Foundation Mitchell Baker told BBC World Service's Digital Planet programme: "It's clear that when people are looking for information on the web, search is the number one activity," she said. "We've devised ways to bring that power into areas that are closer to your individual life."

As long as search is based on Google, I am fine with it.

This shiny new search will be google branded so they can fill up their pockets even more with millions of dollars...
#3.1 Lare2 on 27 Feb 2008 - 20:24
And if it was a Yahoo or Microsoft branded one the story would be the same. So what's the difference

Opera has search via the URL bar already a long time and searching in history via the url bar is already in the newest beta.. so what's gonna be new about it. The fact that more people use FF than Opera so everyone goes the same way to search? eg 'g browser' or whatever?

OMG Operas s0fwar3s DID ITZ FIRST LOLLLERZ!! FIREFOX ES F0R TEH N00BZ!!!!!!11

1. All browsers have had some sort of type-matching in the URL bar for a long time, but that's not what this is.

2. And, it's been enabled in the past 2 Firefox3 betas... (and Places landed in the trunk about a year ago)
So it sounds like Opera is at least a beta behind.

AHAHAH...

1. 1st check your sources... All browsers have some sort of type-matching in the URL bar, BUT opera was first. I'm not saying it's better or worse, but give them credit.

2. He said it was in the latest beta, he didn't mention the others. In fact you may like to see this:

how about that?? 4th september 2007. Again, give credit to who deserve it.

Firefox is a great browser, but opera is lots more innovative, always full of great new ideas, and the proof is that others copy them, like this one, like the start with last session, like the closed tabs trash bin, etc...

This is exactly what I meant yes, thanks for clearing it up. (I was merely asking a question, not flaming/trolling in any way).

lol @ first 3 comments.

They're talking about the "Awesomebar".

No, it's not powered by Google, (lulz) it's powered by mysql and it's own algorithm.
#5.1 carlskov on 27 Feb 2008 - 09:49
Actually not MySQL but SQLite :-)

my bad.
#6 danj205 on 27 Feb 2008 - 09:48
Yeah, the Awesomebar searches everything. To be honest, Internet Explorer has always let you search your bookmarks, while Firefox never let you. The Awesomebar lets you search via URL, title or your own assigned tags. To be honest, it's been such an awesome feature, I use it all the time!

The new URL bar is GREAT!!!
It's something that I've started taking for granted because it's so easy to press "Ctrl + L" then type a word that has something to do with what I'm looking for.

It finds what I want really quickly and almost always without having to refine my search.

IMO, it's pretty garbage since it takes up way too much room. Other than that, I don't really see how it's any different than 2.x

Oh well.

Agreed, although I must say that I find the visual layout of the URL bar very ugly. I enjoy the functionality together with the old layout of FF2, through the oldbar-extension found at https://addons.mozilla.org/da/firefox/addon/6227

Who'd have thought it eh? When people are looking for information, the first thing they do is search for it. He later went on to reveal that people tend to sleep more when they are tired. Oh yes, you heard it here first.

"We've devised ways to bring that power into areas that are closer to your individual life."

I spy, with my cynical eye, something beginning with BS. Closer to my individual life? Who dreams these things up? I want to go and work there too!

How stable is beta 3 if I want to test it out?
#10.1 SniperX on 27 Feb 2008 - 14:20
As stable as it is even if you didn't want to test it out.
#11 +Kushan on 27 Feb 2008 - 15:50
I LOVE the new URL bar, it's so good I want to install FF3 on all my machines, but incompatible extensions are holding me back. Can't wait until the authors catch up, because the awesomebar is the best thing since tabs.

As long as it can be turned off. I hate typing something into the address bar and having a big list drop down.
#12.1 Lare2 on 27 Feb 2008 - 20:27
I also hate that, so here's hoping they put a way to disable it

Sounds a lot like what Inquisitor does (albeit in the Search Bar and without Bookmarks). Never liked it even though it looked purdy. I think it was because it never gave me enough info about the pages.

"It will also allow offline working."

What a breakthrough feature. Never heard of "Work offline" before....
