Windows 7 packaging officially revealed

Microsoft has finally confirmed that the Windows 7 box art, first leaked back in May, is in fact the genuine design and will be used when Windows 7 hits the shelves in October.

In a post over at the Windows 7 Team Blog, Brandon LeBlanc reveals that, as with the new operating system, the packaging has also been simplified since Windows Vista. Unlike the fairly complicated side opening three-step method required for the Vista box (obviously some consumers found it so confusing that Microsoft had to make a "how-to" article) the Windows 7 box will be a simple and more traditional DVD-style case. It also features less packaging materials to reduce environmental footprint.

After listening to customer feedback, the designers decided to include a "big bold Windows logo" with larger stand-out text but an overall simpler design. As we have already seen, the different editions of the operating system will have different coloured boxes to make them more distinguishable.

Once you have removed a seal on the top of the box it easily opens and inside you will find the disc and a short "Getting Started" guide. Then, if for some strange reason you'd like to dispose of your Windows 7 disc and box instead of keeping it for future use, the good news is that it is recyclable and actually weighs 37% less than the Vista box. Things are heating up for the Windows 7 release now and it seems that the momentum is really building within Microsoft as they prepare to start showing the world their final product.

When asked by Neowin if there was any news on the price for one these boxes, LeBlanc said "not yet."

I love the design but I'm still not keen on the box shape.

i don't like it. it's boring, bland, uninteresting, pick your word. Vista's was quite energic but this one lacks bang.

also, the new natural vector-ish theme has only extended to the bootscreen and wallpaper... nothing else in the OS remotely matches it.

The wallpaper does match it perfectly.

I understand the environmental problems, but I like the Vista's box case (I want It back). I am happy that they will use the common 7 Bold Logo and not that stilish "7" one.

Don't you love it how they have "64-bit" and "x64" on the same line?
#3.1 +SOOPRcow on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:13
64bit does not always mean x64. x64 is shorthand for x86-64. There are different types of 64bit instruction sets.
#3.2 iamwhoiam on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:33
Well, in the "PC" market, 64bit does equate with x64.

Yet Microsoft has Windows 64bit versions of Itanium so it has to say which 64bit platform it is for somewhere. Not for the client editions anymore but still is nice that they do say x64 instead of 64bit.

No, itz a Microsoft box. So that makes the line funny.

Has any one ever totally demolished a Office 2007 case only to realize how its actually spose to open?
#4.1 XeonBuilder on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:12
LMAO

I have seen it happen. Pretty funny and annoying at the same time..
#4.2 C.J. on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:43
LOL, that's exactly what I did with mine... seriously

I was too eager to get it open and install it, so when I took one look at it and realised it wasn't a case of just opening the case, I bashed it around and I think I tried to take some scissors to it, until I could get the DVD out

Yes, I totally destroyed one with a hammer because I got so frustrated. I just hope the case is easy to open on this one.
#4.4 busdude on 25 Jun 2009 - 06:48
I had to google how to open the box. I dont know which was sadder, me having to google how to open the box, or the fact that someone posted instructions on how to open the box. a simple indicator posted on there would have sufficed of how to open the box...
#5 thenextos on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:14
Looking at this image it looks that windows 7 has the same box look as windows Vista. I want MS to change the look of its OS Box, as windows 7 has created a new benchmark in every windows user. It must bring in seeing a "Awesome" look like packaging. Taking in mind the environmental factors, as its necessary for everyone of us.

Do you realize how hard it will be to roll this box downhill with only ONE rounded corner?

Windows seven is the evolution of Vista, throwing it down a hill is the evolution of rolling it down the hill.
#7.6 +Chipshop on 25 Jun 2009 - 08:32
Or just take the DVD out and roll that down the hill...!

You pay for the disc.
(1 reply) #9 Quikboy on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:33
The design is nice, and I'm glad they took some environmental factors in hand, but they could have gone a bit further. Do we really need a big plastic case? Will many people actually bother to recycle it?

Why not just a simple disc sleeve that will be even easier to open, takes up less space, and uses even less materials? To prevent easy shoplifting, you could still probably use these product boxes on display racks, and the customer will just bring the box to the clerk who will fish out a disc for you behind the counter. Easy as that. This could apply to DVDs, music CDs, and video games too.
#9.1 Frankenberrie on 24 Jun 2009 - 16:38
Most places keep empty MS products on the shelf or behind the counter anyways so stealing would be impossible especially if they have the alarm tag inside.

Um, no. Similar, but not the same. Like Windows 7 itself.

Someone obviously can't tell differences... that is DRASTICALLY different from vista... heck vista flipped up in a flip up cd arm.... this opens like a normal cd case

Microsoft was going to use the option at setup to 'check' the box if you wanted to 'remove' IE8...but too many people complained they couldn't find anything inside the Box.

Nooo!!

The Vista box was a great way to keep mac users away!

Doesn't MS's packaging/marketing get designed by another company? The same one that used Macs to create their I'm a PC campaign?

Cute idea, but it would have to be a mighty big 7 since you can't fit a circle(disk) in the 7 shape.

#21.1 C_Guy on 24 Jun 2009 - 20:47
Well, some people buy Windows off the shelf. Maybe Microsoft though it might be a good idea to put some effort into the packaging.

They don't give a crap what you do with it after the point of sale, they just care about making the sale.

Marketing 101.
#22 LoboVerde on 24 Jun 2009 - 21:45
I also like the design. I know everyone is trying to go "green" with less packaging. I just hope this is an indication that the price will be cheaper the previous versions, since they will be spending so much less on packaging materials. Cross our fingers!!!

U-G-L-Y you ain't got not alibi, you ugly ... hey, hey ... you ugly. M-O-M-A ... how you think you got that way ... your momma ... hey, hey ... your momma.

Seriously, unoriginal and uninspiring. Looks like a generic (or water-downed) version of the Vista packaging. In order to remove Windows 7 from the negativity that surrounded the release of Vista, they really need to make a "clean break" and come up with something original. Does not really even matter what, just something that does not remind folks of the disaster that was Vista.

MOMA? Is that seriously how it's spelt in the chant? That's pretty rubbish...
#23.2 bradsday on 25 Jun 2009 - 14:03
It's a popular chant used frequently at American high-school football games. Judging from your use of the word "rubbish," guessing you didn't get the joke.

And yeah, its spelled that way in the chant (taunt); otherwise, wouldn't exactly flow when being yelled by thousands of teenagers and their over zealous parents.

I was hoping for an inspired design.
