Apple has released iTunes 8.0.2 and iPhone software 2.2 today.

According to Apple, iTunes 8.0.2 improves stability and performance and provides a number of bug fixes. The new version addresses a quality issue creating MP3s on some computers; fixes a connectivity issue with the iTunes Store when using some Internet proxies with Mac OS X; and improves accessibility with VoiceOver.

Apple also introduced iPhone v2.2 today.

The update was rumoured to be released today and the promised features are present. The new iPhone 2.2 Software update features enhancements to maps and mail allowing users to now use Google street view. In maps, users can now view public transit and walking directions, display addresses of dropped pins and their share locations via email.

Podcasts are now available for download in the iTunes application and there has been work on a decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls. Apple has improved the stability and performance of Safari and has changed the position of the search bar to be inline with the address bar. Work has also been completed on improved sound quality of Visual Voice mail messages and users can now disable the auto-correction in the keyboard settings. Before you ask there is still no MMS or copy and paste support.

Gizmodo have posted a few screenshots of the new update in action, included below.

A couple of people are working on it at the moment, however, due to app store limitations, when it's finally released, it will only be available for jailbroken devices. However, we should have copy and paste within a couple of months.

Downloading now shame the latest version of iTunes still doesn't fix that annoying error message! *arg!* Everytime I start iTunes I get an error message saying how my burner isn't properly installed or some such, tried everything to fix it but the error keeps coming back....

w00t at last can now disable autocorrect This was the one thing I found hugely annoying going from a jailbroken iPhone to a legit one.

street on the iPhone is a REALLY handy feature. it solves the issues a regular GPS does not: now that I'm on the right street... which one is the right building.

downloading podcasts is also nice. the rumour said that podcasts had a size limite when using 3G (something like 10mb?) - is this still true?
#4.1 creamhackered on 21 Nov 2008 - 10:11
Oh god I hope not. I am gonna download it tonight once I get home. That would suck if there's a 10mb limit!
#4.2 kizzaaa on 21 Nov 2008 - 10:37
Street view doesn't seem to work in Australia.
#5 kizzaaa on 21 Nov 2008 - 10:36
I was just using my headset and when you end a call using the 'microphone button', it doesn't go beep beep any more.

Shame that the Transit times aren't available for NZ yet...would be fantastic. Might send an email to Metro about it. Also, I thought this news post would be better in the software category :p
#6.1 creamhackered on 21 Nov 2008 - 11:26
yes it's software but it's also main news so it'll remain here.

I don't undesrtand the lack of MMS function. Does it represent a technical matter ? or they simply don't care?
#8.1 morficus on 21 Nov 2008 - 15:04
how often do you find your self in the need to use MMS?

I've got a Samsung BlackJack and I have never found my self in the need of sending an MMS. Simply take a pic and ttach it to an e-mail.

MMS is available as an app in the App Store.

I just use e-mail. Even on my old Motorola I still didn't use MMS, though my g/f at the time used it plenty.

MMS is how my hot women send naked pictures of themselves to me. Ergo, MMS is life.

Correction:

MMS is on the way, apparently, and availability will depend on the service provider. It is unavailable at this time, however.

Apologies.

I don't use MMS often, but it'd be nice to have it in the oft case that I did. If for no other reason than to avoid that PITA ViewMyMessage.com crap that AT&T makes us use.

Google "Street View" unavailable for Canadian locations due to privacy concerns raised by the federal gov't.

Potential embarrassments such as public urination, visits to the XXX video store, ball adjustments in public, etc., are at issue.
#10.1 excalpius on 21 Nov 2008 - 16:53
??? The "Street View" isn't a live feed. Are they saying these are in the stills that were photographed and no one found them and removed them?

Here are the articles, ex:

http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2007/09...streetview.html

Yet if I take a picture of a family member in a public area, and other people can be seen in the photo going about their business or whatever, that's alright. Apparently.

It's the line between issues over potential embarrassment, and issues of personal privacy at risk by so much as even appearing in the images.

i dont understand how anyone can believe they have some kind of right to privacy in a public place in this capacity. how is the extremely unlikely event of a google street-view car driving by as you walk into a porn shop any different then the equally unlikely event of someone who knows you walking by and snapping a picture of you walking into above stated porn shop and throwing it on facebook? streaming cameras, weather they be google or government run, on the other hand, is a little orwellian for me.
#10.4 +Dakkaroth on 22 Nov 2008 - 17:26
The argument I don't understand is people being like,"Hurr, I don't want my house being on the internets!!" It's like, how the hell is someone going to match you with your house unless you're being a dumbass giving out your home address to everyone?
#11 sharp65 on 21 Nov 2008 - 16:12
Once again apple shafts the Ipod touch users. None of the enhancements to google maps is available on the ipod touch. I really dont care about street view, but I wanted the public transportation directions.

Apps in the App Store now have multiple, full-screen screenshots.
You can sort App categories by "Top Paid", Top Free" and "Release Date". You can also continue to view 25 additional apps until the list has reached its end.

Oh very slick, I love it! Thanks for pointing that out.

And they added the "update all" back to the AppStpre on the iPhone. Never understood why they took that away in the fist place.
#13 +JMann on 21 Nov 2008 - 21:30
Nice update, seems to make things load a bit quicker as well I think. Now Google just need to get Street Maps for the UK!
(1 reply) #14 +Chicane-UK on 21 Nov 2008 - 23:06
Definately seems to be a good update so far. Safari seems quicker and less crashy, and being able to download Podcasts over the air is a real result.

Thanks Apple

My iPhone (1st gen) after this update felt like they had upgraded the hardware, EVERYTHING is much faster.

I'm really loving this update.

the 2.2 update blew up my new itouch. And according to what I've read and the few people that were at the apple store I was at yesterday were talking about I'm not the only one that has had this problem. sucks but I get to go back and get a new itouch today (they were out yesterday).
