Apple has released a beta build 7C97d of iPhone OS 3.1 to its developers today.

Although there is no official change log yet (as this is a first beta) we have installed the update on a 3G and 3GS here in the Neowin office and it's noticeably faster moving around the OS. We are still tinkering around trying to find further changes but rumour has it this update is getting pumped out to address some battery issues that users have been complaining about over at the Apple iPhone discussion forums. Early indications show that the tethering hack we detailed earlier this month does work correctly. We will update the list below with our findings.

What's new?
  • Faster boot up
  • Tethering hack still working
  • When you hold your finger on an App to move its position, the phone physically vibrates prior to wiggling the icons.
  • Safari now has a toggle for "Fraud Protection" under its Settings pane
  • Editing a video now allows you to "save a copy" on the iPhone 3GS, rather than overwriting the original
  • Voice control on 3GS now works over Bluetooth

Wow, that was quick.

I had a feeling they would release fix for some of the 3.0 bugs prior to its release. I suppose this is just as good. Now do I install it or do I wait for a jailbreak. Hmm

Oh goody. iPod Touch users get to pay for yet another featureless firmware update. 8P
#1.3 REM2000 on 01 Jul 2009 - 09:02
iPod Touch users only have to pay for major releases i.e. 2.x.x, 3.x.x all other updates x.1.x etc are free

I can't help but think the "Neowin office" is some dude's bedroom in his mum's house.

It's Neowin b***h, people know what you think they don't know.
#4 AEDan1977 on 01 Jul 2009 - 00:33
lol thats funny. i notice there is a camera option now when sending a text message, probably for mms on my 3G S. I am going to update my 3G as well and see if it is there as well and see if it works because I don't have a MMS block on my AT&T account.

Hopefully they fix the ipod touch "Where the hell are half the items in every list" issue that I keep getting.

Seriously. If I'm browsing all of my songs, after a while, a large number of them become blue. I can't read them or select them.

There's a lot of bugs with 3.0 that, quite honestly, should have been fixed long before. Some people have upgraded and lost Wi-Fi connectivity in it's entirety and Apple doesn't know why. There's all sorts of threads on the discussion board about it. Apps seem more laggy. When I want to quit and app there's about a 5-10% chance it'll hang and I'll have to wait 5-20 seconds for it to close. That's completely unacceptable. I'm a very strong advocate of upgrading, but this upgrade is one I DO NOT recommend.

I've noticed that it takes annoyingly long to close apps now

Well this is huge the Carrier option is under Settings now, no need to hack it for tethering.
#6.1 simon360 on 01 Jul 2009 - 00:47
Was always there, wasn't it?

my carrier version shows up as AT&T 4.2 in about and can't find what your talking about KeR. I also see under Messages an option that says MMS Messaging On/Off. Also under Safari there is a option that says Fraud Warning On/Off

i want what KeR is smoking.
#7.2 simon360 on 01 Jul 2009 - 01:46
MMS option was there before iirc, but thanks for the heads up on fraud protection

Article updated.

I have never had that option, ever - and I have been a beta tester since beta1....so here you go son, some of what I have been smoking:

Found something else; editing the video is no longer a destructive procedure. You can do a 'Save As' instead of overwriting the original.

Carrier Option has always been there on my iPhone 3G 3.0.
Althou notifications is there on my phone.

The camera icon in messages bit is there too.
I'm in the UK, only thing I can think of is if your in the US then the camera icon hasn't been in the messages app as AT&T don't allow MMS yet?

Carrier doesn't show on my iPhone 3g using 3.1 beta.

do want but cant has

Doesn't seem like that much of a huge update, but all these extra speed boosts and bug fixes are certainly welcome. I can still understand that it has too many changes to be called x.x.1

I've already found a bug in version 3.

Remember the heat Apple took for delaying 2.0 (not to mention push technology)? I think they rushed to get a half-way decent 3.0 out on time then patch the outstanding issues shortly thereafter.

Wonder how this affects people who have JB?

[EDIT] Ahh, the baseband has been upgraded to 05.08.01 from 04.26.08 in OS 3.0 build 7A341.
#12.1 DomZ on 01 Jul 2009 - 08:59
Doesn't bode good for ultrasn0w
#13 Islander on 01 Jul 2009 - 08:22
Anyone checked the behaviour when getting a SMS while listening to music? Since 3.0 the music would loop for a second or two until the sound of the incoming SMS plays, then it keeps playing as it should. Kind of... annoying.
#14 IceBreakerG on 01 Jul 2009 - 13:54
Hopefully this will enable MMS on AT&T. Completely pathetic that AT&T wasn't ready to support it from the release date though. My last phone (AT&T 8525 did MMS just fine, and that was 2 weeks ago). Glad to hear about the improvements though. Maybe they'll add copy & paste to the calendar too for calendar events (not holding my breath on that one).
#15 BoneyardBrew on 01 Jul 2009 - 14:17
My iPod Touch 2G became a little glitchy the other day with text turning different colors and weird artifacts as some have mentioned earlier. That only happened once, and hopefully it never happens again.

Hopefully the improved boot time is significantly faster, as I find it very annoying having to wait so long to use the device.

The iPhone interface is getting boring to me. I think next version they should change the UI.
#16.1 PsykX on 01 Jul 2009 - 20:13
Lol... this is not really a valid argument IMO.
It's working and it's productive and it's really sleek. If they change something, it'll be just a couple of elements, nothing more.
#16.2 Jaxkesa on 01 Jul 2009 - 21:09
Yea I quite fancy a sort of 'command line' system. You could enter 'comamnds' on different 'lines' of a kind of text window. You can use a keyboard (plugged in via the dock port) to enter commands such as 'phone.exe -number 0800 123456' and 'runapp.exe -appName facebook -page 2 -view photo43'.

This could really take off..
#17 dbam987 on 01 Jul 2009 - 15:35
Now if only they can get the Bluetooth to recognize my Plantronics ear-piece so I can make Skype calls on my iPod Touch, I'll be a happy camper.

That's just the baseband, i don't rely on ultrasn0w to get coverage. I use redsn0w to get Cydia so i can make it look pretty, record video and use some decent apps.
