Update: The download pages and TechNet website are now updated with the SP2 RC information

As expected, Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RC and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 RC is now available to general public for download. You can download the SP2 RC for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 below:
  • ISO for Windows Server 2008 x86/x64/ia64 and Windows Vista x86/x64
  • x86 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista x86
  • x64 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista x64
  • IA64 for Windows Server 2008 ia64

The service pack is delivered as a single release for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. There will be a single 32-bit standalone installer (302 MB to 390 MB) for both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. However, there will be two 64-bit standalone installers, including one which covers x64 architectures (508 MB to 622 MB) and one for Itanium 64-bit (384 MB to 396 MB)

Even though the download page and TechNet website still says its SP2 beta, the download file name reveals that this is indeed the SP2 RC build - 6002.16670.090130-1715_iso_update_sp_wave0-RCSP2.0_DVD.iso. This build is the same build sent out to select testers last week.

Thanks to Neowin user UAC for the heads up

Was wondering why my windows update was showing up. Was busy and hadn't payed attention to it.
#2 ajua on 04 Mar 2009 - 09:33
I'm going to try it on my laptop at home before installing it on my main desktop.

Let's hope to see the performance increase, even a little bit. I'm not in dislike of the current performance, but a little more can't hurt, can it?

Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: i found this link which offers the standalone installer for Vista only: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

When will this be officially released without having the "beta" tag?
#3.1 +trag3dy on 04 Mar 2009 - 09:36
Don't quote me on this but I thought they said it was going to be in April? That's the month I remember reading about but I have absolutely no idea if that's true or not.
#3.2 SH3K0 on 04 Mar 2009 - 14:36
Cool, thanks for that :-)

Thanks to Neowin user UAC for the heads up

Ohh... the irony

If i am right,Sp2 also includes SP1 right? That means i can install SP2 without SP1 preinstalled and straight on Vista RTM. Wait for few more months and you get Windows 7 RC and you will happiest

#4.1 devHead on 04 Mar 2009 - 09:45
No, the SP2 requires that SP1 already be installed. This is what some people were griping about awhile back, but actually it will make the download size for it somewhat smaller.
#4.2 +xiphi on 04 Mar 2009 - 09:45
SP1 is prerequisite for SP2. So, no SP2 does NOT include SP1.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd335036.aspx

Setup prerequisites

There are only two prerequisites for installing SP2:

* Your operating system, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista must have Service Pack 1 installed.

noteNote
Windows Server 2008 shipped with Service Pack 1 built in.
* Users updating through Windows Update/WSUS must install an update to the servicing stack (described in knowledge base article 955430) that handles installation and removal of software updates, language packs, and optional Windows features. This update is necessary to successfully install and uninstall the service pack; it also improves the performance and reliability of the service pack installation. This update may require a reboot and is part of the standalone update package. It will be offered as a separate package on Windows Update. Users installing SP2 in standalone format will have this update built-in

Wonderful. Who made this brilliant decision? Seeing as SP1 will not install on my computer, I guess I won't be using SP2 either.
#4.8 xendrome on 06 Mar 2009 - 20:49
Wow, lol, your using Vista without SP1?... one... I feel bad for you.

two, obviously you have some other issue with your OS.. sounds like you need to do a reload and fix it.

Why won't SP1 install?

Hardware issues? Software that is broken by SP1?

(My suspiscion is that it's likely software.)

Make sure your TV card will run in vmware. Support for hardware acceleration in VMware is somewhat shoddy.

The version number should be v286.
#7.3 Steven77 on 04 Mar 2009 - 14:09
Correct number should be 286, v113 is ancient.

Hmm 113 is what I got from the above X86 link.
#7.5 +kpo6969 on 04 Mar 2009 - 18:15
v105 = SP2 beta 1
v113 = SP2 beta 2
v275 = SP2 RC1 "escrow build"
v286 = SP2 RC1
#8 Kathryn Scheller on 04 Mar 2009 - 14:19
Before publishing this information, does anyone actually check to see if the links point to the right item? The x86 link goes to an early Beta 6.0.6002.16497 that has a signature dated October 18, 2008. Does anyone have the real links to the latest release? It's disappointing that Neowin would provide such old links, when it only takes a few minutes to verify them as out of date.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

klick download, copy paste into a new document file called run.cmd (or sp2ccp.bat or whatevar) and save it, run it and enjoy.

thats what i did.
#11 +techbeck on 04 Mar 2009 - 15:01
I will wait until the final release. It is nice seeing MS releasing these things to the public. More people test, the more issues are found and addressed.

The link for x64 has been fixed (running it now). Like with SP1, there are ISO images (for offline installation) for 32/64-bit, five-language 32/64-bit installers, and the Kitchen Sink Edition all-language 32/64-bit installers. SP1 is *required*

I cant install it because ive got korean language pack installed??
#13.1 Borimol on 04 Mar 2009 - 16:58
You can only install the Update if your system has the same language than the Update
#13.2 caguy24 on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:12
so remove it.. you clearly understand English.

#13.4 Doggis85 on 05 Mar 2009 - 23:08
Actually that's not entirely true. I have Norwegian Language pack, and all I had to do, was to install som updates, and received the RC through WinUpdate...
#13.5 Doggis85 on 05 Mar 2009 - 23:11
Here's the link you want...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en

It's supposed to support "all" 36 languages...
(1 reply) #14 caguy24 on 04 Mar 2009 - 17:16
Looks like the [< snipped > - CalumJR] OP screwed up the UAC's link. All those links are old, UAC's post links to the right one:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...=742620&hl=
1.31GB ISO, mount using daemon tools.
It gives you v286.

Haven't you guys upgraded to XP, yet?

I have read some bad reviews about SP2 slowing down machines, by which I mean computers with freshly installed Vista and SP1. Some games ran quite a bit faster but hard drive access times were worse than with SP1. I am going to hold off for a while, or at least until I have read some more reviews of the latest incarnation. My Vista sludge box is slow enough as it is, thank you.

Most likely due to the Windows Search index being rebuilt.

i can assure this: sp2 rc build makes the sun travel doubble the time around the world as opposed to gods will and now, though i like cocacola and such things, we have to die.

#21.1 ViperAFK on 05 Mar 2009 - 22:41
Yes, you MUST uninstall when rtm is out, also you are supposed to wait one hour after uninstall (because various cleanup operations are running after the uninstall)

How's that exclusuive?
#22.1 Shiranui on 06 Mar 2009 - 00:10
Exclusive even.

Good question though, I had been planning to ask it myself.

I fear though that many people will forego SP2 and stick with the 7 preview until the final release.
#22.2 CalumJR on 06 Mar 2009 - 06:37
It's exclusive because we posted it first, as with all of our 'Exclusives'.

i hope you uninstalled it, and didn't do a system restore... otherwise you're prob f*cked when you install SP1 RTM, at which point windows may break but don't blame the OS
