Verizon asks if an iPhone would keep you from switching

If Verizon had an iPhone would it keep you from switching? That's the question Verizon wants to know. BGR spotted a cancellation survey from Verizon that may shed some new light onto the future plans.

Three questions from the survey all had the response option of an iPhone; "What is the primary reason you left?", "What is the primary reason you chose your new carrier?", "What could Verizon Wireless have offered you to keep you as a customer?"

It's the last question that Verizon asks about what they could have done to keep you as a customer. Verizon may be checking to see how many customers they are losing because of the iPhone. If they get a large response hopefully they will make an effort to bring the phone to its 80 million + subscribers.

Rumors from when the iPhone first launched suggested that Verizon turned down Apple's offer for the phone. It makes you wonder if they are now kicking themselves over that business move and may go crawling back to Apple for an iPhone of their own.

Verizon should talk with Apple to adopt the iPhone, Verizon is more reliable than AT&T.

I agree cabron, Verizon is much more reliable than AT&T's service. I had service with AT&T, I got tired of dealing with all the dropped calls that they claimed never happened. With Verizon, I get none of that. I also live in a hurricane area where I had no electricity for about two weeks, however I had cell phone service, where as my father in law had AT&T, and with no service most of the time.

I hope Verison never gets the iphone. I think verizon charges too much compared to AT&T. Also, I have had AT&T for a while now, and never had a problem, before and after i got my iPhone.

Just because you don't have a problem doesn't mean that many others don't.

There's no reason to hope Verizon doesn't get the iPhone. If AT&T's service is indeed better and/or cheaper, people will use it. Otherwise, there's no hurt in having a choice.

Last I checked though, many were unhappy with AT&T's service. Hell, a friend of mine just recently jumped to Verizon because of it.

Yea, if the iPhone got better battery life, then maybe. But I wouldnt switch or stay with a provider because of a phone. They have to have good service, pricing, and coverage as well. I will stick with a provider with crappy looking phones that work over a so so provider with a shiny iPhone.

If verizon had the iPhone, I'd get one, I am NOT switching to AT&T for it, around here they are very spotty in coverage even though they bought up CellularOne just to get coverage here
#3.1 The XO on 05 Mar 2009 - 15:07
I am with you neufuse. I would not switch either, just for a phone? AT&T is spotty, the same problem I was running into when I had their service. I will wait for the iPhone to come available at Verizon!

I am currently an iPhone user on AT&T and had AT&T long before the iPhone came out. With that said and ignoring the lack of iPhone from Verizon's line up (I am making this comment assuming Verizon would try to get the iPhone) the only two things keeping me from switching to Verizon are the fact that it is not GSM based and no roll-over minutes.

The GSM is actually a deal breaker for me as I do alot of foriegn travel and it is easy to throw a SIM from a local carrier with little effort. Roll-over is nice because most months I don't use even half of my minutes but every once in a we go over and it nice to not have to pay for that.

verizon does have world phones, my bb 8830 ( love this thing) has a sim slot that I keep a tmobile card in for when i goto europe about 5 times a year...works perfectly

Hell, I'd switch back to Verizon in the blink of an eye if Verizon got the iPhone and the subscription price was right. I hate AT&T's network with a passion and I've, of late, been thinking about getting rid of the iPhone and just using an iPod touch with some cheap cell phone on Verizon. Still not sure about that though, but I really hate AT&T.

I feel the same, seeing as though they shut down one of the towers in my area. We're down to two, and I don't even get 3G anymore. Hell I don't even get full service edge while I'm at my house. I go back and forth in and out of service now. Get decent coverage with Verizon at my house, but even after calling and complaining to 4 supervisors, I can't cancel my contract for another year and a half. ********.
#5.2 Hurmoth on 05 Mar 2009 - 21:30
My house is really weird. I have a computer desk in my bedroom and get four bars there, but bed, which is only three feet away, well, I get 1 bar and sometimes I don't even get that. While everyone else who has Verizon has full coverage there and 3G speeds. Grrr!

perhaps if Verizon dropped LG and got some good phones.
#6.1 The XO on 05 Mar 2009 - 15:11
It does seem as if LG presents quality like Motorola, it has gotten worse as time has moved on. LG is supposed to be one of the top brands, however I have had to switch my phone out three times now. I will not switch it the fourth time, I will switch the phone brand instead. I still have a Nokia 100, that phone still works better than today's phones.

Only in the US is LG a top brand.. all over the world.. its cheap and ****ty.. people don't even take notice of LG.. its more Nokia or Samsung.. To me whenever i see LG.. it reminds me of a Fridge.. i dunno why.. but it does..lol

no way i would use Verizon... they still alter their phone and force you to use their cell services. example BT and GPS.
The iPhone is Junk personally i plan one getting the Fuze, I'd love to have the X1

Verizon are crooks. They charged my $200 to cancel my service after I'd been with them for 5 years. There's nothing that would make me use one of their products or services again, and adding the iPhone hype would make it even less likely.
#8.1 The XO on 05 Mar 2009 - 15:15
Read the fine print in your contract, their must have been a reason for them to charge you that, and normally companies will charge for a disconnect fee. Many people do not realize that key components exist in the fine print. Perhaps if most people would read this area, they would realize what they are getting into.
#8.2 +trag3dy on 05 Mar 2009 - 18:48
5 years would put you right in the middle of a third 2-year contract yeah? Unless you never renewed your contract after the first time you got it. Could be why you got charged that much.
#9 andrewbares on 05 Mar 2009 - 16:02
Well I have T-Mobile and I wouldn't switch no matter what phones there are on other networks.

