Report a problem

I am a PC and I am 4 1/2 years old

Advertisement (Why?)
Neowin reported earlier about the new Windows ad which is a part of a new phase in the Ad Campaign called Rookies. The ad will be premiered during the Grammy Awards on Sunday, but, Microsoft has already opened up their Rookies (new ad campaign) website.

You can either wait until its premiered or you can watch the new ad below

Video: Kylie

The new ad features a 4 year old girl Kylie who uses Windows Live Photo Gallery to import pictures from her camera, enhance pictures and send it to her family. The underlying message, however is how easy are Windows Products to use, and no wonder Kylie brings out the message so clear!

This new ad certainly continues the "I am a PC" era!

The ad is very nice. How much it contrasts with the PC bashing of Apple ads...
#3.1 excalpius on 08 Feb 2009 - 02:17
Yes, well the Apple ads are just about niche marketing. A selective use of the bandwagon approach.

You know, It's not a bad ad, until u realize the girl was coached to do it... i mean, she didn't sit there and read the manual herself, she hasn't done any troubleshooting.... basically she emphasizes how easy it can be when nothing goes wrong.... BUT, if something DOES go wrong, well she'd be pounding her head against the wall like the rest of the mainstream windows users :p Okay, she won't be that upset, but she'd definitely need to ask someone else... Most 4 year olds arent smart enough to go thru windows help and actually be able to understand what those ridiculous and (sometimes) confusing help files say....

I'm just sayin..... ;-)
#8.1 Rolith on 08 Feb 2009 - 02:21
or...she'd go ask her mommy and daddy...

who probbly showed her how to do it in the first place...

My nephew (a little older) does the same basic stuff all the time, and plays flash games on sites we bookmarked for him. I get emails from him all the time that are nothing more then really really bad photo lists... it's cute and he's learning how to use a computer.
#8.2 Electric Bolt on 08 Feb 2009 - 03:00
Well I know a girl who is about 10 and she is one of my really young friends, and she has figured out bunches on the computer. Yes the girl in this ad was coached to do it, but it also is that easy these days. My friend knows to google when she can't figure out stuff, she has been doing that since she was young too, like since she was like 6. I'm sure just a couple years from now, and this will be very realistic to this girl, I'd say when she is 5 or 6 she will be doing this in reality.
#8.3 Minimoose on 08 Feb 2009 - 08:34
You realise that we learn to walk, speak etc... We also learn to use a computer, Microsoft are just showing how they have made complicated technology easy enough for a 4 year old to use, with some help from parents. Good advert.

#8.6 mmck on 08 Feb 2009 - 15:39
The fact they are able to coach a 4 1/2 year old to do it shows its ease.

In the unlikely circumstance something does go drastically wrong you get help from a professional. Just like when your car breaks down or your house needs repairing.

What you are saying is similar to saying teaching young kids to use the toilet isnt useful - as they cant fix the toilet when it breaks? Can you do everything a plumber, electrician, mechanic etc. etc. can do?

Pretty good so far as computer service advertisements go.

The only question I've got: "I'm taking this picture and sending it to my family". The girl is 4 years old: where the hell are her parents and why are they so far away this kid needs to send them a picture of the fish rather than just carrying the fish bowl to them?

You're kidding right? I've never had to "replace" a USB port no matter how many noobs have (ab)used it...
(15 replies) #11 DanielZ on 08 Feb 2009 - 02:44
I think this was a staged effort. Most 4 year olds aren't tech-savvy enough to figure out how to put in a USB port. Come to think of it, a lot of 40 year old's don't know how to either.

My 2yr old knows how to put usb cords in the right spot (without damage). It's not being tech savvy, it's about shapes lol. now if only i could teach him how to do my work for me.

my 4 year old can plug our Sony in via USB and choose a photo. He then opens Skype, rings 'nanny far away' and sends her the file.

But DanielZ is probably correct, MOST 4 year olds aren't tech savvy.

You can't expect someone to do something without showing them. That goes for all people!

My brother is 9 and knows how to install games as well as send me emails.
#11.12 Persephone on 08 Feb 2009 - 16:37
The level of tech-savvy of a child, or anyone for that matter, depends heavily on exposure and the encouragement of others. Most young children would struggle because they don't get allowed near the grown up toys :p

If a child can pick up the complexities of a human language then a computer should be no trouble at all. At that age you are a learning-curiosity machine.
#11.13 Fish on 08 Feb 2009 - 21:43
Tech-savvy, no. But kids soak it up like a sponge. My 4 year old daughter knows nothing about computers, but she does know how to switch mine on, log in to her profile and click on the shortcuts on her desktop to watch a film.

