It seems hard to believe but Apple's App Store is 1 year old today. The official launch day was July 11th but many users were able to get a leaked copy of OS 2.0 for the iPhones which got them a sneak peak around this time last year.

When the App store first launched no one was really sure how well it would work out for Apple but as time has shown it has been nothing but a massive success. While statistics are hard to come by because of Apple's secrecy, there are at least 50,000 third party applications in the App store as of June 8th 2009. That equates to about 137 new Apps a day.

There are some notable Apps that have seen their fair share of attention such as the iamrich App that sold for $1000.00 that displayed nothing more than a fancy red jewl on the screen. Also adult themed Apps are now making their way into the store after Apple introduced parental controls.

Because of Apple's success with the App Store competitors have been following suit. For example, RIM now has App World on the Blackberry platform and Microsoft is following the same path with its own store too.

Regardless if you like Apple and their products they have once again helped shape the mobile phone platform into something that everyone can benefit from. Here is to another successful year for the App Store and may it bring is hours of entertainment directly to our pockets.

Love the App Store

Happy Birthday to the "APPLE STORE."

Apple Stores (what Pam14160 referred to) are Apple's brick-and-morter retail stores located around the world. The App Store (the subject of the article) is an extension of the iTunes music store that sells applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

"Apple" could also be a misspelled form of "App". You just cared too much and had to rain on Pam14160's happy day.

I believe it was actually July 10th 2008.. but close enough

It was July 11th in fact, but the 2.0 firmware was leaked a little early by Apple, letting you access the AppStore via the application called... "AppStore".

I didn't know that until I read it on Macrumours btw

Yeah, I saw that on MacRumors and had no idea until then either

No doubt one of the major advantages to an iPhone. It's a bit like extensions in Firefox. Sure, other browsers may have them too, but nothing close to Firefox's scale. Same goes for the iPhone.

If you consider the actual usefull apps from the AppStore and then look at what Windows Mobile has, they would be pretty equal.

Plus, you can't even get another browser for the iPhone! So it's already fallen wayyy behind WinMo.

Yeh, your so right. -_- The iPhone OS is WAY behind Windows Mobile. *snorts with laughter*

Eh? if that was so, why is WinMo trying to keep up? Apple are the ones who are ahead, far as I know WinMo has nothing like the App Store. Who has the most actual apps is of little concern, it's how accessible they are! can you easily access, install and manage the apps for WinMo like you can on an iPhone with the App Store? I think not.

The App Store is a huge success for the same reason the iPhone is, it's all about accessibility and easy of use!

If the current browser sucked, yeah. But since it's really good, give me a reason to not use Safari and say "because of that, the iPhone is not good".

I give credit where it is due. Apple deserves some here. But as with iPods, it is difficult to comprehend why they have been successful. Take one of the iPhone ads.

"If you want to find a taxi... there's an app for that"
Yeah or whip out a phonebook which costs ya nothing.

"If you want to split a tab among 5, there's an app for that"
Yeah, or use elementary-level math in your head or use the calculator built into any phone. Or ask the waitress to bring separate checks.

"If you want to read a book... there's an app for that"
Yeah or whip out an actual book which requires no "app".

Maybe I'm just old. But Apple must be on to something if RIM and Microsoft are following suit.
#7.1 simon360 on 07 Jul 2009 - 15:27
I think it's just about convenience. Why whip out a phonebook, which means you have to find it, flip to the right page, and then copy out the number, when you have an app that will hook you up in seconds?

Tip calculator is simple to do in your head, sure, but some people like it. Same with books. I dunno, I agree that a lot of apps out there are stupid, but there's a market for them.
#7.2 Rudy on 07 Jul 2009 - 16:04
You'd be surprised by the amount of people who can't do basic math
#7.3 acnpt on 07 Jul 2009 - 16:07
You whip out alot of things!

"If you want to play Monopoly...there's an app for that"
Yeah or just whip out a real set of monopoly and find somebody to play it with on the train.

