Just a day before the fourth quarter of the year begins, Advanced Micro Devices reassured its customers and investors that it is on-track to deliver its highly-anticipated code-named Shanghai microprocessors for servers in Q4 2008, just as promised. According to the company, the new chips are already in production and revenue shipments will begin shortly.

“We’re in full production right now in the factory. People will start getting first silicon from the final production very shortly,” said Pat Patla, general manager of AMD’s server and workstation chip business, in an interview with Cnet News web-site.

AMD Opteron “Shanghai” microprocessors are made using 45nm process technology and feature enlarged 6MB level-three cache in addition to improved HyperTransport 3.0 bus. Besides, some other enhancements allow the new chips to offer higher instructions per clock (IPC) throughput compared to currently available AMD Phenom and AMD Opteron processors, which should transform into higher overall performance per clock.

oooo I cant wait for this, makes me a little sad I just got an Intel Quad desktop though. If they make it to laptops I'll get one.

why sad ... amd barely compete with intel

core 2 quad is killing them !

i hope they dont lose to nehalem

or else intel wont have a reason to give us better cpus for less

Agreed. Your quad intel is a MUCH better investment in every way. No one except these tech article writers cares about what AMD is releasing these days.

AMD is dying slowly, they deserve to die forever.

You must be anxious to start paying $1000 for an average CPU again cause thats what will happen if Intel becomes the only game in town.

if Mom and Dad bought you a Computer with AMD CPU instead....you wouldn't be the intel fanboy...LOL
..but since the computer was on sale at 'dollar saver' with intel....I understand your excitement.

The funny thing is how true that statement is...

hmm... you better watch out, made in China CPUs.. maybe built-in with virus!

i just upgraded from socket 939 amd system to AM2 one unless benchmarks really matter that much AMD still sufficiently powerful enough for most needs i'm a gamer mine keeps up with all games i play even crysis.

They may not be fastest but just like european sports car competition doesn't really matter if it doesn't go 20km/h faster that much just as long as it does the driving normally fine.

Well, I'm happy with my newly built AMD machine. If the Intel counterpart were cheaper; then I would have got that. I'm not biased for either product.
#6.1 RAID 0 on 30 Sep 2008 - 21:34
Exactly. I buy what ever CPU/GPU is best at the time of my purchase.

What's the price range on these new CPUs? All that matters to me is that I can get the best CPU between 180-220$. By "best" I'm speaking in terms of gaming performance, because all of my non-gaming computer activities can be done with a Pentium 3.

you can get

intel Quad core Q6600 2.4 GHZ

@ 180~190 USD

best value for price

for a great value dual core
you can find intel E7300 @ 2.66 GHZ
@ 140$

I would go with the quad core and overclock. The Q6600 is a damn fine CPU. Damn fine!
