According to Nielsen Online, 60 percent of Twitter users stop using it within a month, meaning that just 40 percent (on average) return after a month of signing up to it. Despite a huge increase in unique visitors within the last few months, the number of people who continue to visit the site afterwards is substantially lower than that of the competition. In comparison to the competition, Twitter has audience retention rates almost 30 percent lower than Facebook and MySpace, who have almost 70 percent retention rates at the moment. However, these figures were taken before Oprah Winfrey, a US talk show host, shone some light on Twitter recently. Prior to that, just 30 percent came back to the site after a month of using it.
Although the social networking website is currently enjoying unique visitor rates which are up 100 percent (this March), many believe that the site will struggle to survive if it cannot maintain a higher level of user loyalty.
The loyalty of Twitter's users has fluctuated considerably, compared to Facebook and MySpace, whose user loyalty levels have been fairly steady, relatively speaking. Over time, Twitter's loyalty levels have gone both up and down almost 20 percent at times, and are currently heading up to 40 percent. One important note to remember though is that the results linked to above are only based on return visits to Twitter.com, as Mashable mentions, which could exclude people who use desktop based applications to send their updates.
But what's your opinion on Twitter, Neowin? Is it a quick and easy way to inform your friends and colleges what you're doing, or is it just another over-hyped networking site, plagued by completely uninteresting status updates? Let us know!

So as with Twitter it's populated by people who only think they have anything of interest to say.
There are only so many rabid narcissists in the world.
There are only so many rabid narcissists in the world.
Lol, it is so damn true.
There are only so many rabid narcissists in the world.
No doubt.
I didn’t last to the end of the signup page
Where are you in twitter?. I am missing you.
:3
Also, I don't see why other people would find what I'm eating, which doctor I saw, or which socks I'm wearing today interesting at all, so it's not for me.
dude i'm 25 and i think twitter is a waste. why in the crap would i need followers? I'm not doing anything remotely important AT ALL. like it's been said here: if you want to know what i'm doing- call me up.
good point. *signs up*
the problem with Twitter is that leads people to believe that they are funny or witty when they are far from it. I have to remove friends from feeds in Facebook because of their twitter nonsense but I don't have the heart to tell them how ridiculous they are
I dont know whats Twitter.
either way myspace and facebook is for losers.
so who cares?
Its best use is a connective way of finding people imo. And the reason that works is because so many people have it. The reason so many people have it is because loads of people live on it soo much.
So my conclusion is thanks to everyone who wastes their time on facebook as it helps me sustain 1 place where practically anyone can find me if they want.
Twitter again I understand why "popular people" such as celebrities have it, especially people who do interesting things or are funny such as comedians. But no most people I do not care what they are doing every 10 minutes.
But I wouldn't say I was trying to convince you it was worthwhile - I thought it was reasonably unbiased, plus or minus a few words to make it a more interesting read.
But anyhow, thanks for the feedback, I'll keep an eye out for similar posts next time
Twitter is a limited version of "post on the wall" or whatever it's called on Facebook. It's just one tiny feature, and nothing else. MySpace and even moreso Facebook are full of things to do. With Twitter, you make a page and post. You can then read other peoples' posts. That's it.
It would be like saying people spend more time reading a Harry Potter book than people reading the paper in a single fortune cookie. REALLY?
Based on the response here - 60 percent seems low
I did my own checking of twitter -
Snoop Dog pushing bar-b-que stuff (some resturant or meats or something) - I am not sure this was really him...none the less - boring
So I registered as Robert Dinero or Joe Pesci (somebody from good fellas - I forget) ... here there is no validating that this person is real - so fake factor appears high
then I looked up Robin Williams or Sigorney Weaver and found some kid updating it with entries of ...
"I am hanging out with my dad this weekend - he is trying to entertain me - I wish I was home"
...or some snotty remarks
Then trying another hit on my results -I find one side of a conversation of some tennis people talking
*Picture MIRC and not seeing both dialogs... so it was boring
Social Networking garbage is my opinion
So I could see this being good for bands, businesses and the like, but not for the everyday person.
I am there but have no desire to tweet nor read them (my kids are there so like to be informed )
If you walked up to a stranger that twitters and asked them face to face what they ate for breakfast, what they saw on tv, what doctor they saw, etc.. you would get a "f*ck off, it's none of your business" response. Yet, they post this crap on twitter for the world to know.
(never been to twitter. Never will. I'm just guessing at the content based on other feedback here)
btw we all have twitter on our minds when we respond to a post like this. we want to be read.
We don't care that you are sat in a lecture. We don't care what you had for breakfast, and we care even less that you've just switched the television channel over. Get over yourselves.
Forums have a use, Facebook has a smaller but still obvious use. Twitter is just useless.
Facebook is pretty big between my mates, I was basically forced to go on there. I used to be on Myspace but stopped as everyone seemed to move over to Facebook, I must admit it's a lot better.
LIVESTRONG BRACELETS YEAH!
Just reading about it is enough to make any intelligent person know better!!
Same with myspace, facebook, etc................
Should be against the law even!!
It is not only to tell people what you're doing all day (I think that's a horrible way to use it), but it can be useful for many other things.
I'll admit that I thought the same thing at first, but after giving it a real chance, I do like it quite a bit.

You like it that's great, but it is a fad and will be gone and forgotten in no time. These things seem so much bigger now because they go global so dang fast. Someone mentioned that fads are especially a USA thing, but I see now they are human thing.
i would never twitter my self, i find it just stupid
now i'm eating a freking apple
now i will take a dump
ohh a came back and i forgot to wash my hands
ohh god how exciting is my life reeeely, any one interested ?!
