Advertisement (Why?)
After Kylie and Alexa, we had 'Battle between the Rookies' in the Rookies ad campaign, which brought mixed response amongst viewers. Here again we have Adam, who is 8 years old using Windows Live Photo Gallery to create a slide show. He puts together a slide show of his animal toy collection. This ad looks better than the 'Battle between the Rookies' and works good in getting the message along which is, How easy are Windows products to use

Watch how Adam uses Windows Live Photo Gallery to create a slide show

The Rookies: Adam, Age 8

The ads are still focusing Windows Live Photo Gallery and not sure whether the next set of ads will focus on other Windows products

Update

There seems to be some confusion with the tool Adam uses to create the slide show.

He first uses Windows Movie Maker to select pictures

Then uses Windows Live Photo Gallery to get more information about the picture

Then uses Windows Movie Maker to create the slide show along with a background music being added to the slide show

And yet finally the ad ends as

Even in the earlier 'Battle between the Rookies' series - 8 Vs 80 ad which again focusses on Windows Live Photo Gallery, Adam uses Windows Movie Maker!

The ad is certainly not focussing on Windows Live Photo Gallery as said in the Rookies website and it is very clear now that they are indeed using Windows Movie Maker to create slide shows. However, the ad does focus on the concept of how easy are Windows products to use.

Are these ads focussing Windows products or only Windows Live Photo Gallery?

These ads are really turning out to be awesome. I mean instead of bashing the competition and pointing out flaws, work with the advantages of your own product.

Good going Microsoft

Another win for the Microsoft marketing dept.
#2.1 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:11
Another loose you mean. See my comment bellow about this featuring movie maker, and not photo gallery
#2.2 xendrome on 28 Feb 2009 - 12:11
I'm not grammar Nazi, but at least learn how to spell "lose" and I will assume "bellow" was a typo....
#2.3 -Vivicidal- on 28 Feb 2009 - 14:02
Xendrome has a point...
#2.4 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 18:49
I think the point here is to talk about the windows ad and not bash on my spelling errors.

Really? Are you really that excited about an ad?
(4 replies) #4 tehporp on 28 Feb 2009 - 02:50
its getting boring
#4.1 CalumJR on 28 Feb 2009 - 05:07
I don't think so. I love this whole "Windows - life without walls" business. To those saying "you can't have Windows without walls", well you can... you can have windows that haven't been fitted yet

I seriously think this and the "Start" campaign really are very clever. They've turned the "I'm a PC" into something which isn't 'old and boring' and I think each new advert I see from them is a step in the right direction, not a step in the 'boring' direction...
#4.2 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 05:19
It may be a bit corny at times, but Microsoft is changing their image, and still are, so give them slack
#4.3 +d4v1d05 on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:47
@CalumJR, you mean like having a retail boxed vista, that you haven't installed yet, because you use OS X/Linux instead?
#4.4 excalpius on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:57
^^ and that is relevant to anything in this discussion...why exactly?!

Thats not Photo Gallery, its MOVIE MAKER (and the vista one, not the live verson)
#6.1 Chaks on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:13
I am still having this doubt, but the Rookies website still says its Windows Live Photo Gallery
#6.2 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:17
It "says" its photo, but its movie maker.

also, I'm talking about the ad with the kid who has those toy animals.
#6.3 bolix on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:44
While it is Movie Maker that makes the slideshows, Photo Gallery makes it easier to use. You select the pictures then click Make -> Make Movie and it opens Movie Maker with all the pictures inside. You just have to arrange them and Publish the video. It does show that Photo Gallery makes it easier to do other stuff.
#6.4 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:46
Not quite. Put together bad...
#6.5 dhan on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:50
You can directly launch Movie Make from the "Make" menu option "Make movie". So they are not entirely wrong. ;-)
#6.6 CalumJR on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:47
@Chris-Gonzales -

Please use the 'Report a Problem' feature to report issues with the articles, in future The reporters and editors do not see these kind of issues if posted in the comments like this; however, if you use the 'Report a Problem' feature, they will definitely see it.

Also, posting it in the comments here really does de-rail the discussion, which I am sure you will agree on.

Thank you

Well not as annoying as the mac ads, but it's getting there.
#7.1 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:59
Speaking of mac ads, there hasn't been a new one in months....
#7.2 CalumJR on 28 Feb 2009 - 05:04
No, there hasn't... hopefully they've stopped for good and found a more respectful way to advertise
#7.3 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 05:07
Didn't Justin Long have a movie he was filming?

I hope they stopped to. Get back to the old way of apple ads. Not so much the return of "think different" but some catchy phrase.

But thats for another topic
#7.4 DanielZ on 28 Feb 2009 - 17:21
Nah, the Apple ads should go back to advertising features, rather than plainly bashing MS.
#7.5 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:46
Hence, what I just said
(4 replies) #8 +Rappy on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:17
He's clearly using movie maker, I thought this when I saw the advert and had to look up the gallery.
#8.1 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:21
Same here. I knew automatically when I saw the black command bar

Does Microsoft think we are stupid or something?
#8.2 dhan on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:49

#8.3 nekkidtruth on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:58
@Chris-Gonzales,

Oh so you mean the black bar was more obvious than the fact that the title bar of the window actually SAYS "Movie Maker"
#8.4 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 05:00
No, The command bar in movie maker is black in vista. When I saw that (on TV, few nights ago) i knew right away. I didnt need to look at a title bar.
#9 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:23
Come to think of it, its both PG and MM. But movie maker is the one most will notice. (black bar, come on!
#10 Anaron on 28 Feb 2009 - 03:47
Great ad. It's a step in the right direction for Microsoft. By the way, he's using Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker. About 8 seconds in the video, the programs instantaneously switch.
(2 replies) #11 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:10
The first shot uses a "fake" shot (as shown in the top updated photo)
#11.1 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:57
What I mean by this is, the first image has no title bar, few visual changes. Microsoft tweaked this for some reason.....
#11.2 rm20010 on 28 Feb 2009 - 07:28
Yeah, it looks like a severed version of Live Photo Gallery.
(5 replies) #12 Baked on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:34
Love the ads.....At least MS don't have to bash the competition to get people to watch it!

