Google preparing to launch theme gallery for Chrome

Last week, information was spread that Google planned to implement proper theme support within their Chrome browser. Just recently, people have discovered, in the developer builds of the browser, that the company has built in the theme support already. It was unclear how they'd plan to display said themes, though many suspected the obvious choice of an online gallery; now, however, TechCrunch is reporting that this has been all but confirmed, with several themes already having been discovered.

TechCrunch states that the themes will be available at this link, which has obviously yet to go online, but you can already preview it if you have the very latest build of the Chrome browser. If you open a new window or tab, and click the 'X' button to remove previously visited sites, and eventually the theme page will show up (though again, you're unable to actually visit it properly yet). As you may be aware, Chrome has actually had theme support for a while, but this was a far from elegant solution. It involved directly replacing certain files in certain folders, and it was no fun task to get back to the original style either. It's fantastic to see that now the browser will be able to support this officially, and will help them compete against Mozilla's already well established theme community for their browser, Firefox.

The latest build of Chrome supports push skinning, so if you head over to this link, you can test a couple out. The theme.crx file is the "Camo" theme, and theme2.crx is the "Snowflake" alternative. They're very basic themes, but there's certainly fantastic potential for the future. Expect to see this develop steadily in the coming weeks, building up to the official release of the gallery.

  1. TechCrunch sucks.
  2. Themes before extensions? ... Really?
#1.1 denne on 03 Aug 2009 - 06:40
Extensions are probably a little trickier than themes.
#1.2 Jugalator on 03 Aug 2009 - 07:03
The extension support keep evolving while this is being developed.

There were some pretty big extension news just in the latest few dev channel builds, actually.

"Themes before extensions? ... Really?"

I was thinking the same thing. Give me some cool firefox extensions and then maybe we'll talk..

Version 2 of the browser is no longer in beta Hasn't been for months now. Only version 3 is in beta. They've had a 'real commitment' for quite some time now.

Only if you can commit to keeping up with the times. You're more than half a year behind...

My apologies though if you do in fact live under a rock.

Chrome still has issues that need resolved. On some sites it doesn't allow file attachments. It will appear that the file has uploaded, but it is blank. :-(

I'd rather have a browser that fits in by default than having to theme the thing. In that aspect Safari (on Mac OS X) and Internet Explorer 8 (on Windows) are doing it right in my opinion. They're the only browsers that use an interface fully native to their OS.
#5.1 Majesticmerc on 03 Aug 2009 - 12:05
Yes, but notice who makes the browser, and notice who makes the operating system!

Its much harder for multi-platform browsers, as the aim is to have it integrate into as many systems as possible, at the unfortunate cost of native interfaces. Firefox, for example, uses XUL, which it uses to draw its interface on every platform, meaning that there's one set of code to maintain, if it were to render using native controls and the like, they would have to maintain an interface for Windows, an interface for Linux, and so on, instead of just the one.

Chrome uses no more un-native elements than IE. Both of them have a custom toolbar with custom tabs. Everything else is native. If anything Firefox is the most native because it at least uses system native toolbars.

...and yet, with the Stylize extension and the all glass firefox mod, you can have this:

I'm sorry, but that looks just awful and has a ton of wasted space.

It does not look very good.

Wasted space? Where? One line for icons, one line for bookmarks, and then the tab bar. Anyway, all I am saying is that you can have the aero look easily wity firefox as well.

no one uses firefox for the aero look, or chrome, or IE. Themes are the lowest on the food chain. aside from that, too much glass you're showing.. its an eye sore!

Everywhere. So much unnecessary space taken from the site by the browser.

I think it looks ok, but the standard buttons sitting on the glass page are a little jarring. I got rid of the bookmark toolbar and went with the simple bookmark icon to the right of the address bar. Hell, with the AwesomeBar!! (I always see that with a couple of exclamation marks in my mind) I rarely even look at my bookmarks any more, I just go right to the address bar and type part of the bookmark name.

I find it amusing how everyone was all over the FF 3.7 mockups in the article last week, this theme is almost the same, and now you are all "wow, SO MUCH WASTED SPACE"
#6 Tekzel on 03 Aug 2009 - 16:44
Or. if you appreciate a clean and streamlined browser, with the "Firefox 3.7 Mockup Redux 2.5" found here on NeoWin + the "Personal Menu" extension you can have:

I wish IE8 had better (if any) theme support. Anyone know any good places to get themes for IE8?

Just get another browser, there are plenty out there now, and they all offer benefits over ie8. I really don't understand this fanboism, sure MS make some good stuff, there development tools are great, but that doesn't mean everything they do is the best.

the picture for this article on the main page says "Google preparing theme's..."
there's no apostrophe in themes.
#10.1 caius112 on 04 Aug 2009 - 08:32
Seconded... looks painfully amateurish right on the front page.
#10.2 testman on 04 Aug 2009 - 09:06
Thirded. How people fail to use apostrophes properly I don't know.
#11 liamwolf on 04 Aug 2009 - 11:36
Give me a bookmark button. I demand it. I hate that damn bookmark bar.
#12 M_Lyons10 on 04 Aug 2009 - 16:53
Well, I look forward to seeing what they do with themes. I rarely use them though. I've noticed that some of them slow the browser down (Which kinda sucks...). I would take a look though.
#13 meccs on 05 Aug 2009 - 00:00
Themes are online now! NICE!!
