Apple readying AV cables for an upcoming HD iPhone

Apple has told Apple Authorized Resellers to begin placing their current Apple Composite AV Cable and Apple Component AV Cable on clearance, ahead of a new cable which will combine both functions alongside the launch of the upcoming iPhone (face it, it's inevitable). The aforementioned cable weren't very popular amongst consumers, due to encryption chips embedded in them, and other poor features. These two cables will be discontinued and replaced with one simple 'Apple AV Cable', which will function similar to the Xbox 360's Component AV Cable according to PhoneNews.

Why is Apple doing this? Well, this is because (and PhoneNews say they've confirmed it) Apple will make drastic changes to the upcoming iPhone and iPod touch and the way they display HD content. They will also reportedly produce at least one model of both iPhone and iPod touch that will have a higher resolution screen, which will target the upcoming Zune HD and other devices. The next models of Apple's popular touchscreen devices will be able to output full 720p and 1080i HD, whereas the current models are not capable of this (obviously).

PhoneNews also states that, "Multiple options will be given to users to get HD video onto their TV, via iPhone and iPod. First, consumers will be able to store HD shows on their devices directly. However, considering the limits of flash storage, this is a time consuming process. Enter Bonjour. Apple will also provide the ability for users to plug their iPhone into their HDTV, and gateway onto a user's Wi-Fi network, and access their entire iTunes library on their HDTV."

It's good to see HD content being further supported, and keep an eye out for more information as it surfaces.

*Senses apple people will say that microsoft stole apple's idea*

Of course it's nice to see that they're supporting HD videos. The idea to see the entire itunes library on their HDTV is pretty damn cool.

Really you PC guys have nothing better to do? Honestly the claims that all Mac Fans start the flames are freaking lame especially on this site. Grow up.

No, everyone knows cavemen invented music...
But cavemen also invented Apple, so it's pretty much like Apple invented music... yeah.

I don't see how this will allow HD playback, at least not above 480p, and that's assuming it has component cables. They just just put in a HDMI port.

Component allows for 720p, 1081i, and 1080p video. Perhaps you are confusing component and composite.

component does not allow 1080p. It allows 1080i though.

Incorrect, you can do 1080p via component, it's just that not all TVs support it. You'll find many articles out there proving this, but here's an example:

interesting although for ipod touch i'd much rather have gps so alot of apps that utilize it would work then playback on a tv which we all have dvd/blu-ray/game consoles to do...

No real surprise - this was where the next batch of portable media players were going to head so doubtful anyone copied anyone else - especially this far along in development. Good for everyone, though to me the better idea was adding an HDMI port even if it makes almost zero difference in quality to most.

More new, overpriced cables for Apple that aren't compatable with anything else on the market?

On a serious note, the question that'll make or break it's usefulness is if they support the key formats (read: Xvid, H.264 in mkv container) or not.

Huh?? What other products on the market do you expect them to be compatible with? These cables connect to the dock connector on iPods, which is where the video output lines are. Did you somehow expect the cables to work with the Zune or a Walkman or something else?

The Touch will have the higher resolution screen I'm sure. It's going to break comaptibility with alot of old apps though, unless they can upscale. But even then, the newer apps for the newer touch wont be backwards compatible with the old touch's i assume?

If Microsoft can do it with Windows Mobile and have it work right, why can't Apple?

That's the million dollar question...

Windows Mobile programs are probably written better, since they have to be written for multiple resolutions.

iPhone programs were written and intended to be on that one phone. Thus, they don't have to worry about adusting for different resoultions. So the apps probably wouldn't work on the iPhone. That's what you get apple (if it's true, lol)

So what is considered "clearance pricing"? 5 bucks off?
