Facebook has hit 250 million active users according to a post on the site's official blog, and a report by CNET.

"For us, growing to 250 million users isn't just an impressive number; it is a mark of how many personal connections all of you have made, and how far we at Facebook have to go to extend the power of connection to the billions of people around the world.", wrote Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. "Today as we celebrate our 250 millionth user, we are also continuing to develop Facebook to serve as many people in the world in the most effective way possible. This means reaching out to everyone across the world and making products that serve all of you, wherever you are--whether through Facebook Connect, new mobile products and the other things that we are building."

About a year ago, Facebook reached 100 million users. In January, it hit 150 million users. Three months ago, it hit 200 million users, and last month, Facebook was catching up to Myspace in terms of the number of unique visitors.

Facebook's growth explosion as of late has mainly been overseas thanks to foreign language versions of it's site. Facebook Connect, which lets sites use Facebook login credentials, has had a big success as well.

Nice work. I actually just cancelled my myspace account. I wasn't using it much and I figured if someone wants to find me online, they can get with the times and get on facebook

Only reason I have a Myspace and Facebook account is thats where family posts pictures. If that wasnt the case, I wouldnt have either.

I've thought about doing that to my Facebook account

But I'm old school I guess and figure you can just email me or text me to keep up with me. Odd that at 24 I'm as stubborn about this stuff as a 90 year old.

I'm 23 and the same way. I really think that these social tools are great while one is in school/college/university, however once one is out in the real world, with a life and/or family, it really becomes useless due to a smaller friend group, spending more time with the wife/kids, and so on. I've already made a vow to ditch Facebook after I graduate, but because I am planning on doing grad school, I may have to postpone that.

Facebook is far superior IMO to Myspace, stopped using my account a long time ago

Take away those with more than one account and that number is a bit smaller.

And have the really define "active" user...

I login maybe once or twice every 3 - 4 months. And that is just to deal with friend requests. I still prefer an email or a text to get my attention.

And no, I'm not 60

Incredible! I remember back in '06 when Facebook really started becoming popular. Right now, you aren't a University student without a Facebook account.

I don't know many people under the age of 50 without one.

Love Facebook. All the old gits at work have one amazingly. I love it when they say, "I can't use a computer, but I can use Facebook."

It is not that bad in the end...

I can't imagine that there are really that many truely active users. I presume by active they simply mean open accounts.

Anybody here except me is active user on facebook only to check the pictures there uploaded by his friends and family ?
#9.1 iamwhoiam on 15 Jul 2009 - 23:00
That's the only reason I have a FB account, except mine is for family.

I can understand having a facebook to keep in touch with old friends, myspace is more of the younger "kids" generation, but what im more confused about anything is who uses twitter, that also activly uses facebook and/or myspace? I find it pointless, like another "blog" to update..
#11 ozgeek on 16 Jul 2009 - 01:45
I don't use twitter but I use facebook 'cause that's where all my friends are.
#12 Firstmate on 16 Jul 2009 - 03:08
I've found facebook good for lots of things, most surprisingly, school.
I gotta say this isn't surprising. But glad to hear =)

250,000,000 who would jump ship in a second, should something better come along. And, let's face it, there is plenty of room for improvement.

wow 250M users so out of those who only use it to spam would that then leave only 50M proper users
