Looks like we'll have to get up bright and early to buy the new iPhone. Also, AT&T says a "no-commitment" iPhone is "coming soon."

First things first: The new iPhone 3G will go on sale at 8 a.m. next Friday at AT&T retail stores and Apple stores. So if you're planning on lining up, you'd better be ready well before sunrise.

Also, AT&T has finally clarified pricing for current AT&T subscribers who want the iPhone 3G.

In a nutshell, if you're "upgrade eligible" (log into your AT&T account to see if you are), you'll be able to buy the new iPhone for the discounted price of $199 for the 8GB version or $299 for the 16GB model. (AT&T is somewhat vague about the eligibility criteria, although your credit history and the time remaining on your contract are factors.) You'll also have to pay an $18 "upgrade fee."

If you're not eligible for the discount, you'll have to fork over extra for an "early upgrade"-$399 for the 8GB iPhone 3G or $499 for the 16GB model. Ouch.

AT&T also says that a "no-commitment" (read: no contract) iPhone 3G will be available soon, at $599 for the 8GB version and or $699 for the 16GB handset. Pricey, but hey-no two-year contract.

Not that I am ever going to get one, but can you just imagine how those prices will translate to the UK market for the "no committment" version

It should be £250 for the 16 GB version, but any bets it will be closer to £400 ?

Absolutely crazy, no way worth it

If you mean for the none contract version(s) ($699 -> £350.75) + 17.5% VAT = ~£412 so I'd expect it to be even more than that.

Glad I sold mine after the novelty of having a touch screen phone wore off and realised I could have bought a much better phone for cheaper than the iPhone.

Your expectations would be wrong then... O2 already published the none contract price: £299

I that mean that iPhone 3G will be unlocked for other networks?
#3.1 Fritzly on 02 Jul 2008 - 14:44
I read somewhere, sorry I cannot find the exact link right now, that the phone will still be locked by AT&T; what are these people thinking/smoking is beyond me...

i dont get how iphone manages to get all this attention, when clearly offers nothing compared to Nokia and other mobile phone manufacturers. It's like Nokia suddenly decides to build a car and people than buy it, when other manufacturers produce them for more than 100 years

I don't entirely agree with that. The simple fact of the matter is that Apple came out of nowhere with a superb offering into the already very competitive cell phone market and has really shaken it up. The attention is absolutely deserved. Look at all the very recent touch display offerings from long established vendors who STILL can't make a display as good / fluid / functional as Apple did on their first attempt?!

The Motorola ROKR partnership with Apple received very little fuss because the product stank. The iPhone (despite your needless cynicism) is an excellent product and has sold exceptionally well - of course there is going to be huge interest about the updated version, which packs in more features and hacks the price.

i'm saiyng about lacks of feautes IPhone has, like not being able to send MMS, not being able to use camera as video recorder, etc, when other manufacturers had those features in their mobiles for years

It is not true, the success of Apple is not the "number of unit sold" but how much Apple (and At&t) bribes for each unit.

Also some statistics show that Iphone has sold well and reached the top ten of sales but the small footprint say "only in a single country, only for a few months and only in comparison with other smartphones (not regular phones)", so yes the success if iphone is true also tricky.

But what about the things that Apple have done WELL with this product? Apple have made a mobile browser which everyone is raving about. Companies have been trying to do this for long enough (how long as Mobile IE been around?) - yet with their first release of the product they've put in a killer browser.

Apple typically doesn't include features if they don't think they're worthwhile. MMS I think is a waste of time, especially if with the iPhone you have unlimited data as you can just email a high quality version of the picture to someone rather than send them a mobile phone display resized version. Seriously - i've sent and recieved no more than 20 MMS messages in all the years i've owned mobile phones and I suspect i'm not alone. Video recording would be a good feature and is something I have used in the past - and something i'm sure Apple will address at some point.

re: MMS is a waste of time.

Guess you don't date young women then?

I do, and their email doesn't come to their phone, but an MMS does. So I send the picture they want to their phone AND then do a follow-up to their email if the reaction is a winner. And they reciprocate in kind.

So yeah, no MMS on the iPhone is a small but definite c**kblocker.

My ladies (currently) range from 20 to 36 and they all use SMS and MMS a LOT.

Ah screw that and buy an OpenMoko Freerunner
#5.1 garyt on 02 Jul 2008 - 11:52
It'd be nice if they actually advertised the damn thing though. If it weren't for the tech/Linux sites I'd never have known the OpenMoko existed.
#5.2 PureLegend on 02 Jul 2008 - 12:51
Does anyone really care about OpenMoko other than people who know what Linux is?
#5.3 excalpius on 02 Jul 2008 - 16:26
No, of course not. It's just the most extreme example of the shareware OS fanboism. I'm sure there are eight remaining fans of Qnix as well out there who dream of a Qnix phone.

"I'll call you back. I'm out of time on my phone."
*2 minutes pass*
"I'll call you back. I'm out of time on my phone."
Repeat...

Hello, i'm from Brazil. I"ll be at N.Y, from July 7, till July 20. What they mean about "iPhone 3G will be available soon" ??

I mean, i can't buy an "no-commitment" iPhone at the first days of sell (July,11) at AT&T or Apple stores ??

How long we should wait for that ? anyone have an idea ?

If I walked into an ATT store and they said $600 for the iphone I would laugh in their face and walk out.
#11 jzoom6 on 04 Jul 2008 - 13:51
I'm sure I will get some laughs for this, but I still regularly use and enjoy my Razr. It sends/receives phone calls, sends/receives text and MMS as well, and has both a camera and a video recorder. I'm happy with it and have no complaints, so I guess I'm siding with the fellas that think $300 and up for a CELL phone is a little ridiculous.