My point is, children can easily remeber how to perform a series of actions to get to a required goal, and clearly this is what is happening in this ad.

Living where I do, I never had the chance to even USE an Apple, just saw it on a store. So I use a PC, and I love Windows just like the next guy in neowin.

That said, this was a boring ad, C'mon! It's a little girl using a PC and... So what? I know, "it's easy to use, see?" And it's a little girl, so it's cute, everybody likes little girls... the next ad should be witch kittens! AND another kid! That would be great! [/sarcasm]

I hope to see an Apple response.

Linux is a Shareware OS for people who need/want/desire to save $100 and have no need of running modern computer software, games, or professional applications. They browse the web, do web mail, share files, and many are programmers. Some of them run Linux for the sole reason that they still hold a grudge from when Microsoft broke a date with them (or something similar).

Linux has come to the point where you can do almost anything with it. Almost every Windows app has a Linux alternative. And if you do need to run a Windows app, Wine is pretty good with emulating Windows.

You shouldn't try to comment on things you clearly know very little about.

It's well known that you can do pretty much anything on Linux that you can elsewhere. Games really are the only things you'd struggle with.

Exactly. Those who make fun of Linux for "not having anything" clearly haven't used the latest distros like Arch and Ubuntu. Linux is getting more and more polished, and even MS acknowledges it as a real threat to Windows.

No, it hasn't.

You can do the ROUTINE things I mentioned above reliably with it. But in any professional business application or professional creative/graphics/content creation environment, there is no "suitable alternative" and it's laughable to say there is. GIMP, for example, is NOT even in the same league as Photoshop...period. Maya, LightWave 3D, Premiere, After Effects, AVID, the list goes on and on and on with NOTHING even close to professional grade available. Even if the programs can be rigged to work, there is the issue of plug-ins not compiled, etc. etc.

And no, Blender isn't even fit to be run as a plug-in for the application above.

And to claim that WINE works "pretty good" is neither accurate nor sufficient in ANY professional environment.

WINE might work well enough for hobbyists at home to play around with it...but any professional who relied on Wine or Linux to get the job done is a fool of the highest caliber.

To claim otherwise is just defensive posturing and self-fulfilling delusions. I'm sorry if that somehow breaks your bubble. But reality can do that sometimes.

#14.17 tiddlie on 09 Feb 2009 - 21:31
Isn't this argument getting a little old? There's core business reasons why companies pick certain servers, not just this silly argument. Both systems handle IPSEC tunneling perfectly well, both systems quite happily run behind a decent firewall.

I think the core issue here is staff. Companies are willing to spend more cash on training staff on a Linux based server than they are on Windows. Linux is seen as (and is, at its base level) a more complex system to work with, whereas Windows is very much point and click for most tasks.

With that extra training however, comes a certain level of knowledge on how to secure a server against hacks. Average joe Windows server tech might have read the books, but because its deemed an easier system to work with will never have been instructed on the basic security that's required.

Both systems do the job equally well. There's plenty more issues here than 'ZOMG! Windows sux. Linux FTW!'

yeah as long as she is using a standard user account that wouldn't be so much of an issue.
#16.3 tiddlie on 09 Feb 2009 - 21:35
Windows can be secured down as far as it needs to be secured, on each individual user account. It's just not something that average users ever touch. The Linux community is more tech savy in general, and is obviously happy with command line control of the system. 'Local Security Policy' in the mmc can heavily restrict users.

Windows just simplifies things (possibly too far), as they understand that a large majority of the users they have to cater for are consumers who do not understand high level security restrictions.

No, I just don't see how people who "hate" him so much to be so whooped on his response. No, he doesn't always bring Apple to the conversation. By you wanting him to be here to give his comments on it though, you're pretty much just looking for an argument. You're asking for Apple to be brought into this, as well as others. The story never mentioned Apple at all!

As for your last statement, grow up.

I'll say this again:

A few times I agree with his comments, others I think he's too 'preachy.' But never would I intentionally bait him into a thread, no matter how 'extreme' he sounds to some of you.

In case you haven't realized, both myself and dead.cell have disagreed with him many times and aren't his disciple or bitch.

You obiously don't know how to read or you just seem to read the things you want (This is point 1)

Like I said, he has improved lately (point 1)
And I dont want him here at all; I was just commenting that its strange he hasnt posted in here yet since he always seems to post in Windows related topics that have nothing to do with Apple.
A bunch of stories havent mentioned Apple yet he comes in here with his Apple glory. So thats ok but me asking about him in a nonApple Windows topic is wrong? Guess you must be the type of person that a guy hitting a girl is wrong but a girl hitting a guy he is just a pussy right? Double standards I call them.

