Mary Jo Foley is reporting that Microsoft is planning a Windows 7 launch party on October 22 in New York City.

Microsoft has been extremely secretive about the launch details but according to Foley company officials have begun sending out invites to bloggers and the media:

"We also wanted to let you know that you will be receiving an invitation to a Microsoft event in NYC on October 22nd to celebrate the availability and launch of Windows 7. With Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer speaking and exciting new hardware from our partners, we're looking forward to sharing Windows 7 with the world."

With Steve Ballmer looking after the launch it's bound to be a good show. Stay tuned for more information.

They had a really big realease event, Times Square was filled with Vista ads and they had dancing people on walls around the logo some where... There was the Wow bus and some events around the world on launch. It was a big deal =P TV wise, no idea how often ads were shown in the US

Hmm so I guess that means that they aren't planning on opening a Microsoft store in NYC soon?

Developers, developers, developers, developers!!

No matter how had he tries to imitate Gates (tucking in the collar inside his sweater)...

Was just thinking, he's looking a lot older in that pic. I think his days of jumping round the stage shouting "Give it up for me!" are behind him.

Am I the only one who likes Steve Balmer? I find him to be quite amusing and energetic.

I think he's OK. Fun to watch for sure.

Ballmer was more fun to watch when he was poor and making those $10 commercials for Windows back in the 80's.

That wasn't a real commercial. It was a promo video shown at a sales meeting.

Cool. I wonder how big this event will be. I can't wait for the release.

Is it just me or does Steve look like he's wearing a bullet proof vest underneath that sweater? Maybe it's just me. Or maybe that egg incident really scared him...
