Yahoo readying free POP3 access?

Now that Windows Live Hotmail has joined the rest of the crew, most of major free email services available offer free POP3 access along with their webmail access. Yahoo! Mail, however, has been resistant to this change, continuing to insist that users pay a yearly fee to obtain access to their POP3 and forwarding options. This may, finally, be changing.

Users that log into the Yahoo! Mail web interface, proceed to the mail options, and attempt to view the options for POP3 will be presented with the following page:

While this is purely speculative, it could signal that Yahoo! is preparing to grant all of their Mail users access to POP3 and forwarding for free. It makes sense considering every other major player, in the current market, does the same. We'll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

I hope to god this is true! I've been using Ypops for a while to get POP3 access for Yahoo.

Yeah, I'm stuck using an extension in Thunderbird and it's always erroring out as Yahoo! makes changes.

Even though I don't use this service it is good for everyone. Although I wish instead of playing catch up they would leap from past some of the competition (namely Microsoft) and offer IMAP.

I'm not a gmail fanboi or something but if you seriously expect people to use your free service instead of microsofts or googles you should not only offer free POP3 but IMAP as well.

Didn't they say a while ago that the premium services where being discontinued for sale but current customers could continue?

i guess i'm mistaken.. but i thought yahoo had enabled imap access already?

how does one connect to yahoo on an iphone? there must be some sort of imap action going on there

I've been using free POP access with Yahoo for ages, maybe that's as I'm in the UK.
#6.1 vetbangbang023 on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:12
It's available for free in some countries and paid in others.
#6.2 Majesticmerc on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:21
I was thinking the same thing. My @yahoo.co.uk address is linked to my outlook as I speak!
#6.3 +Xerxes on 04 Mar 2009 - 23:47
Yep, it used to be free here in Australia. Then completely out of the blue they decided to charge for it, no warning at all, just one day it was free the next you had to pay for it!

Great find, Chris! I hope this does happen as it would be good for the competition.

How so? If the other major players are already offering free POP3/IMAP access, all Yahoo is doing here is playing the catch-up game.
#7.2 CalumJR on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:56
It means that Yahoo would then be caught up so they can start thinking of new ideas for features, quicker. Yahoo wouldn't have to be behind working on free POP3 whilst the others are thinking of new ideas for features. So that means we will see new features quicker than if they were behind working on POP3; meaning more competition, quicker.

Humm i have never paid for yahoo and have had free pop3 since I made my account back in early 2001.
#9 nshahzad on 04 Mar 2009 - 18:08
If they do this I'll be canceling my Yahoo Premium, unless they offer IMAP access.
Otherwise then there is no reason to pay (well, now, there is no reason to pay either, not anymore at least). I'm one of the few who prefers Yahoo's email interface over Google, plus I've got like 6/7 years of emails all stored there, I'd love to get it all off using IMAP.

I don't get this, I get pop3 on yahoo anyway and I've never paid a penny. I've had my account since 2001.

WOOOP!

YPOPs stopped working again a couple of weeks ago. Was about to change to GMail, though annoyed at the thought of changing registrations with god knows how many websites. Then saw this piece of news...

FREE POP ACCESS IS WORKING ON ALL OUR YAHOO ACCOUNTS!

That's one UK yahoo.co.uk account, one UK yahoo.com account, and one US yahoo.com account.

working a treat

Whats the incoming/outgoing POP3 settings?
#16 The XO on 05 Mar 2009 - 15:26
Well, it is about time that we see them join the rest of the club. I have tried to set this up before, however I was not going to pay for a service I get through other companies that offer it for free. What is the point to pay for a service when you can get it free elsewhere? (legal of course).
#17 Quikboy on 06 Mar 2009 - 21:28
That's one reason why I rarely use Yahoo! anymore. They're always usually behind the curve, and that company has kept going downhill.

I remember Yahoo! deleting a lot of my friends' account on Yahoo! for apparently no reason. If I didn't have their e-mail addresses, I would have lost contact with them forever.

You can find how to enable POP access, for free, here: http://picobit.wordpress.com/2009/04/10/ya...ree-pop-access/ It works for most Yahoo Mail accounts.
