Starting today, T-Mobile customers will be able to get their hands on the long-awaited HTC Touch Pro 2 smart phone.

Shipping with Windows Mobile 6.1 from Microsoft and HTC's Touch Flo 3D interface, the Touch Pro 2 is the most powerful Windows Mobile phone available from T-Mobile. The device will be upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5 later on this year, which will add many more finger-friendly features and enhance the overall user experience.

The device weighs in at 6.6 ounces, offers up to 8.5 hours of talk time and 20 days of standby time, and features a spacious 5 row QWERTY keyboard layout, 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G data connection, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, an accelerometer, along with a Micro SD memory slot.

CNET have already had the chance to review the device and have given it an "excellent" 4 star rating, however there were a few things that they didn't like. "The smart phone is heavy and bulky. Onboard memory is slow, and we would have liked an upgraded camera. It's a bit pricey", claims CNET's Bonnie Cha. T-Mobile's specifications do not list the amount of onboard RAM in the device, however CNET have been able to confirm that it comes with 288MB.

The Touch Pro 2 currently retails for $549.99 USD, however it is available for $349.99 thanks an instant discount of $200. It includes a charger, a stereo hands-free headset, USB cable, and a carrying case. You can order one online through T-Mobile's website now, or pick one up in-store.

It also seems it can only be purchased with a plan on the site. (N)

who in their right mind would avoid android for a brick running winmo6.1 ? more to the point, how can you rate a winmo6.1 device as excellent, then reel off a list of BIG issues such as weight, price, camera, speed. hmmm.. Once you could rely on these review sites for decent info....

android is coming along quite nicely, looking to get a htc hero. Can't wait to test it out.

I have a HERO and it's excellent. Reviews say otherwise though; for reasons I cannot replicate on my device, yet they'll happily review a winmo device as "excellent". o_O

The Truth: A lot of people. Just because you're not a WinMo user or fan, doesn't mean other people aren't.

I could care less about Android.

I have used a ton of Windows mobile devices, and it isn't subjective. They tend to be slow and unweildly. Until Windows Mobile 7 comes out, I'll stick with Android.

WinMo is a highly useful mobile operating system for those of us in the corporate world. It allows ease of access to many software applications without causing interoperability or compatibility issues.

If this device shows any level of performance like my HTC Tytn II I can't wait to get my hands on one, unfortunately Vodafone currently only ship this under business plans which mean you have to be registered as a business with VAT reg, over here in the UK.

I'm not giving up yet though and am still hassling them for this device. Gutted that it's only a 3.2 mega pixel cam though

The Touch Pro 2 Annihilates everything pretty much everything on the market right now

Um... I beg to differ!

You mean the Windows Mobile market right? 'Cause it's getting tough out there in the mobile market...

Android and the iPhone OS are both better than WinMO at this moment in time

Your kidding me right? Windows Mobile is far more superior then the iPhone OS and Google's Android. It's intuitive, open to everyone and has a wide variety of apps, both free and paid for. Before you harp on me about touch friendliness, sure the standard WM interface is horrible to use but that's easily fixed with 3rd party apps and is further improved in 6.5.

Besides, the phones powered by Windows Mobile are sleek and sexy compared to the Android and the iPhone depending on which phones you compare. In my opinion they all look good.
#3.5 +bob21 on 12 Aug 2009 - 12:17
I understand that apples iphone has now been programed to the point where it can make fart noises and copy text but it has a long way to go before it can stand up to Windows Mobile . As for android itll be ported just like it was to the kaiser.

Features and specs wise you cant knock the Touch Pro 2, The only downside is the complete lack of a D-Pad which is a dealbraker for me .

wow, how can you still have this opinion of WinMo. It ruled once, but it's now dead and being dressed up like some kind of corpse facelift. Under the flimsy gui it's still that crazy pointer driven single touch 90's retro PDA experience.

WinMo has a lot of catching up to do. Personally, I think they've completely missed the boat and will always be playing catchup. I used to be a die hard winmo fan, i'll never go back to be honest.

