9to5 Mac has recently posted scans of an article in a Russian magazine, depicting what appears to be a MacBook mini that is coming later this year. There is an abundance of images of the supposed device, which you will find further down this article.

In terms of specifications, the MacBook mini will pull in the following:

10.4" WXGA display.
• 1280 x 768 pixel with LED backlighting.
• NVIDIA MCP79
• Intel Atom Z740 1.83GHz with 1MB L2 cache.
• 2GB DDR3-800.
• NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
• 64GB Solid State Drive.
• Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n
• 1 x USB 2.0
• 1 x Mini Display Port
• Battery Li-Ion 5100mA

Here are a couple images of the supposed device, including a comparison with the MacBook air:

The original article has been updated with a large number of other shots of the device, too many to include here, so please check it out here.

What's the general consensus of Neowin on this? Is this just what Apple needs, or are we looking at a well presented hoax? Take the news with a grain of salt, as April Fools is but days away. If this is genuine, then expect to it see store shelves with a price tag of $899.

If it was true Apple would have had their Lawyers all over 9to5 Mac, forcing them to pull the images/article.

I'm not so sure; there have been numerous times this has happened, like with the iPhone 3G and new MacBooks, in which products have been leaked and Apple have done nothing. You could call it cheap PR, perhaps :p

Apple made a statement some time ago saying they're not going to bother, letting the rumors run free

9to5 Mac has been pretty good with their predictions so far. I wouldn't rule anything out. The keyboard looks odd though, keys are too thick compared to all their other keyboards. Doesn't look thick enough to even have a USB port, but it'll probably similar to the Air's little collapsing door. If it retailed under 1000 it could sell quite nice, although a 700-800 price point would be ideal.

It's probably fake, and even if it were real, it's ugly. There was a gizmodo (or something) article on this earlier and they were calling it the "perfect" netbook. Not sure why; with no ethernet, no trackpad buttons, no audio in/out ports to be seen.. the usage of this would be quite limited as far as netbooks go.

There *is* such a thing as too simple. I suppose it wouldn't really surprise me though, since apple doesn't really seem to understand it.

Steve Jobs stated Gizmodo is his favorite gadgets info website. Apple could literally ship utter garbage and Gizmodo would call it the second coming of christ.

Why even bother when its only $100 cheaper then the macbook? Isnt the point to get into the market of smaller cheaper pc's?

This is apple we are talking about.

Cheap and apple don't ever go together.

No, the point of this would be to allow Apple owners access to yet another product line in which they could shell out inordinate amounts of cash, so that they are afforded the opportunity to look down their noses at a whole new market.
#3.3 Xero on 30 Mar 2009 - 20:08
They'll likely discontinue the plastic Macbook relatively soon. I assume its so cheap and still for sale because they made tons of them and have to clear out the stock. Once those are gone this would presumably be $400 cheaper than the cheapest Macbook.

Yeah, expensive and disposable is more like it.

this would be the first mac i'd consider buying, if true (with those specs and looks)
not an apple fan at all but i wouldn't mind having a mac 'netbook' and the purported price isn't too shabby.
#4.1 m.keeley on 31 Mar 2009 - 00:02
Yeah a bargain when practically everyone else charges half that!
#5 bmaher on 30 Mar 2009 - 19:56
I call fake - it's too close to April Fools Day. Plus, in the middle photo the power button doesn't look circle, which suggests it's a (bad) Photoshop.
#6 Mav Phoenix on 30 Mar 2009 - 19:57
Far too expensive for the Netbook market. Might as well get a low grade notebook at that point.

what happened to that touch screen that was going around??

