With Apple's media event mere hours away, there are a ton of rumors flying as to what the announcements will include. Of course, the iPod range is expected to get a revamp, as it customary with every September in the world of Apple, though it's unclear what else will happen. Regardless of what happens, the Cupertino-based company is already preparing, as Gizmodo reported, through the form of cutting current device prices.

The price drops have happened in the United States Apple Store, as you can see here, though some have noticed cuts in other regions too. We've included a run-down of the drops below:
  • 8GB iPod touch: $229 cut to $189
  • 16GB iPod touch: $299 cut to $249
  • 32GB iPod touch: $399 cut to $279
  • 8GB iPod nano: $129
  • 16GB iPod nano: $149
  • iPod classic: $249 cut to $229
This is a fairly good indicator that new iPods will, indeed, be out tomorrow, though that's an obvious one. Keep an eye out in less than 6 hours as Neowin'll have the announcements listed here on the site, if you're curious.

And they're actually offering to pay us to take those wretched Shuffles off their hands...

Shuffles are fine if you just want to listen to a single playlist in a random order, for instance if you've got a playlist of your favorite tunes and want to listen to them in the gym.

I agree...but the new generation is just terrible. That's what I was getting at.

Yeah, the last generation is terrible for sure. I have the generation before that, and love it. I realize what it's intended purpose is, and it does that well. But they dropped the ball on the last generation. I mean, nobody wants to hear me requesting a song at the library, or on the bus...

+1 . I love the refurbished iPod Shuffles with controls on the face. I really hope they don't discontinue that line or even bring forth the voice features to that line.

****, they didn't completely phase out the 2nd generation shuffles did they? ... i better go buy one.

Most striking is the 32GB iPod Touch price drop. Down almost 30%. Best Buy is going to be so ****ed off when people come in to demand price matches.
#2.1 Minimoose on 09 Sep 2009 - 15:33
Yeah, the 16GB pricing seems to be slightly silly.

8GB -> 16GB $60
16GB -> 32GB $30

#3.1 SojIrOu on 09 Sep 2009 - 12:34
that wouldn't be a wise move when the new ipods are coming out tomorrow.

if it's just a camera update, then who really cares - the nanos are currently the best all round MP3 players in the market (as far as the general consumer is concerned)

actually I would care. Now that USAA mobile has the ability to deposit checks on iphone/ipod touch, it'd be worth it. All I have to do is take a photo of the check and it deposits to my account right away...one step closer to easy from what they had before, scanning checks...

How in the world would they validate the check is not fake?

So its pretty obvious that the 32 GB touch was dropped in preparation for Zune HD?

Zune was trying to undercut the Touch price significantly and Apple responds. I love hotly contested battles.

Will probably go with the Zune myself though

I'd like to see how the Zune App store will compete. I have to admit the hardware underlying the Zune HD is pretty impressive (nvidia graphics FTW)

Pretty obvious the price cuts are in preparation for the new iPod Touches being released today. LOL that Apple is worred about any Zune product.

It is interesting that the 32GB iPod Touch is now priced *just* below the 32GB Zune HD. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not...

And it is good that you are not running Apple because it is the attitude of "competitors we need not worry about" that squash long running business successes.

what the f*! I just both an iPod touch last month...I should have waited this if only I knew this
#6.1 AnthoWin on 09 Sep 2009 - 13:17
lol just be happy with what you have or sell on ebay. any neowin poster should have a clear indication that apple annually updates their ipod line in september for the Christmas rush.

That is true. I tend to wait until release dates to make purchases, even if it is for last gen products.

They must really have been ripping people off before if they can afford to drop the prices this much and still make a profit!

That is how capitalism works: market sets the maximum price it is willing to pay.

I wish my girlfriend's birthday wasn't on the 5th. I had to buy her the current gen even though I knew the newer models were coming out 4 days later. Bah.

Should've given her an I.O.U. LOL

Anything with a battery could potentially catch fire in your pocket. I bet your odds of being killed in a car crash are higher.

Yeah, i just tried to see what my NHS Discount price will be and saw it offline. Any news on Zune HD UK release? If it's not out by Christmas i guess i'll have to go with the iPod (although i don't want to).
#11 GEIST on 09 Sep 2009 - 14:20
Not a smart move. A pile of not so bright people will buy those cheaper iPods now and demand to return them or get a price match when the new models TBA today are out. :p

So will the NEW ipods be the same price as listed above? or is this just the prices for the current ones? I doubt anyone will change them

For example my local walmart still has the Xbox 360 for $299, even after a price drop.

If you bring in a legitimate advert that shows XBox 360 at a lower price, Walmart should match the price. I believe that is their policy.
#13 Admodieus on 09 Sep 2009 - 15:28
Isn't it beautiful what a little competition can do? Without the Zune HD coming in so far below the iPod Touch, I doubt these prices would have dropped (without new hardware coming out).
#14 lordcanti86 on 09 Sep 2009 - 16:28
So Apple has created......the Zune Nano? Apparently the denizens of Cupertino are also capable of using a photocopier.
#15 Master1 on 09 Sep 2009 - 20:15
the prices posted here are wrong, its actually more expensive on the apple site, surprised no one has noticed this yet

Only a few more days for the Zune HD media player & Instant 1080p Movie Streaming for the Xbox 360 all from the new Zune Marletplace Update on Sept. 15th. Did any of the new Ipods go HD yet?