You seriously need to re-evaluate android. It's leaps and bounds ahead of WinMo. The iPhone dominates currently due to the gap that developed in the market post winmo. Apple's closed dictatorship "phone for idiots" will soon be driven out by an army of cheaper/more functional androids. The iPhone is the good looking rich kid from school that got all the girls. As soon as people grow up and want something more than looks, they go elsewhere..Winmo devices are the disfunctional kids with an identity crisis

By this sentence I think you may be misunderstanding half the point of WinMo. I'd rather have the option of fine stylus control than be forced to always use fingers, especially if I'm working on something business oriented.

Wait what? Did you just call WinMo intuitive? Are we talking about the same thing here?
#3.9 +chconline on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:27
What? iPhone OS is FAR superior to Windows Mobile... in practically all areas. I don't even like Apple, and the iPhone is literally the only Apple product I own, and for a very good reason. Jailbreak it and it is in a completely different universe.

If anyone is kidding, it must be you. Look, I like a lot of Microsoft's products, I develop in Microsoft's languages, but windows mobile, in its current form, is crap. It's not "intuitive", it's slow, and the apps available pale compared to offerings from Google Market. If there is such a "wide variety of apps", then why did Microsoft copy the model of a mobile marketplace? The iPhone defines sleek and sexy (I can't stand Apple, but still) and HTC's Hero is gorgeous. Who wants to buy a phone and immediately download a cover-all for their OS because it sucks the way it is?

for kids they might be slightly better with more useless crap on them. as far as business phones are concerned nothing beats winmo

And for Power Users

$350 subsidized price??

That is too high, that is more than the iphone, including the 32GB version.

Not sure why T-Mobile would think this thing will sell

You can get Crackberries for anywhere between $99-200. I don't think any of the BlackBerrys are over $300 on contract, subsidized

Crackberries don't have 288 MB of RAM, do they?

i have it and its an absoutely great phone, especiall the tilting screen for long train journeys... just pop it up, stick in ur HTC 300 headset (one that comes with phone is crap) and then enjoy your movies...

only gripe is one Usb port, they should have given two if they wont going to give a 3.5mm jack... Thoug another version of the phone coming out shortly does have the 3.5mm jack...
#5.1 andrewbares on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:18
Well HTC gives you the USB to 3.5 jack comverter, so that'll do for me.

Windows mobile is slow and buggy, after 5 winmob phones I've had enough and I'll get an android for my next phone.
#7.1 andrewbares on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:19
You've never used any quality WinMo phones then. Especially WinMo6.5, which is VERY finger friendly.

So it can do what the android did for 2 years?
#8.4 wakers01 on 12 Aug 2009 - 15:35
Haha, I've had an app to do that forever. I use to get price matching at Best Buy

Where'd you get that app? I want it on my WinMo phone
(1 reply) #9 Deihmos on 12 Aug 2009 - 14:19
That's one ugly phone and Windows Mobile? That's a slow and terrible OS. One good thing about it though is it isn't restrictive like the Iphone. You can install anything on it without hacking.

And it can multitask. And it has solid, complete enterprise management features. And it largely allows users to do with it what they want.

The phone above IS ugly, I have the original pro2 from HTC and IMHO it is a really beautiful phone and it works really well, they have obviously "t-mobile'ified" this one and made it look like a lump of brown turd. Seriously the original HTC version you can buy from htc is tons better

So, has anyone been able to get this in-stores? My local T-Mobile stores haven't recieved the shipments yet, they say. What a terrible launch! Shows how much T-Mobile cares about Windows Mobile.
#11.1 andrewbares on 13 Aug 2009 - 01:55
Many T-Mobile stores haven't been able to get them in, from what I've heard now.

But when you do go to buy yours, remind them that you're a loyal customer, and you might get a discount! I'm going to try that, I've been with them for 3 years. Quite loyal, I'd say.

Nice monologue
#12 M_Lyons10 on 13 Aug 2009 - 08:02
It's a nice phone, but I found it to be pricey, and the demos I played with were slower than other phones I looked at. It's a decent option though I think.
