Google has announced that on Wednesday it will expand its current service on Google Maps to track individual user's locations. The feature will allow SmartPhone users to share their locations with others to track user's last location, and help locate each other.

With such a feature, privacy concerns are at risk of helping predators or unwanted people finding out a users location. To combat such issues, Google has implemented a feature where users need to manually turn the tracking feature on, while making it easy to limit access, or disable the service. Google promises not to retain any user's movements, but the store the last location by the user on Google's computers.

The service is available in the United States, and 26 other countries. Each location is marked with a personal picture that only selected users that the owner wishes to share with can see. The service requires users to have a SmartPhone and use either a cell phone tower, GPS, or Wi-Fi to locate their location. Users who wish to limit access can set their privacy to show their location within a few yards, up to the city they are in, depending on the cell phone towers.

Parents can also keep a track on their children right from their PC or laptop, by tracking SmartPhones such as Blackberry's, Windows Mobile devices, Google's Android, and the iPhone with the service enabled.

Is there a reason I can't use my Google Apps account for this?
It's setup as a google account, but this is the one google service I can;t sign into

Interesting idea, though I can't see any situation where anyone would want to broadcast themselves to everyone in the world.

Why would anyone want to do this?

"Dude, I'll meet you near X place ok?!"
10 mins later..
"WTF are you?!"

Enter the locate button. Or you could check where people are without having to call them when your waiting for them to arrive. Awesome idea.

Good news for stalkers.

I'd assume that there would be some kind of approval process (like you might get adding someone to Facebook or Twitter) before they can see your location - but I think it's a pretty fun idea if it's done right!

If I want my girl friend only know where I am, can I do that?
#7.1 ZombieFly on 04 Feb 2009 - 11:48
you have full control over who can monitor your movements. Users have to request permission to see your position in google latitude

Goes Google Maps for Symbian also support this?

The only thing I hate about Google Maps is that you have to have some kind of data connection to download the maps (which in turn, costs money)

With unlimited data I could care less about how much I consume.

Hmmm...this will keep me out of trouble....
Home - work - ATM - bar - strip club - home (arguement) - hotel

*actually they had this for Helio Ocean Phone for a few years now... Buddy Beacon
You can go to a store or club or where ever and activate the buddy beacon. Whoever else is on your Buddy list can see you. So you need to subscribe to each other. Then you can unsubscribe each other if you end up having a friend as a stalker (or a stalker as a friend)

Don't think I'll every sing up for this type of service. I like being able to tell my friends I'm not when I actually am because I just don't want to be disturbed. Bad enough I have family members that don't understand the concept that unannounced visits is rude!
#11 duntkno on 04 Feb 2009 - 14:58
i think this is really cool... glad its from google to.
#12 C_Guy on 04 Feb 2009 - 15:23
I don't know who is so lacking in self-esteem that they feel the need to broadcast their current location as if anyone else actually cares. It's like kids who update their Facebook status every 5 minutes on their phone... who the bleep do you think is sitting at a computer refreshing your page every 5 minutes? Get a life.

This is just another quality privacy-invasion technology from the "do-no-evil" Google.

What happens if your child gets kidnapped? You'd want to track their location. But most children don't have smartphones, but it is a good piece of technology to have, might come standard one a phone one day

This is only a test, soon we will RFID chips. This just eases transition lol

A different view on this:

http://www.naturalnews.com/025522.html

Domestic stalking, here we come? Will every husband/wife always check that he is transmitting the location, if let's say a partner turns it on for you while you are taking a shower?
#15.1 hotrod on 05 Feb 2009 - 02:34
Quote from article: There is a way to thwart this technology, of course: Remove the battery from your mobile phone if you don't want to be tracked. Turning it off isn't good enough, either: You actually have to physically remove the battery to be sure you're not being tracked.

That just shows you how moronic the guy is that wrote this. Do you folks believe everything the internet tells you? How hard do you really think it is for a company like google to acquire GPS coordinates of cell towers and using the providers data showing what towers your phone picks up, turn that into an application? I've been using google maps on my NON-GPS Blackberry since they released it and the app has always been able to come close to judging your whereabouts and now that you can share this with friends that you MUTS allow access they are now supporting stalkers and other idiots?
#15.2 hotrod on 05 Feb 2009 - 02:38
And more proof of this guys lack of knowledge: There's no reason why the government couldn't one day subpoena Google's cell phone triangulation logs and request an archived history of the movements of one particular person.

This data would be stored by your cellular provider not Google. If law enforcement wanted to supeona your provider they could do it today whether or not you've used Latitude or not...
#16 +macf13nd on 04 Feb 2009 - 18:49
pah - coming soon on iPhone. useless!
#17 hotrod on 05 Feb 2009 - 02:28
Guys get over the privacy nonsense. Did you read the bit about functionality or better yet try it out for yourself?? You only allow the people you want to be able to see where you're at and you can do it at a detailed level, city level, or hide yourself from anybody. I've got three co-workers that we're all watching each other and it's very cool for us to see where each other is at and who's going to get the best parking spot in the mornings

You aren't broadcasting your location to every Tom Dick and Harry so get over it.....
