[Update] Rumor: Apple to buy Twitter?

It looks like the rumor mill is heating up again, because according to Tech Crunch, Apple may be looking into buying Twitter.

One source says, "Apple is in late stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at WWDC in June." However, we've heard nothing else so far. There were rumors that Google was also in talks to buy Twitter, however, the founders say they do not want to sell.

With Apple's WWDC coming up, it's possible we could hear something, but given that Twitter doesn't want to sell, it's more than likely the same outcome will happen with Google trying to buy Twitter.

Update: It looks like this rumor has been debunked, because according to Kara Swisher, both Twitter co-founders, Evan Williams and Biz Stone, are in New York today to attend the 2009 "Time 100″ dinner and haven't been in any serious talks with Apple at all. The only serious talks Twitter have in with is with Facebook, and that fell flat as well.

Don't buy twitter!

Anyone who buys twitter would be throwing money into a seemingly bottomless pit in a very red market... I don't see twitter being bought any time soon...at least not as a wise decision. Sure there might be a way to make twitter profitable, but not with ad prices plummeting and social networking consolidating against them.

like yahoo buying geocities...

I agree, I see no worth in Twitter.

Bottomless pit? No worth in twitter? Do you guys not watch the news? Or any media anywhere? Twitter is blowing up right now! It may not be a solid investment to make money from but it has enourmous potential for spreading your brand name. Branding is huge in marketing right now, and if they were able to aquire twitter it would further their branding potential.

Look at it this way, the Apple Mac is "known" to be relatively virus free, and just about everyone I talk to says that its better for graphics projects and it crashes less. Why? Have the people I talked to done studies to show that it is better or crashes less? Have they run tests on Macs for security? NO.

Its all about branding. If I can get you to believe that this brand, this Mac does all these things without question and without doing the research yourself, then I have successfully branded the name. Its the same with Pop Music and fast food.

twitter is growing every month, would be a poor decision to sell now, maybe in 12-18months as it will be worth alot more then im sure.

Because apple has wronged you???

Unless the devil himself or some terrible company that murders people buys it, I don't see what the big deal would be.

Social networks and the internet as a whole is becoming increasingly harder to monetize, and that includes twitter. Apple is certainly not the kind of company that is willing to overpay for something that will take a couple years to realize even the slightest gains, especially since it does not really fit into its core hardware strategy.

By all means, this rumor is just Michael Arrington being Michael Arrington. He is doing what he does best by citing an anonymous official close to the negotiations and starting a new wave of rumors every few months. If there is anyone who is looking to go all-out for twitter, it would be Google or Microsoft. But, of course, that is if the twitter founders are willing to sell to begin with.

#11 Jock Horror on 05 May 2009 - 17:52
they should buy facebook instead

Social networking such as Twitter doesn't need a coporate direction... Look at MySpace since Fox brought it, crap.
#12.1 LiquidSolstice on 05 May 2009 - 23:45
Agreed.

Not everything becomes instantly better once bought out by a corporation.

I thought the present rumor was that Google was going to buy Twitter... ah the interwebs.
#13.1 GreyWolfSC on 05 May 2009 - 19:12
Google and Apple will merge into Goople. Then together they will buy EA and Twitter and rebrand them as Tweater, the short-message game.

Get ready to play Tweater on your Goople iDS!
#14 +BeLGaRaTh on 05 May 2009 - 19:08
Maybe they will rename it i'matwit(for using this)

Most Mac users are twits anyway.
#15.1 LiquidSolstice on 05 May 2009 - 23:46
And I'm sure as a PC/Linux user (whatever you are), that you totally didn't just sound like one anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if Twitter collapses in a few years. To me, it has no visible appeal, and even worse, it has no visible business model besides advertising. The site is basically your Facebook status, and only that. I would just stick with Facebook, honestly.

Don't buy Twitter, Apple! It's a waste and will fail in due time, like many other Internet startups that made high traffic, not profits, their priority...
#16.1 RevoDS on 06 May 2009 - 00:20
You mean a startup like your beloved Facebook?
#16.2 XX55XX on 06 May 2009 - 00:27
That is true. But Facebook is a more useful tool than Twitter.
#17 m.keeley on 05 May 2009 - 22:58
Ignoring the fact that they've said they don't want to sell, they will if offered enough, I can't see how it would ever make money so why would Apple want it?
#18 Airlink on 06 May 2009 - 02:46
Wait for a better offer from Google.
#19 Quikboy on 07 May 2009 - 03:31
Honestly, why do people keep posting Apple rumors as news? You are just basically creating hype for Apple that's not even necessary.