My last statement was "If this doesnt intrest YOU then dont comment or ignore it." I should grow up because of that? (Point 1) I think you need to get your nose out of other people's business.

Of course he has posted in non tech threads and his ideas are OK and I agree with him. I have no problem with that.
I wasnt talking about you, I was talking about dead.cell who seems to defend him at every given chance lately.

If I don't want you here, guess what: I put up with it. Intentionally trying to create hostility on the website just because you don't like someone is no excuse. Saying that they've "improved" doesn't make your statement any better.

Secondly, my point on growing up had to do with the "bitch" statement you made. How suggesting you to stop worrying about others, especially a known troll, means I'm in favor of that person is beyond me. Perhaps you're just angry because I replied to you instead of the others above. I dunno, I was here, not there, so I clicked reply. My apologies if I offended you.

And as for "other people's business", perhaps you shouldn't post on a public forum if you don't want people to voice their concerns about what you say and/or yourself as a person.

Im just simply posting my opinion on a member's views of a certain topic. Im creating hostility? Ive created more hostility against antiVista members than LTD. I don't consider my statement bad at all so if you want to consider it bad, thats your problem

Exactly. You have NOTHING to do with this at all. I mean nothing. It would be like if there was a thread that said "Women only: Pick your favorite nailpolish" and you posted there saying "I dont like nailpolish". 1: You aint a woman (AFAIK) 2: If you don't like nailpolish, why the hell are you posting. And you are free to reply to anything, but trust me: I aint a member that just shuts up so I will reply to you

I don't give a.... ....about what people think of me as a person. They are all behind a screen typing on a keyboard. Noone knows anyone (there are exceptions of course) so you voicing your concerns and opinions about me is like putting them on paper: I wipe my ass with them

And take the nailpolish example: It is the same thing as sticking you nose in other people's business.

This is what computer ads should be about. About the actual product and how it works.

#36 Bioran23 on 08 Feb 2009 - 14:27
That's an adorable ad, and definitely the best ad out of this campaign yet. Can't wait to see the rest of it - hope it's as good as this one! If they keep this quality up, hopefully MS will see some positive results.

I'm sure this ad failed to mention the 38 steps and three wizards it took to e-mail that photo.

Do you know that since XP it is nearly impossible for a user to see a bluescreen because his computer restarts automatically when it happens?

You = fail.
#37.3 excalpius on 08 Feb 2009 - 21:45
No, if the posters above had actually used Windows in the past few years, they'd know their comments are about as dated as parachute pants.
#37.4 DanielZ on 09 Feb 2009 - 00:49
Oh wow. So now it restarts. How convenient. So they still have errors and failures, they just keep quiet about it and just restart.

And parachute pants are still in style, you young whippersnapper!

But there aren't 38 steps or 3 wizards to e-mail that photo... It launches a new e-mail message with the photos already attached.

Blue Screens are so 1999.

I like that advert. Sure the girl will probably have needed to be shown what to, but it was easy enough for her to learn. I'm pretty certain that it would be similar if she was sat in front of any other OS.

I hope Apple will come up with something similar instead of more of the embarrassing PC bashing...
(3 replies) #39 atari800 on 08 Feb 2009 - 17:26
Apple will not stand for this. They are in production of a commercial showing a fertilized egg using garage band as we speak.
#39.1 Minimoose on 08 Feb 2009 - 18:19
I would really love to see them pull that off, it would probably make me buy a mac as well...
#39.2 DanielZ on 09 Feb 2009 - 02:00
I've got an even better idea. How about a sperm cell using the iPhone's GPS to find its way to the egg?
Apple- So simple that a sperm cell can use it

A very good ad. Its good to see that MS haven't jumped on the Apple bandwagon by slagging their main competitor off and instead demonstrating how powerful and easy their products are.

Good commercial. It shows Windows' improved usability and simplicity instead of spouting broad, inaccurate garbage about their competitors.

Now who does that?? lol
#46 mclaren05 on 09 Feb 2009 - 13:41
Hmm You gotta think what does the average consumer like more:
A ad with a cute kid.
A ad bashing the competition.

Apple ads were cute at first.....but now.....

The original Apple ads were feature-based as well, but they've turned into complete MS-bashing in the last year or so. I wish they'd stop making fun of Vista and go back to promoting their products...
#49 RebelSean on 09 Feb 2009 - 18:55
I must say, this brought a huge smile to my face. It's a huge move from bashing other products, to promoting their own. Thumbs up from me.
