Update: The original source has uploaded a brief video showcasing the the alleged new Mac Mini.

An image has appeared over on the MacRumors discussion boards of what appears to be the eagerly anticipated next generation Mac Mini.

Details are still scarce, but the source claims the new Mini will ship with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory and a SATA Super Drive. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the apparent inclusion of a FireWire port, which Apple controversially axed from the new unibody MacBook range in October.

Apple was expected to unveil a revised Mini back at MacWorld in January, but failed to deliver leaving many consumers bitterly disappointed. The new hardware, like the MacBook family, is expected to be powered by NVIDIA chipsets.

The Mac Mini was last updated in August 2007.

I say fake, because the mac-mini is due for a hardware refresh, and this is the same as it was back in 2005.

I don't think so, other then updating the insides there is little else Apple can really do with it. To be honest I kind of expect the new Mac Mini to be almost (visually) identical to the previous model but obviously with better insides.

Not really, as its an older design. Why, after what? 3 -4 years keep the same design?

Wouldn't surprise me if Apple tried to milk this enclosure longer. Although I really wish they'd refresh it with an all aluminum enclosure. Tapering the edges would allow it to be thinner but it might run its stackablity which would be a bad thing. I just dislike the plastic, makes it feel cheap.

2GHZ Core2Duo? Are you kidding me? I demand a Quad in there.
#2.1 Chris-Gonzales on 20 Feb 2009 - 00:37
The mac-mini is a budject machine. you want your quad you buy the big daddy
#2.2 PsykX on 20 Feb 2009 - 02:08
Yeah, I wouldn't see a quad-core in a low-end machine. This thing is gonna be like 600 USD.
A higher frequency of Core2Duo, maybe. But no quad-core.

How can you exect a QuadCore when the iMac still don't have it. The mini is for the low-end of the market.

Still, 2.0Ghz is slow by today standard. It could be faster. But paired with the nVidia 9400, it will be much better than with the Intel chipset.

And again, 2Gb of memory, when everybody else is moving along to 3,4 and even 6Gb of RAM. Tight space...

Bah, I want a high end mini!
#3.2 Chris-Gonzales on 20 Feb 2009 - 00:38
Wont happen. get over it
#3.3 vetsanctified on 20 Feb 2009 - 00:44
2.0ghz slow? 2gb DDR of memory low?

Do you understand this machine is not for editing HD video right? Its more than enough for other functions. Hell, it can even use Photoshop very nicely and that is something that the average Mac Mini user is not going to do.

Bah, I want a high end mini!

Get a shuttle xpc or something then.
#3.5 Furrybeagle on 20 Feb 2009 - 01:41
What sanctified said exactly. Although it could probably even get by editing HD video if it needed to.

We are at the point now where increasingly faster processors only affect very niche markets: science, graphics, video, gamers, etc.

What we really should be complaining about is the lack of a mid range tower, or even a cheaper Mac Pro. Since the PowerMac G3 in 1999 Apple almost always offered a PowerMac that cost $1499 - $1699, up until mid-2005. But even then, Apple offered PowerMacs that cost $1999. Mac Pros have never been cheaper than $2499, though, which is way out of reach for a lot of people. The only option for people who want to spend sub-$2000 on their computer is to buy an iMac, which means they're are forced to trade power and expandability for a built in display and small form factor. The iMacs are beautiful machines, but not a whole lot of bang for your buck.

I guess on the other hand, though, PowerBook / MacBook Pro prices have gotten a lot cheaper over the years...

Haha, that and no Mac will get a Quad-Core for the next few years. They keeps their building costs down by using old technology, and keep the prices up by convincing everyone that their technology is 'revolutionary'

When did you take a look at apple.com last time? In 1995? I won't bother arguing with you because you look insanely close-minded about Apple, but if you hate them so much, then I'll give you a trick :

Don't. Post. In. Apple's. Related. Stuff. Thx.

I'll answer then, Mac pro's have 2 quad cores in dual socket configurations

Weak and really outdated if they keep that exterior, the Dell Studio Hybrid is far better looking now. The mini was awesome but it needs a real refresh.
#4.1 PsykX on 20 Feb 2009 - 02:20
I think the Dell Studio Hybrid, even if it's a real competitor to the Mac Mini, has a design that cannot be compared to the Mini.

I wouldn't see Apple (in 2009) making a design with edges rounded so much and with the little support it comes with and the stuff written in front of it. I think it's just something really really fancy but nothing I would call "eye appealing".
#4.2 bob_c_b on 20 Feb 2009 - 12:02
LOL, well having owned an original PPC mini and a Core Duo I feel pretty sae in saying Apple will gladly offer something underpowered in that model. And the "writing" thing, the world "hybrid' is hardly a novella? You wouldn't call it eye appealing but many would, at this point more eye appealing than more aluminum.
#5 m.keeley on 20 Feb 2009 - 02:07
You'd have thought that they'd update the case this time around as everything else has been apart from the Mac Pro but perhaps because it's so small they've decided it's not really worth it?
#6 jamesyfx on 20 Feb 2009 - 02:18
The Mac Mini is meant to be a cheap barebones solution right?

I'm assuming if they keep the original design it'll save manufacturing costs, and bring prices down.

My first Mac was a "Mac Plus" bought Dec. 1987, by second came in 1998 (Power Mac), so I quess it is time to do an update, however, it won't be a mini; it will be an another Power Mac. What is unique about this new purchase is that it will cost close to the same as the "Mac Plus" of 1987. So in a sense the price for the high end mac's pretty much remained the same over the years. Oh, and they was another Mac in between the "87" plus and "98" power; it was a Color Mac 1993.

. . .and they was - sorry - should have been . . .and there was

Also I have a Gateway FX 7026, Intel Q9300 Core 2 Quad @2.5 x 4 Ghz, Geforce 8800 GT Overclocked graphics card, 4 Gigs of DDR2 PC6400 Ram, running triple boot (Suse Linux 11.1 64, Vista 64 and Win 7 64).

Ain't life fun.
#8 Aquafox on 20 Feb 2009 - 08:05
sadly the fact that a new mac mini is going to be developed / released means that one of the best features is going to be lost...the fact that it was cheap. It gives apple another reason to increase the price on it
#9 VT-Vincent on 20 Feb 2009 - 14:21
I don't think they would increase the price - this would be counter-productive to the entire concept of the Mac mini. I am glad to see it's getting a substantial update though, it's long overdue.

It's been proven fake over at MacRumors. Enjoy.
