The iPhone 3.0 Software Preview on Tuesday was a huge hit amongst iPhone users and Apple commentators alike. Numerous features which have been high on the feature wish list since the initial launch in June 2007 were unveiled, including copy and paste, push notifications and MMS functionality.Although there was no mention of Internet tethering during the presentation, Scott Forstall (VP of iPhone Software) confirmed that the feature was present in the 3.0 developer beta, adding that Apple were "working with carriers around the world to see when they can add tethering support on their networks."
The beta has now been available to members of the iPhone Development Program for a little over 24 hours now, and already a user has managed to successfully tether their iPhone 3G to their laptop.
Tethering allows you to share your iPhone's cellular connection with your laptop, rendering it as a portable modem. Interestingly, the hidden preference panel (shown above) suggests Bluetooth tethering is also in the pipeline.
Although the option is clearly part of the Apple's plans for the iPhone, it is not clear yet which carriers have the capability of such a feature and whether or not such usage would incur additional charges.

Very much agree. Apple isnt leading anything, the 3.0 is a waste of time (c&p??? wow how old, including the tethering), nearly 85% of any smartphone released in the past yr can do the so called amazing 'iphone' features already...they were the first to make something hot, at first, but then they lacked since then. Dont invent if you arent going to stay with the competition.
Did you even read what you wrote before you hit "Submit"? First call an update that brings the iPhone more in to line with competing mobile OS platforms a "waste of time". You then suggest they shouldn't bother to invent anything if they're not going to keep up with the competition.
You and your ilk spoil it for those who would rather make rational and education criticisms of Apple.
Leading the trend? It took them 3 versions of the software to have copy/paste.

Anyway, I will never force anyone to buy an iPhone, but I sure think it's awesome

* (Ok, all apps is good) Search all applications via the new Spotlight
* (Cant this already be done??) 3.0 now has a standard system for finding other devices in the same area without using a WiFi network. Other devices can now be found via Bluetooth with no pairing required.
* (Old) Stereo Bluetooth is now supported
* (Ok) Anti-phishing now in Mobile Safari
* (Ok) Safari will also remember login credentials.
* (Ok) Parental controls extended to movies, TV shows, and application downloads.
* (Old) Turn-by-Turn GPS for the Google Maps application.
* (Old) There is a new Voice Memo application for iPhone.
* (Probably old, dont see why other apps cant do this already) There is also a new version of the media player that will automatically adjust the quality of the stream based on your connection to the network.
* (Neat but arent the first) In-App Purchasing for App Store applications, demonstrated in EA's upcoming ‘The Sims 3' game for iPhone.
* (Oooh wow, woopy. Need 3g or wifi anyway which 3g is rare for some) HDTV streaming for audio and video.
* Oh and add this 'tethering'. Not saying the G1 stock can do it (rooted it can), but...i absolutely am sure that my tilt on t-mobile could, 100%. So add that to the list of old things.
Ok, so out of the what 16 or so "innovations" 10 or so can be done already on many other phones??? Wow, great innovation. I kno the iphone lovers are going to cringe reading this but guess what...try the G1 before saying any of that cant be done already. I KNOW 10 of those I CAN do. Again, no leading here. Im glad for my opensource
Now, try to find a phone who does ALL of the above + what the original iPhone could do + ease of use + speed.
You'd go and tell me about Nokia, HTC, and the Palm Pre maybe (who have their plus and minuses compared to this OS). This isn't what I call "many other phones".
Also, you're right, if you're using tethering for 2-3 minutes, you certainly won't go past your 500MB or 1GB or whatever your limit is.
THere's no way this could be more expensive, especially "because this is an iPhone", which has nothing to do because it's not Apple who would charge you, but the operators.