Good question. I think we'll see stuff later on this year, what with all those products discovered in the 3.0 firmware and all.
#8 Cψbra on 30 Mar 2009 - 20:17
Photoshop jobbie.
#9 TINman on 30 Mar 2009 - 20:35
Why would the "1/~" keys be the only small (width) keys? Why wouldn't they uniformly re-size all number keys to make them match? I smell a fishy apple!
#10 Digix on 30 Mar 2009 - 20:42
oh yeah great 64GB SSD all this small package for only 2,500 screw that buy an acer aspire one or if you want osx a msi wind.
#11 m.keeley on 30 Mar 2009 - 20:50
At least one photo has definately been Photoshoped, if you look at the full size image of the 2nd photo you can see joins especially on the black hinge below the screen. However if they do bring out a netbook I wouldn't be suprised if it were in the $799-899 range they just wouldn't call it a netbook they'd call it something like a Gen 2 MacBook Air in order to justify the price.

Not... gonna... happen...

Its fake....look at the last pic, it says MAC BOOK AIR while the rest say MINI...unless they are just trying to compare the sizes...i think...either way, looks fake.

#13.1 cyberdrone2000 on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:37
They're quite clearly trying to compare sizes. The MacBook Air is there for comparison, and it's clearly different, bigger, and has a different screen.
(2 replies) #14 LaXu on 30 Mar 2009 - 21:44
The last pic is supposed to be a comparison of the Mini and Air.

While it's most likely fake, this would be something I'd definitely buy if it runs fast enough. I really could use a nice looking notebook that is both light and small, with a good keyboard and touchpad.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the desktop Atoms the only ones that support 64-bit software? Since Snow Leopard is going to be very much 64-bit I don't see Apple releasing a device that isn't.

Snow Leopard will still run on 32-bit machines.
#14.2 Magallanes on 31 Mar 2009 - 02:55
Leopard runs in weird but functional 32 & 64bits mode, and Snow leopard will increase the compatibility with 64bits. So, currently is possible to run Leopard up to 6gb and Snow Leopard up to 8gb.

#15 TonyLock on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:17
So is it faster than a MacBook Air?
(2 replies) #16 TonyLock on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:17
And how heavy is it? (KG please, not Lb)

If you can't convert lb to kg, then I suggest you take a remedial math class. A kg is 2.2 lbs, it's easy enough to figure out the conversion.

Not everyone uses that american retarded system. tough i suggest he types in google: lbs to kg and if he adds the amount in front of lbs he will get a anwer 2.

900$ for a low-ended Desktop atom system

oh please apple!
#18 +Tech Greek on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:22
I'm not buying a netbook for $900, I'll go buy a full fledged laptop thank you very much.

Too big for an Atom processor. :|
Too big to be "mini".
#19.1 cyberdrone2000 on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:39
Are you serious? The thing pictured can't be bigger than 10". Since the Air is 13", and the "MacBook Mini" looks a good two inches smaller. Last I checked, 10" was the sweet spot for netbooks, especially those with Atom processors.
#19.2 Luis Mazza on 31 Mar 2009 - 16:39
Yes, I am. That`s not about the screen size (thats fine) it`s about the extra inches of the border and the keyboard could be smaller too. Damn, it is a "mini" computer.
#20 Gersson on 30 Mar 2009 - 22:45
DDR3? WTF BS
#21 splur on 31 Mar 2009 - 00:21
that doesn't look very small... maybe name it "MacBook moderately-sized" and call it a day.
#22 saasn on 31 Mar 2009 - 01:27
I bet it won't be cheap

#23 TonyLock on 31 Mar 2009 - 03:21
They are also releasing a smaller one called Mac Tini

#24 C_Guy on 31 Mar 2009 - 15:00
Heh, once again following along after others are already leading the market. Unfortunately one of the primary features of a netbook is the low price and you can't get that with an Apple Tax.
#25 vetneufuse on 31 Mar 2009 - 15:04
uh huh... if they put one out for $899 then I'd um just pony up the extra $100 and get the bigger one... a netbook is supose to be smal and cheap... not $100 less then the normal one
#26 .Kompressor on 31 Mar 2009 - 15:12

would be cool....most likely using a ULV processor...

not bad for the couch.... I'm interested.
#27 Smethead on 31 Mar 2009 - 20:21
Why are all the images in this post upside down? Or am I dreaming?

April Fools preview?
#29 sn00pie on 01 Apr 2009 - 05:41
you know its fake when the screenshot has a black dock and adium x as a application...
