In perhaps an unsurprising turn of events the telecommunications giant Nokia have squashed rumours regarding their rumoured move to the Android platform.

An article published on tech informer website Engadget earlier this month, stated Nokia were looking to Android for future handsets. Quoting from the newspaper The Guardian this Monday last, the article states that according to "industry insiders" the world's largest phone manufacturer will reveal an Android-powered touch screen handset at its Nokia World event this September.

Engadget goes further by stating that:

"Though Nokia itself has never truly ruled out the possibility of working with Open Handset Alliance code, a move into Android right now...would be an admission on Nokia's part that it has failed to be a Maker of Standards, despite its overwhelming size and market position."

This was news that certainly got tongues wagging, however Nokia shortly dispelled rumours by the Guardian's 'insiders', telling Reuters:

"Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever, everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices."

And why would they run Android when they're developing Maemo. It would make no strategic or economic sense.

Theres absolutely no reason for them to release a product with android on it. In their labs I bet they have done a test with android with their hardware.

Given that symbian has now a multi year road map I can not see them ditching a 10 year old os for a "start up".

Anything is better than Symbian!

I'll try: While I quite like the way the OS handles and how its menus are laid out (but it does get a bit bogged down in places) I've found it really difficult to try and program for (as a hobbyist)- every damn application needs to be "signed" before the OS will even think about running it (and you need to manually change a setting to allow "unrecognised" signatures).

the whole thing is a bit like the whole driver signing thing on Windows (for security of course) for which a certificate will cost you hundreds of pounds (or more). But at least with Symbian there is a way to get it signed for free or self sign it.

Also, there's no command-prompt application built in (or not that I know of, after extensive googling), and they're ridiculously cagey about 3g settings for networks, so ur a bit screwed if the settings get wiped for some reason (but this is fixed by reflashing the OS, usually).

/rant

Other than that, all good! (And admittedly, I haven't tried Maemo yet either)

I dunno, Symbian is fairly robust but maybe they should un-deny this rumor. They need the buzz surrounding other OS's/handsets such as the iPhone and Android and lesser extent WinMo..I have a N82 and love it, just wish it was 3G.

Its buggy as hell though. My old N78 was always crashing.

O.o a friend of mine has N82 and it's 3G capable

Nokia N82 is 3G capable, just only on the 2100MHz band.

Yeah, mines not buggy - it's actually pretty fast, but the certain things are just more cumbersome to do. I know it's 3G capable in Europe, just not here in the states. The phone is awesome though..just not flashy and clean like newer phones. Outdated is the correct word.

I wouldn't call it outdated ...

The biggest bugbear for me is that they change where everything is located from handset to handset

I've just got an E75 and i pretty much love it for a handset there are bugs with it which should be sorted out with further firmware upgrades ...

I had one of the first devices with symbian and s60 (the 3650, which was kind of the low-end counterpart of the 7650) and over the years not much has changed. I loved being able to install apps, but everything would crash from time to time.

Not much has changed The S60 still feels very late-2002. It puzzles me that nokia didnt come up with a killer device first. And they had all the resources. And 2 years and a half later, the n97 is getting horrible reviews.

I hope that the rumored new UI for symbian kicks ass. Otherwise, the whole "not android" thing will come back to kick them in the a*s. Android needs some tuning, but it can become something great. The i phone rocks, but I dont think they will get too far with all their "limitations". All we need is the best handset maker in the world to get a proper OS with a proper UI. And right now, symbian and the S60 are not the best choice.

I'm looking forward to experiencing symbian S60 on n97 soon. However, in an ideal world, nokia would take symbian to open handset alliance and android and whatnot and just working on combining them to make a truly whopper of an OS for smartphones. In mean time though S60 on n97 looks great works great from what I've seen and running strong so no need to bail on it yet as they've said.

WinMo 6.5 would be great.
