TV stations cut analog signal today

As Neowin had previously reported about the DTV switch on February 17, 2009, 491 stations will end broadcast of their analog signal today at 11:59pm. More stations are due to end their signal, up to 641 stations across America will do so this week or have already ended their broadcast.

President Barack Obama has asked that more than 100 stations delay until the new cut off date of June 12, 2009 so that American viewers still not fully converted will not lose all their favorite stations.

It is still unclear how many homes are still not ready to handle the switch over from analog to a digital signal, requiring consumers to purchase a new TV or upgrade their existing one to include a digital converter box. An estimate 5.8 million people (5.1 percent of America) have not converted or do not know about the change over, even with previous warnings across TV broadcasts.

As of tomorrow morning, some Americans will officially be in the dark on their favourite stations as their analog signal will fail to broadcast.

The DTV articles just aren't the same without it.

It makes me laugh every time I watch it
#2 derekivey on 18 Feb 2009 - 03:24
I still can't believe that they delayed the DTV transition. People have had plenty of time to get ready!

I wonder how many people have flipped out already when they were watching tv then suddenly nothing.

WHY DID THEY CHANGE?!!!

#3.1 Sevan on 18 Feb 2009 - 03:45
Haha, yeah.
#3.2 Dane on 18 Feb 2009 - 04:23
Just wait for it, on the news they will have people bitching and moaning about it " I didn't know it was going to change!!!!! It's not fair!"

I wonder how many people like me discovered they don't have a VHF ready antenna. My Terk TV5 is supposed to pick up VHF. But it isn't. Fortunately most channels are staying on UHF. Except the local one. So they are getting a tons of complaints with people and bad antenna's. I've got a $55 Tivax box. Everything ran fine up until the switch at 1pm cst. then dead black silence. Supposedly one says it might have to do with an FM filter on the Terks between the 6--7 frequencies. Since the local one is on channel 7 that figures. I'm being told we need a high powered rooftop antenna. Whats the use of having a $40 coupon when the antenna will cost more?
#3.4 Dane on 18 Feb 2009 - 14:32
Damn, that sucks about your antenna!
#3.5 PatrynXX on 18 Feb 2009 - 20:46
Someone should have thought about that. Local channel is recommending people to get ROOFTOP antenna's to pick up the channel. o_O Bet that old lady up there didn't think about that one. Unless she's lived in the house and never removed the rooftop antenna. Has everything to do with moving from UHF to VHF. VHF is better on the roof I guess. Which means F*** the local channel. If they wanna be on VHF. fine. I'm not Forking out $60-100 for a rooftop antenna.
#3.6 Foub on 18 Feb 2009 - 22:14
That's easy, PatrynXX. Get cable.

I live in Southern Oregon and all but 2 stations are flipping the switch tonight as originally ordered. It is amazing the number of people who still haven't gotten the converter box and have delayed. I think I will go to the local electronics store tomorrow to see how many people run to the shelves asking for the converters. lol

They did a write up in my local paper yesterday regarding the switch and a hotline was put up during a news cast where 200+ people called in and didn't even know about it. Jeez!

Unless you never go to the store, read the paper, go online, watch TV, or listen to the radio, it has to be hard to miss.

I say for those that haven't gotten the boxes that should have (those that don't have cable/sat), they will be frustrated when they are suddenly sold out in a few days time.

What are they missing then? ;P

If only I had some rabbit ears around, wanted to watch the switch get flipped

seems rabbit ears are able to pick it up compared to amplified antennas. Had someone tell me just pull the old rabbit ears out. Threw those out ages ago.

It's about time they did this in Britain.

Digital receivers have been out for at least 10 years.

Problem we have though, still why something has not been done, is, there are still holes in the
coverage area.

Though some regions such as Borders, West Country and Wales started in 2008 and should be finishing before the second half of 2009.

The analog frequencies from other broadcast towers can still be sought.

I hope as soon as digital is nationwide, they get rid of the poxy TV licence as the BBC advertise a lot on their digital channels.

Get rid of the tv licence?
It's a licence to recieve
#6.2 Unplugged on 18 Feb 2009 - 08:56
No its not.

Its their ( partly to make money for the government ) and to fund the BBCs mundane attempts at having ad free tv ( which is not optional )

The amount used to enforce it makes it a further joke only needed because an increasingly overwhelming majority would support it being scrapped.
#6.3 camsoft on 18 Feb 2009 - 09:03
I have to completely disagree.

Unplugged, I would gladly pay the license fee so that I don't get crappie advert breaks every 15 minutes.

Leesmithg, The BBC don't advertise. I don't know what channels you are watching but I have never seen an ad break on a BBC programme.

The BBC do have idents between programming to bring attention to their own shows but they do not interfere with programmes, or programme schedule.

I personally find that the BBC have some of the best output on TV, Hustle, Spooks, TopGear, Dr Who, Planet Earth etc. I would hate to see the license fee go, and see the BBC turn into another iTV.

#6.4 BigCheese on 18 Feb 2009 - 10:05
I would hate to see the license fee go, and see the BBC turn into another iTV.

I'd gladly pay the licence fee so that never happens. ITV has no programmes worth watching. ITV is as bad as five now.
#6.5 acnpt on 18 Feb 2009 - 12:44
The licence fee should be free for students, and maybe people earning under a certain amount.
#6.6 fenfe1 on 18 Feb 2009 - 13:02
100% agree with camsoft, the bbc news & website is second to none, and iPlayer allows me to watch only the programs I want when I want to see them (you don't even need a license to do so as long as your in the UK)

Is it me or this part doesn't make any sense at all?

"President Brarack Obama has asked that more than 100 stations delay until the new cut off date of June 12, 2009 so that American viewers still not fully converted will lose all their favorite stations."

Just you. Obama has asked some stations to delay cutting off analog (even though they are free to do so) so people who haven't switched won't lose all their stations while they purchase a converter box. Companies are free to stop analog anywhere between Feb 17 and June 12 2009.
#7.3 Gamerhomie on 18 Feb 2009 - 08:11
He's the one who wanted to delay it.
#7.4 BigCheese on 18 Feb 2009 - 10:08
so people who haven't switched won't lose all their stations

What you wrote there is different to what it says in the article.

NGPixel misquoted the article, it says "will NOT".
(1 reply) #8 djlegion on 18 Feb 2009 - 11:27
How do people not know if you need to do this or not. It's so clear. And how do some people not know how to install a converter box. Wow.
#8.1 dj_alex_m on 18 Feb 2009 - 11:53
Exactly, and even if they did delay this, those people that still don't have what they need still won't have what they need. Throw everyone in the deep end I say. Get it over and done with.

A delay in the switch will not change anything.
#9 DanielZ on 18 Feb 2009 - 18:40
I'm glad they finally switched. The people who complain are the ignorant morons. They had plenty of time. Let's just call the DTV switch a punishment for stupid people.
#10 TRC on 18 Feb 2009 - 19:37
Now that the stations have switched how bad is the chaos? Why couldn't they have waited, this disaster could have been avoided and there wouldn't have been so many needless deaths!

That's how stupid the idiots behind the delay sounded; seriously. One congress critter actually said it would be a catastrophe.
#11 EJocys on 19 Feb 2009 - 14:30
... or do not know about the change over...

All stations can turn off analog with last video showing invasion of aliens. Then boom! All signals are gone.
#12 Davo on 21 Feb 2009 - 00:20
I work at RadioShack and people were ridiculous about this. Having some questions is fine but acting like this was something unannounced is unbelievable.