I would just go online and find how to hack the phone so that it could work with my network.
#10 Hitchhiker427 on 05 Mar 2009 - 16:47
I have a general strong dislike for Apple and most of its products, however, I must say that the iPhone is a fine device. I'm currently a Verizon customer, and wouldn't ever consider switching (because no other network covers my area NEARLY as well), but I would definitely consider an iPhone if it came to Verizon.
#11 +primortal on 05 Mar 2009 - 17:04
If Verizon carried the iPhone (or Palm Pre), i'd get it a heartbeat.

Interesting article on MSNBC about forcing all these carriers to carry the same phones and legalizing 'jail-breaking'. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29510498/

Wow, Verizon, get a CLUE.

If you think iPhone has anything to do with it then you are really clueless about your own company.
#12.1 +StevoFC on 05 Mar 2009 - 18:09
I canceled Verizon because I wanted an iPhone...had no problems with them except their phones all sucked. Now they have some nicer BBs but that's still about it.

Your right, they are clueless. That is why they formed the survey to get the facts. I absolutely hate Apple and ATT but I had to be realistic and admit that the iPhone really is a good product. I called my current provider to ask what the ETF would be and they said, "What, do you want an iPhone?". I said "Yes, do you get these calls often?", he said, "I take these calls all day".

I have no doubt that the iPhone it taking a chunk of biz away from all the providers.

Wasnt there a thing here recently about Apple planning on taking the iPhone away from ATT?
#13.1 dimithrak on 05 Mar 2009 - 19:32
I hope not.. and Im sure AT&T would not let that happen..

Verizon Wireless will be getting the iPhone in 2010, Probably along the next refresh timecycle. Apple has hired the CDMA Team and its basically a done deal, just waiting.

Do you have proof? last i checked Verizon did not want to comply with Apple's warranty and pricing terms, meaning Apple is the only authorized company to warranty the phones and they are the only ones to provide real support, also they set the prices for example you HAVE to get the internet plan and the 400 minute plan minimum, that is set by Apple and not by ATT. Verizon said screw it back then.

I know a few Verizon fanboys who would give their left nut for an iPhone they could use.

I wonder if it would be feasible for Verizon to switch to GSM, that would rock. I hate the fact that they are using CDMA.

I left Sprint for AT&T to get the iPhone - my girlfriend left Verizon, as did my brother and his gf.
#16.1 Stetson on 05 Mar 2009 - 20:42
Rather than switch to GSM they'll probably just adopt the next generation standard, I believe they are planning to adopt the LTE standard that should make things a bit more universal. When the technology gets around to making that transition possible is another question, but when it does some of this network incompatibility should be dropped.

I bet Verizon is kicking themselves now for turning down the iPhone originally.
#18 Tech Star on 06 Mar 2009 - 00:25
If they bring it, WITH a lower monthly price then I am all for going to Verizon.

When my Sprint contract is up I want to get the iPhone, as I am tired of my Mogul and I use my iPod Touch more than I do my Mogul.
#19 Glen on 06 Mar 2009 - 00:48
The iPhone isn't a factor for me. I've been with Verizon for 6 years now and I've enjoyed great service from them. Prior to that, I had AT&T for two years, and T-Mobile for two years. Neither service compares to the quality of phone service I've received from Verizon and I just singed for another 2 year contract and got the Motorola Krave. Gotta say, it's not an iPhone, but I'm liking it so far.
(1 reply) #20 +Martog on 06 Mar 2009 - 00:58
I've only had Verizon and been a customner for about 7 and half years now and I may have switched to AT&T if they had service around here, though glad they did not. Until Apple gets some really needed features in the iPhone, I will not give up my Storm.

My Storm has a removable battery, upgradebly 8GB Micro-SD card, GSM capability, background application support, push e-mail. The only thing compared to the iPhone that it doe snot have is the ability to sync to my iTunes library (unless it does that with a 3rd party app) and a good selection of apps (hopefully the Blackberry App store fixes that). Until the iPhone get the background app and push e-mail I doubt I will get an iPhone with Verizon.

Background app is fixed by an app from Cydia, Push email yes, you sorta do have, you just don't get notified, but that's an update that is supposed to happen sometime... hopefully anytime soon...

I got Verizon also and wouldnt switch carriers for a phone, I got 3 lines one being a bb curve 8330 w/data plan so I am happy with it. Sure IPhone would be nice but to switch carriers would cost a small fortune
#22 Bladerunner on 06 Mar 2009 - 18:53
I would never switch solely based on the phone, but I've gotta say I think offering the iPhone would do a great deal of good for Verizon... shame they can't do it til next year, AT&T has an exclusive contract with Apple which expires in '10.

No it wouldn't. I don't need an iPhone, and I'm quite fine with Verizon if they'd just get better phones. Not worse ones

what is SO bad about the iphone?
#24 chisss on 09 Mar 2009 - 16:24
There were a couple of reasons why I switched to ATT.
1.- I never had a problem 4 years ago when I had ATT (had to switch because my account got bought out by Alltel (long story) and it was easier and they gave us free phones )
2.- I then switched to Verizon and a BB Curve, i started to have problems and I went to the store, Verizon stores have an in-house tech support which turns out are useless and they told me you have to call customer service to get support... yeah... then I called and I was on hold (NO LIE) 45 minutes until I decided to hang up. Then I called again the next day I finally got through to someone and when they took my phone number they hung up on me and never called me back.
THEN i called again the next day and they told me that they don't have any phones to replace my BB Curve. Then I called again and they finally said we'll send you a new one then, you should get it in 3 days... 2 weeks later the phone came in but by then I was decided so I swithced to ATT and got tyhe iphone. Still never had a dropped call, I have service everywhere.
And after all that with verizon they still charged me a cancellation fee.. no discounts for all the trouble...
