Neowin recently reported that it looked as if the next version of OS X, dubbed Snow Leopard, would arrive to customers on August 28th. Apple today updated its online store to reflect this leaked date and it is now officially confirmed.

You can head to Apple's site right now and place an order for the new operating system for $29.00 with free shipping.

"Upgrade from Mac OS X Leopard with Snow Leopard, a simpler, more powerful, and more refined version of Mac OS X. It delivers a wide range of enhancements, next-generation technologies, out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange Server, and new accessibility features. It's the world's most advanced operating system, finely tuned from installation to shutdown"

Boo... UK store says it'll be shipped on the 28th, not that it will arrive by then...

Does snow leopard require you to have leopard installed before?

Can you do a fresh install?
#2.1 thunderclap82 on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:09
I'm 99% sure you can do a fresh install, though you may need your Leopard disc for verification.
#2.2 Matt Hardwick on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:13
I will require some kind of verification, either an in place upgrade, or the old disc for some core files.

Yeah this is the crap I hate. I spend more on windows OS's just to NOT get the upgrade version so I do not have to deal with the 'verify you have the previous version'. Especially with Vista which requires a FULLY INSTALLED XP to install the upgrade version.

It does not look like there is a 'non upgrade' version of Snow Leopard. Or Apple is calling it the 'upgrade version' and there is no form of check for a previous version.
#2.4 soulosis on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:35
theres a 'non upgrade' version which is packaged with ilife/iwork that is the only way to get the full version its also $150~ if i recall

Not true. A non-upgrade version of Snow Leopard will be available in the Mac Box Set which comes with iLife and iWork. You get the whole shebang for $170.

Nice pricing for the upgrade but $29 doesn't really = £25...

You have to take VAT - or the lack thereof in the US - into account...
#3.2 Tom W on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:08
OK so including sales tax of 11% US that's $32.19 which = £19.50.
#3.3 Jugalator on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:08
Yes. I would give my left kidney to get rid of our VAT. It's not just Apple it affects.
#3.4 Jugalator on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:11
Our VAT is at 25%. LMAO. The UK VAT is at 15%, temporary cut from 17.5%.

Where did you get 11% from, tax where I live is 6.5%...highest I had seen was 10% and that was in Chicago
#3.6 Tom W on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:18
The 11% was based on rounding up 10.25% in California (with local sales tax included).
#3.7 Jugalator on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:20
Haha, and now I checked the price here. 319 SEK, i.e. $45.

Sometimes I dislike my country, but hey, we got universal healthcare and cheap broadband!

*dutifully clicks to order* (again, this is everyday price boosts for technology in general here)

Hey, that's what I want in the United States, I love the European model system of health care for us.

Back to topic: $29 dollars is a steal man, but I will wait until 10.6.5. My system with Leopard is pretty stable and I really don't want to be bothered with bugs like any new OS.
#3.9 ricknl on 24 Aug 2009 - 13:28
Tom, for fare comprarison you cannot add tax to the US price but you have to exclude the VAT from the UK price.

UK price (excluding VAT) is $34.78 (GBP24.74*1.6), so it is at the moment $5 more expensive.

But you have to take into account that GPB USD parity flactuates, but UK prices remain the same. Even if the parity goes down to 1.3 as it did last March, UK prices won't change.

#4.1 TogaForComfort on 24 Aug 2009 - 14:34

But as Long a the OS is good then I'll live woth the box

Eek! Right click -> make alias, put the alias wherever you want. Alias is just OSX slang for shortcut -- Apple+L is the shortcut (and it's available in the file menu).

It's a user problem if they can't do a simple right click command (just as it is in windows in fact), or simply RTFM.

Is he just supposed to think about a shortcut, and it will appear? We're not that far yet...

Sucks how Snow Leopard only for Intel Macs...
#7.1 +Elliott on 24 Aug 2009 - 16:55
Yea, it does, but they had to drop PowerPC at some point. The whole 7 GB they're clearing from installations is because they get to delete all those 32-bit and 64-bit PowerPC binaries.

Not exactly. They use a new way of compressing system files and whatnot. The Universal Binary only accounts for an extremely small part of the entire application package size.

Great price for a great upgrade.

Windows 7 cost me £44 but I was lucky to get it at that price its now difficult to get it below £75 in the UK (These are obviously pre-order prices as it's not out yet). So I'm pretty happy to get Snow Leopard for £25 inc Shipping and VAT as Snow is to Leopard as 7 is to Vista. Very little new features, but nice UI tweaks and a huge push for higher stability and performance.
#11 Huy on 24 Aug 2009 - 22:31
Pre-ordered this kitty!

$39 AUD! Nice!
#12 +Ricardo Gil on 25 Aug 2009 - 00:22
Just ordered mine, EUR 29.00. The price is a shame compared to the US since the exchange rate is currently at about 1.5x between EUR and USD. Even taking taxes into account... oh well, it's done.
