The iPhone Dev Team has released a video demonstrating a new unlocking method for all iPhone 3Gs. The new unlock will be able to unlock the 3G iPhone running 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband or bootloader, where in the past has prevented future unlocking of the iPhone.

The new tool, replacing the previous YellowSn0w, will be called UltraSn0w on Friday, after Apple has released the 3.0 firmware and can make last minute adjustments. UltraSn0w will both unlock and jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is what allows the device to run unsigned applications that are not distributed by Apple. This new method will work on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G running 3.0. However, this method may not work on the new unreleased iPhone 3GS, which runs the same baseband, but the team will not know until they have managed to get a hold of the new hardware on Friday.

MuscleNerd, from the iPhone Dev Team, has posted a video of the hack working on the current iPhone 3G running 3.0 to work without loading baseband or bootloader. The new method was discovered by someone by the name of Oranav, an iPhone enthusiast from outside of the Dev Team.

I love the aspect of an unlocked iPhone..but I dont like the chance of bricking the thing. How many of you have tried and bricked your phone?

Nothing more fun than bricking a $699 phone.

99.9% of the time you can just restore the phone to original firmware using itunes, no need to worry.

I've done it a few times and never had any problems. If you follow the instructions, it's pretty much impossible to brick it or even mess up. If you do, it's very simple to recover from.

i've only seen like 1 thread on the forums about someone who got it bricked. even then it was probably some idiot. it's a really really really rare rare thing to happen.

I've unlocked several iPhones and never bricked one. Providing you wait for the Dev team instructions and don't use itunes to upgrade the iPhone your fine.
#2.1 Grandaevus on 17 Jun 2009 - 16:33
They say it can upgrade also from 3.0 so it's not like you have to wait to try out 3.0 when it comes later today.

You gotta love the techies
Still not sure I'll use UltraSn0w for my iPhone since I don't need another provider, but it'll be finding it's way to my iPod touch for sure.

cool, 3.0 firmware is out in 24mins, will wait for that firmware to leak to the usual places then jailbreak it on friday with ultrasn0w.

So the only way to get iphone without a contract is to pat like $700 on eBay or w.e?

I thought an unlock was only for phones. Why does it say iPod Touch 2G? Can 2G connect to networks? No. So I'm just confused, are you saying I have to wait a couple of days for this ultrasn0w to come out to just jailbreak my iPod?
(1 reply) #8 torrentthief on 17 Jun 2009 - 17:25
yes you will need to wait for ultrasn0w for jailbreak.
#8.1 RangerLG on 17 Jun 2009 - 18:29
No, you need to wait for new QuickPwn or Pwnage Tool to jailbreak, which should be out later today. You need Ultrasn0w to unlock the phone for use with any GSM carrier. If you are currently on an official provider (AT&T in the US), then you can jailbreak your iPhone when the new tools are released.

Doesn't anyone think iPhones should come already open to the user? I mean, you paid for the phone, you should be able to use it however you want.

You pay a lower subsidized price to get it through AT&T and tie you down for two years. You can buy a factory unlocked iPhone direct from Apple for around $700 with no contract and for use with any GSM carrier.

This is screwed up, why are iPod Touch 2G owners treated like crap, it took forever for a jailbreak and the only jailbreak we got was a tethered, and then we got the real thing only when somebody was selling jailbroken 2Gs. And our jailbreak was left out of other jailbreaks so iPhone and iPod Touch 1G owners could jailbreak a 3.0 beta. This is so absurd that the 2G is left out in the cold for so long, it is 10 times better than the original and yet anything that is about the 2G also states it can't do so and so or so and so did not allow it. I want my jailbreak and I don't freaking care for a user friendly design, I want functionality not pretty looks for something I'm going to use for a couple of seconds. If they have a command-line, I want it. Not a damn wizard. I'm going to go contact somebody and see if they are nice and will offer a command-line earlier.

There is an untethered JB for for 2G Touch. Check out Redsn0w.

Your not happy, dont buy it again and maybe sell your current ipod....
#10.3 Electric Bolt on 18 Jun 2009 - 17:16
" and then we got the real thing only when somebody was selling jailbroken 2Gs." @RangerLG, I already know, I called it the real thing, and yet we only got it when another person or whoever was selling the jailbreak software and the dev team had to release the untethered jailbreak. @_kane81 stfu, don't tell me to not buy something again, maybe if your iPhone (if you have one at all) was left out in the cold, maybe you would be ****ed off. My 2G touch is the newest out there and yet it has the least support.

I have heard from elsewhere that the 2G iPod Touch will get a jailbreak without UltraSn0w, this article is wrong when it says the iPod Touch 2G supports it when it doesn't need it.

There is a misexplanation in the post.
Ultrasn0w only unlock iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 3.0 for being on any operator network.
To use Ultrasn0w you have to jailbreak your iPhone.
To do that you have to use PwnageTool or QuickPwn tools.
These tools Jailbreak all iPhone/iPod Touch except iPhone 3G[S] .
For iPhone 1st Generation, only the usual Bootneuter app is necessary to unlock ( but still jailbreak! )

The release of Ultrasn0w is for friday while PwnageTool and QuickPwn are supposed to be released soon ( after the official Apple release so perhaps today! )
