Among the release of the iPhone / iPod touch firmware 3.1 and the release of iTunes 9.0, Apple has announced a new iPod nano to the market, available as of today.

The new iPod nano supports a slightly larger 2.2 inch display, upgrading from 2 inches. The newest feature is the sporty camera, fixed to the back of the device. The 640x480 VGA camera mounted to the back only records video and does not double as a still camera.

The new iPod nano also comes with an integrated microphone for recording audio, found on the side of the device, also including a speaker for playback on both audio and video. The updated nano also comes with a built-in pedometer and FM radio for easily listening on the go.

Prices for the iPod nano start at $149 (8GB) and $179 (16GB).

The iPod shuffle remains the same, but offers new colours and a cheaper price tag $59 (2GB) and $99 (4GB) "Special Edition" that's made of polished stainless steel.

The iPod touch is also now offered at $199 (8GB), $299 (32GB), and $399 (64GB). The 32GB and 64GB are both new products and come with Voice Control, currently not available on the 8GB Touch, and a new set of earphones with remote and mic.

Didn't Apple say nobody wants to listen to crummy old FM only a few months back? I like that you can rewind it and pause...I mentioned the Zune needed this for ages.
The camera is a useless feature for me...the speaker is probably very tinny, but good to have.
If all this works as advertised, I will probably get it. I got the Nano 3G/4G for free and they could never replace my Zune 30 in terms of features. This just might (particularly due to FM if it is well implemented)

Apple's feeling the heat of the Zune and FINALLY started reacting to the game. But the camera, that's just a useless addition. Unless they get subscription music, they will still be far behind the Zune.

So basically, nothing much.

Just read that the 2G iPod shuffle is no longer of this world

I second that frown... The 2G Shuffle was just a superior design IMO. Much better.

Wait, so the Nano camera isn't even capable of still images, just video? Wow... A bigger fail than I thought... I loved my last gen Nano, but this iPod announcement is just very underwhelming... What a shame.

What's an even bigger fail is the 8GB iPod Touch. Steve Jobs said they didn't add a camera to the Touch because they heard about what a great gaming device it was so their goal was to get the price down so anyone could buy one to take advantage of the gaming experience.

However the 8GB touch does not have the upgraded hardware of the 32GB and 64GB players. It doesn't even come with a microphone and wired remote as the other two do.

They do not make this clear at all, and I think a lot of people will be fooled by this.

Yeah, I'm a fan of the iPod Touch, but the lack of changes on the 8GB model is disappointing.

Wait a minute. This new iPod Touch comes with a microphone?

umm what's a pedometer?
#5.1 Andrew Lyle on 10 Sep 2009 - 03:13
It counts your steps... It had the iPod + Nike sync with iTunes.. It will count your steps and track weight loss progress

Andrew, he is making a joke.

Not a very good one, mind you. It's about 1% "joke", and 99% "question".

The gloss is coming back into Apple's styling I see. I already started to like the light gradients better though. Straight glossiness seems a bit much to me.

Voice control on my current 32GB iPod Touch would have been nice, seeing as I can plug in the Apple headphones with the mic and use any voice app including the voice memos one.

Exactly, it's like ten times better than the new iPod Touch. I'm disappointed in Apple.

Except the Zune HD will be out in the USA only. iPod Touch are out everywhere (or almost).

Looks like it is time to upgrade from my iPod classic 32 gb to the new iPod Touch 32 Gb. Like the looks; was in Wal-Mart the other day and they had removed all the older ones from the iPod display to get ready for the new ones. With my birthday just about three weeks away the Touch 32 is looking pretty nice.
#9.1 Electric Jolt on 10 Sep 2009 - 12:12
You're kidding me, right? That iPod Touch is the same one. Check the specs, same battery life and everything. Same weight in grams, it has same look, I don't get it. The description says 'better performance', they listed no facts, just a neat description. Oh, yeah, a bigger size, well I don't know why people need to carry entire libraries around...

Electric,

Some people just like to have the choice. I spent about 9 months out of a year traveling around the planet, and having my music available is a nice thing. So now you know at least one reason for having your whole music library with you.

It has a faster CPU and a better graphics chip, and more mem. Aside from that, not much, which they had added in some more stuff, like GPS.

I believe the remote will be compatible with the 2g. and it's really got a mic for sure?
#11.2 Electric Jolt on 10 Sep 2009 - 12:13
Doubt it has a speaker for listening to somebody, or a sensor that turns the screen off. Still not very useful for VOIP calling.

Always check this site before you but a new Apple product:

http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/

It tells you, based on historical information, when they are due for an update.

Just so you know, Apple update ipods once a year, in september usually.

iPod nano: VGA video camera (2 of my cell phones already have this - I don't need a 3rd option unless I'm really perving out); integrated mic (see video camera); speaker playback (useful to quickly listen to songs - phone can do that); FM radio (both phones has that ability, but needs headset to function as wireless - but they can't tag and rewind); pedometer (don't really need that)

iPod touch 32gb: 32gb for $300 (double from what I paid for my 1g Touch); voice control (interesting); bluetooth A2DP (phone can do that)

Basically I want the FM radio of the nano in the body and with features of the touch since I also use my touch to go online.

I should have kept my expired debit card for situations like this.

I don't like this how Apple keeps some features unique in every iPod model. Very disappointing that the iPod Touch doesn't get a camera and the Nano's camera is useless for still pictures. Now imagine if MS sometime later updated the Zune HD with a 720p camera that shoots HD video and 5+ MP photos, (even if they have said this is the last of the line). The tables would be turned completely upon Apple.

Huh, that's why they have different models in the first place...

I am thrilled about the "pedometer". Every little girl should have an iPod. And should not listen to Aqualung.
#15 TruckWEB on 11 Sep 2009 - 11:21
So, we can expect a camera in the iPod Touch 4G.... They have to offer something big for a 2010 iPod upgrade...

And people will upgrade.... And money will flow... And Apple will be happy.
#16 LUTZIFER on 11 Sep 2009 - 21:54
I really looking forward to buying one. It's the most impressive thing in technology I've seen in ages.
I bought the 16 gig nano 4G last year, and the 3G the year before that, along with other types of iPods, but this new one is absolutely unreal. Hard to believe all that can be put into something so small.