Yes its Movie Maker n Photo Gallery big deal, The point is how easy it is to use even a 8yr old can use it.
#12.1 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:55
Point is that, but also the many mistakes microsoft makes along the way in these ads... and those who catch them will call them out on it.

I still how dobuts these kids from the past 3 or so ads did everything by them selves 100% of the way, I mean, its possible they did it 100%, but still..,
#12.2 Glendi on 28 Feb 2009 - 09:51
@Chris: Kids learn fast. They taught them and they made it. I bet you've never taught a kid something.
#12.3 Chris-Gonzales on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:47
I got all my computer knowledge from learning it my self. (my 10th year now, started at age 9) But you arnt quit getting what i;m saying
#12.4 excalpius on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:59
^^ They get it. They disagree, as we ALL know 8 year olds who are doing this sort of thing these days, in Vista and OS X.
#12.5 Chris-Gonzales on 01 Mar 2009 - 02:24
Not all 8 year olds..
(1 reply) #13 andrewbares on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:47
According to the clock on the 8 year old's PC, it took him 11 HOURS to make that slideshow!!

The clock goes from 9:00 in the first screen shot to 20:00 in the last shot, at least that's what I read from it.

Microsoft products are sure easy to use, it will only take all of the afternoon to make a slideshow! Just kidding, but the marketing team messed up when filming that one!

Poor kid, he had to sit in front of that laptop for +11 hours. At least he probably made bank!
#13.1 Michael Jacob on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:58
I hope he did helped his family.
#14 Michael Jacob on 28 Feb 2009 - 04:58
they should have added Windows Photo Gallery + Windows Movie Maker. It's that easy.
(9 replies) #15 WhoTheF on 28 Feb 2009 - 09:43
So when's this gonna stop on neowin? I mean, we don't see any other ads on front page except for MS and it's getting a little annoying.
#15.1 bmaher on 28 Feb 2009 - 11:49
http://www.neowin.net/news/main/08/10/20/n...t-microsoft-ads

An almost identical article - with an Apple ad - from October.
#15.2 dcoaster on 28 Feb 2009 - 12:54
Does he mean actual site ads on the front page are all Windows/Microsoft ads?
#15.3 +macf13nd on 28 Feb 2009 - 18:45
the ads would be automagically generated based on the content you are reading anyway, no?
#15.4 WhoTheF on 28 Feb 2009 - 21:21
No I mean the articles about MS Ads. I've seen 2-3 articles about their ads already.

@bmaher: I agree. But we didn't have articles about each and every ad Apple came up with. Most of these ad discussion when to forums. Or so I think.
#15.5 CalumJR on 28 Feb 2009 - 22:31
@WhoTheF -

Why does it matter? We post news on things that we think our members would find interesting.

I can't speak for the news reporters here, but I know that Microsoft paid $300 million on this new ad campaign, so maybe all of the news outlets are picking up on it to see if it's paid off - to see the public's reaction.

No other technology news websites post an article on every Apple advert, yet many of them have written articles on all of the Microsoft adverts - go figure.

I don't see a need for your comment. If you don't like the content of an article, ignore it and don't click on it.

The way I see it is that you are just posting for the sake of it, making up 'faults' with Neowin's news articles...
#15.6 excalpius on 28 Feb 2009 - 23:02
Also, Apple has had no new ads since Jobs went in for chemo. Perhaps he has to approve them personally?
#15.7 Chris-Gonzales on 01 Mar 2009 - 05:02
If it bugs you that much, then just ignore the stories. Half the stories on the main page don't interest me, but they do for others. I don't sit here and complain about them...

may be, but he has someone else in charge now, till June..
#15.8 WhoTheF on 02 Mar 2009 - 06:19
Why should I ignore something when I have a point to make? Yes, it does bother me at times and hence I thought I'd share what's on my mind. I don't see why you're so offended.
#15.9 C_Guy on 02 Mar 2009 - 15:58
Oh please. Every time Apple had a new insult it was showcased on Neowin as well. Microsoft's ads are the only ones making news at the moment. If you have an ad to share try the 'Submit to News Desk' link. It works better than complaining. Go on, give it a try.

The sad part is the CPU busy cursor that shows up when the 4 year old girl is just sending an email.
#16.1 Krome on 01 Mar 2009 - 16:59
This commercial ad has no "4 year old girl". This article is about an 8 year old boy doing things on his PC.

There is several of these ads the first was with 4 year old.

The taskbar shots are of different brightness as well. But this is very typical in shooting PCs in an advertisement. One cannot simply point a camera at the screen and expect to not get those ghost, scrolling lines. Something has to be done to counter that. But it gets the point across.

#22 C_Guy on 02 Mar 2009 - 15:59
These ads are alright... but doesn't Windows do more than Photo Gallery? So far, that's all that's been showcased.

I'm a PC and I rarely use my PC for photos.
