With the GeForce 9-series NVIDIA has created quite a lot of confusion. Instead of a major update it seems that most GeForce 9 cards are merely updated versions of GeForce 8 cards, and unfortunately named so you cannot figure out which card is based on which.

The GeForce 9800GTX is a perfect example. While the name implies that it is an upgrade for the GeForce 8800GTX, which it in a way is, it also is just a higher clocked GeForce 8800GTS 512 MB. You might wonder why NVIDIA didn’t just use GeForce 9 for all their G92 based cards but we may never know why.

If you read our review of the Sparkle 8800GTS 512 MB you know that we really liked the card. So it sounds logical that the Sparkle 9800GTX should be just as good, doesn’t it? Well, that is what we want to find out in today’s review as we test it in a variety of benchmarks.

Although this is primarily a Windows site; this card works wonderfully on *NIX (Solaris/Linux/*BSD etc). Although it might not sound 'important today' - imagine in a years time when you might wish to move to *NIX, only to find that due to your sort sighted purchase, you're unable to. Its a great product for those who want to future proof their investment.

Hey kaiwai ,
That's a cool thing to know, as I generally use Linux anyway already!

Thanks

He he he, I've got a Quadro 570FX (Mobile Edition) - its wonderful, in my desktop, an Nvidia 8400GTS. Nvidia will keep getting my business as long as they keep supporting *NIX

little comment about sparkle

I don't know about their 9xxx line, but the Geforce8 line of cards from them was a total waste, I've sold quite a few 8800GTX from them, I've had a return rate of nearly 45% on these, a complete disaster, when it wasn't the ram dying, it was the capacitors, and of course all of them died just before the end of the warranty period, or little after

Never ever again will I have them listed in my catalog

I have 8800GT from them and so far it has been okay... with the exception of some games, like Silkroad Online (which is already a piece of ****).

Yea, that happens to me to sometimes, by coincidence. And then I get a brand spanking new replacement, by coincidence.

Grow a brain. =p

fact is when you sell quite a load of these because they're cheap and that's what ppl want, and a majority of them exhibits the same behavior after roughly the sale length of use, sorry that's no coincidence. and as far as returns are concerned, most of the customers who had their cards RMAed either directly with sparkle of thru me have had to wait something like 3 to 4 months to get a WORKING replacement (some have had non working GTX refurbs sent back to them....), which often ended up being an inferior model (8800GTS 512) talk about service and build quality....

The results of that review point that Nvidia is just taking advantage of customers with this new card. There is no reason to pay for that if one can buy 8800GTX 512 MB for less.

I'm still waiting for next-gen to arrive from nvidia and ati though...
