AT&T revises iPhone upgrade policy

After reporting that AT&T will charge existing customers $599 for the 16GB iPhone 3GS and $699 for the 32GB, AT&T has responded to numerous complaints with good news. Customers who are eligible for an upgrade (usually after 12-18 months and spend more than $99 a month) will only need to pay $199 (16GB) or $299 (32GB) iPhone 3GS.

Customers who are not eligible for the upgrade and wish not to wait can still upgrade their iPhone, following under AT&T's 'Early Upgrade' policy paying $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB). Customers with no commitment can purchase the iPhone 3GS for $599 (16GB) or $699 (32GB).

This policy change will be sure to encourage consumers to upgrade to the newest iPhone. Upgrade eligible customers in July, August or September 2009 can benefit from their best pricing, beginning June 18, 2009. These customers who wish to upgrade are asked to come into the AT&T store to upgrade or preorder online June 18, although AT&T may have limited supplies of the iPhone 3GS.

AT&T customers who do not know if they are eligible can check online at www.att.com/iPhone or visit any company owned retail store or call "*NEW#" (*639#) to receive a detailed text message about your upgrade eligibility.

That guy looks really scary with his head tilted and eyes wide open at that angle. I think he's been working without sleep for a while.

You shouldn't be:
AT&T's 'Early Upgrade' policy paying $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB)

YES! Just pre-ordered my new 3GS for $199 (got my 3G last August)! Wooooot! After looking at the video reviews, I'm convinced the speed is worth the upgrade.

Good, it'd be cheaper to pay the cancellation fees, than upgrading inside a contract.

While I agree that this shouldn't be the case and the fees were out of line, part of me hates to see caving to consumers who cry foul over not having the Latest and Greatest Thing while still having something Pretty Damn Nice to begin with.

Agreed. I've got a 3G, and regardless if I could get the 3GS, it'd be a waste imo. The only thing worth upgrading is for the video recording (ridiculous its only on the 3Gs), and for one feature out of the few that are new... it just isn't worth it.

If only Rogers would do something like this. I pay them 100/month and they don't want to let me upgrade. ****ers.

If you have a 3g it's stupid to upgrade now, unless the iPhone is your only camera. lol

Most people with the original iPhone will be reaching the end of their contract anyways.

I need it for Voice Control. ******* restricted it to the 3GS only. The speed boost is nice but I don't really care that much.

Here is a little tidbit... Nextworth.com is offering to pay me 189 for my like new iphone 3g 8gb...meaning I could get the newer one for 10 bucks. Anyone use Nextworth before?

Ugh, this is good for those that are eligible for an upgrade but I'd still have to pay $500 plus additional hidden rapeage fees for the 32GB version. Oh well, I can wait until January.

So if you have some phone other than the iPhone and you got your phone a year ago, you can't get the iPhone 3G S at these cheaper prices? Why on earth would they change upgrade policies (after you signed a contract) for some and not all? That's a bit shady. I'm happy 3G users can upgrade early, but screwing others who don't have an iPhone seems like someone might bring forth a class action lawsuit...

You should see the prices that TIM and Vodafone are selling the iPhone 3GS here in Italy!! 700 fookin euro odd for the 32GB and 600 for the 16GB version...and the best part of it all, is that they are not dropping the price of the Iphone 3G! it's taking the **** a tad, especially when in the states the "old" iPhone is going for $99..

Apple should really do something about these corporate thieves as they are blatantly ripping off Apple's potential customers!!

spleen vented!

Apple is the one that chose to bundle the iPhone with one cell phone company, and the notoriously worst of them. So you can ONLY blame Apple in this case, unfortunately.