I love ConvertBot the most, because there's only so many conversions you can do - let's make it look really, really cool. Too bad there aren't any explosions when it converts.
#7.5 GreyWolfSC on 07 Jul 2009 - 16:38
Maybe some people would actually leave a decent tip if they use the app.
#7.6 andrewbares on 07 Jul 2009 - 18:01
Basically, what he's saying is that you can do all of those things for free, but with an iPhone, you have to pay extra money for useless things.
#7.7 DomZ on 07 Jul 2009 - 18:11
Err...There will be free apps to find taxis, etc. In fact I have an iPhone and the only apps I have paid for are games, and runkeeper pro (Similar to Nike+, but with GPS and mapping etc).

Just because Apple are marketing it with these quite silly apps, doesn't mean that's an iPhones only use

There are lots of useful apps on the iPhone that are free as well.

And if a similar app was available for Windows Mobile, and for pay, would it be useful in your view? Just curious.

If the service sucked, you don't need an app to tell you the obvious to just pay on the dot.

Unfortunately you're screwed if the restaurant decides to force a 15% tip on you.

Wanna get arrested in a restaurant? whip your knob out.

Want to "amuse" people with flatulence? We have 49,000 fart apps for you, with a 130 new ones being added each day!

One thing Apple are very good at is building infrastructures behind products. For iPods we have iTunes and the iTunes Store. For iPhones/touches we the App Store.

Apple - a newcomer to the smartphone market, has basically revolutionised the way we use a mobile phone. Before the iPhone there wasn't a decent, easy to use and easily expandable (in terms of the applications) touchscreen smartphone on the market. Why? Apple spent years developing the iTunes Store and the iPhone and it clearly shows yet they were still first to market. Why didn't the big players like Nokia, Motorola or SE get there first?

It does make you wonder why no other company comes close with something different. Everyone else seems to follow now.

Mainly because they believed in mostly regulation by way of giving people sufficient needs and features at the given time of release. Both have their ups and downs, due to nature of iphone being so restrictive and featureless when it released and having no other option originally it was equal or less to others. It still is in many ways, but each to their own in terms of beliefs really. As for revolution I wouldn't go as far as to say that. It's merely a natural evolution of mobile software life cycle.

Interesting, but looking at that recent rumour about the iPod Touch having a camera, and Apple gearing towards gaming. Is this intentional or did they think about the DSi when planning this idea?

Yes, Apple innovate a hell of a lot of things, but this camera thing in the other article may be the first time (unintentionally) that they don't innovate.

First time they don't innovate? Lol.

Err..the app store for a phone? Although there might have been some form of app store before that nobody has heard about.

Anyway, if you think Apple never innovate you are stupid. A few examples are the clickwheel, iTunes store, the aluminum design process they are now using. I believe the batteries in their new macbooks use an innovative battery design (saving space mainly) although I can't be bothered to google to find out if anybody else is/was doing it.

A lot of people with iPods would actually do away with iTunes given half the chance

Hahahahah Just saw the "WhereTo" iPhone App ad next to the article:

"Make your iPhone function like a real GPS device!"

Who would pay for that?? It SHOULD have true GPS software built in.
#9.1 DomZ on 07 Jul 2009 - 18:20
It has google maps built in, which will route you and allow you to step through the journey as you go using the GPS (I've used to while a passenger to navigate a friend). If you mean turn-by-turn and voice prompts, what phones come with this bundled for free? Nokia charge you a yearly fee for this...
#9.2 roadwarrior on 07 Jul 2009 - 18:49
There are lots of free apps that give you more information from the GPS module than you could ever imagine. I'm under the impression that andrewbares believes that ALL of the apps for the iPhone cost money.

My Palm Pre through Sprint has turn-by-turn and voice promted GPS built in for free. No fee or anything. Just comes that way. Its more a Sprint thing than a phone thing, but thought I'd suggest it if you weren't aware its available.

Yep. There has been news posted about Windows anniversaries and even Bill Gates's birthday. Don't ask me to fight with the search function, but they're there.
