In order to speed up adoption of quad-core CPUs, Intel is planning to offer its upcoming 3.2GHz Extreme series Bloomfield processor at US$999 in thousand-unit tray quantities, US$500 cheaper compared to the current top-end Core 2 Extreme QX9770 which sells at US$1,499, according to sources at motherboard makers.

In the past, Intel had always priced its flagship Extreme model at US$999, but recent product launches saw the company abandon its traditional pricing scale, and introduce even steeper prices.

Since there isn't a snowball's chance in hell I'll pay a $1000 for "a" CPU, this doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. What I am interested in is the pricing for the mainstream chips (2.66GHz to 2.93GHz). If they're at or below the current Penryn chips, then I may be convinced to hold off my system build just a little bit longer. Although, since it seems the mainstream parts won't be out in good numbers until like this time next year, I may as well just go ahead and build my new system (still deciding between a Q9300 and a Q9450), then wait for the 32nm refresh (or possibly even the 32nm architecture change).
