is adding cameras to the ipods really worth all the fuss? I guess they need that PR
#1.1 SojIrOu on 09 Sep 2009 - 16:58
I was wondering the same. Besides getting the new iPod touch for more memory (64gb), there's almost no benefit besides that and the camera which I would hardly use since most people have a better phone camera.

On the other hand, if it were a 5+ MP camera with a flash and still in the small packaging of the iPod Nano, than that would be a nice feature and I'd probably get one.

But you are probably right... it is going to be a crappy camera that is hardly worthwhile.

It's a cheesy VGA camera. I am not amused.

Seriously? All they did was VGA? That's really disappointing and completely removes any benefit to getting this new version. I mean, I didn't think that it made sense to begin with, but VGA? You've gotta be kidding me...

It is a video camera, it records video at 640x480, 30fps, mpeg4. It is the same as the flip, but you get a bigger screen, more memory, etc.

Still, nothing to write home about, but the nano is named at kids, and I hope you guys aren't kids.

Was expecting more.

The Nano is for kids? Well, I really like my Nano... I don't know that that's really true...

I did see that it does video, and that's kind of neat, but so does my camera, and my camera is 10 MP (And wasn't expensive either). I just don't think it's going to garner all that much interest... Who really needs to be able to record video or take pictures with their iPod Nano?

Some people have trouble differentiating reality from rumor, and people who talk about apple, and apple. There is loads of hype built up before an apple event, but not from apple. They do the opposite, maintain silence.

Good on you. Here is a medal

The touch is not great for games, as it has only one button. But the fact is, loads of people buy it for music, and it has the bonus of an amazing browser (the best mobile browser in existence), video, and a huge library of apps, which includes lots of games. But all the game need to make adjustments for the lack of controls, usually through screen controls.

Gotta correct you. Safari Mobile is NOT the best browser in existence. It's nowhere near. You obviously haven't ever had a chance to try Skyfire (skyfire.com). That browser actually has flash! And it loads faster! Dear god, did Apple just get beat?

why does it say "no beatles, no new ipod touch" when at gizmodo I'm seeing 32gb and 64gb versions of ipod touch with OpenGL 2?

ipod touch 2G always had a higher clocked CPU than the rest of the line-up (and I mean the iphone 3G, the 1st gen ipod touch and the 1st gen iphone). Does this update bring it to 3Gs levels? meaning that there have been 3 steps in cpu clock in the iphone/ipod touch era?

iPod Touch 2g:
CPU: Arm 6 running at 533 MHz
GPU: PowerVR MBX Lite

iPhone 3G S:
CPU: Arm 7 running at 600 MHz
GPU: PowerVR SGX

I guess now the ipod touch ... "2Gs" is up there with the iphone. The former models (iphone 3G and ipod touch 1g) were clocked at 412Mhz or something

The touch doesn't haev open gl 2, it has open gl es 2, not the whole open gl api.
I imagine it would be the same for the Zune hd, since open gl es 2 is the latest open gl es version.

It does, more mem up to 64gb, faster processor, and better graphics processor. I guess they could have added a camera in there as well.

I would love to see one with gps, compass, but it would probably cannibal iphone sales, something they don't want.

Many reasons for most of us...

- Subscription music, all you can eat.
- Beautiful, elegant interface, you've gotta admit it beats the iPod
- Full TV output, not just videos
- Perfect integration with the Marketplace for artist information
- NVidia Tegra, means that video games will be taken to a whole new mobile level
- Free updates, for life
- HD Radio (Apple doesn't have that)
- Buy from FM
- Wow, what else? lol

Those are some of the many reasons.

@SirEvan: The Zune HD wont have a Replaceable/Higher Capacity Battery or Wireless N or a Camera. So I hope you dont say your getting a zund hd because then you sir are confused.

Also, How much higher capacity does the battery life have to be? You can play music literally 25 hours. Or apps music youtube etc the WHOLE day.

I have a friend with a iPod Touch 2G that he got this summer with his mac book. He's used the **** out of it the first week and the battery lasted him all day, then charge. Not that hard to charge everynight.

So you are saying it should make coffee? Be a radar detector? Be a tooth paste dispenser? By your reasoning, it should have all of these features, regardless of how pointless or useless.

You can just not use the camera. You can even get an old case, which would hide the camera, so the only way you would know would be the icon, which with itunes 9 you can probably remove as well.

The device supports emailing through WiFi though. People like to email pictures around. How nice it would be to take a picture and email it to a friend. Including something so simple on the ipod nano, yet not including it on the ipod touch is just stupid.

I'll just not use the coffee maker and radar detector as well. And since adding useless and pointless features to a device will make it weight 10 lbs and be the size of a tank... yeah, I'm happy they decided to leave in only features that will actually be used. Not just 'covered up by a case' since they wouldn't be used anyway.

Simply put... iPod Touch 3g with 64 gig and Camera = no sale no how. iPod Touch 3g with 64 gig and NO camera.... well, maybe some day, but at least not an outright 'never!'.

Well looks like I won't be buying a new iPod Touch. I was hoping they would make the new one based off the iPhone GS hardware so that way it was much quicker. Right now I am going to stick with my Gen 1 iPod Touch and buy a Zune. Ridiculous they didn't do ANYTHING to the iPod Touch. I was hoping to see a camera end up on the iPod Touch. I don't see how the Nano really needed one since it already has a small screen as it is, and the iPod Touch can make better use out of a camera than the Nano anyways.

But whatever...Apple lost my one and only business with them. Make me pay $30 in additional fees to keep my firmware up to date is appauling. Why not just brick my iPod every 4 months and make me a buy a new one. Apple is power and money hungry and by charging for firmware updates to existing customers yet new customers get it free with their new iPods is a great way to **** off your current customers.
#39.1 andrewbares on 10 Sep 2009 - 04:29

It's sort of weird that their iPods come in all the colors their eMac line used to come in. I guess the color of the gadget casing works is more of a selling point for portable media devices than for desktop computers.

That speaker on the Nano is going to be a public annoyance. We have enough kids running around thinking their phones are boomboxes, without the added "benefits" of having to sit in public places listening to someone blast their iPod playlist through the tinny speakers. Besides, given the quality of the default white earphones with their associated sound leak, speakers are really unnecessary.

was planning on buying a gift for a friend. It would be either ipod touch or zune hd. I think I will be buying a zune hd. Been playing around with the zune software and I really like it. It has an elegant design :-) I just hope that MS will have a decent app service along with movie offerings.
