Microsoft unveils its thinnest Bluetooth-powered Keyboard

Microsoft announced today its thinnest keyboard dubbed "Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000", which if you didn't notice in the name is designed exclusively for Bluetooth enabled PC's. The keyboard itself is just a few millimeters thicker than an AAA battery, with Microsoft's Comfort Curve design for a more natural wrist posture when typing.

Check it out:

"The design tenets of compact, clean and refined really set the stage for the success of the keyboard," said Chris Kujawski, industrial designer for Microsoft Hardware. "There is nothing extraneous about the design. We removed everything that didn't fit with those ideas and ended up with something we're really proud of — a compact, sophisticated keyboard that pairs perfectly with Bluetooth computers."

According to Microsoft's press release, one of the top consumer complaints when using a notebook or a netbook is the lack of a number pad. So Microsoft has shipped a stand-alone Bluetooth powered number pad as well as a carrying case with the Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000.

The keyboard will be available in October of this year with an estimated retail price of $89.96 for both the keyboard and number pad, and $44.95 for the number pad itself. Both are backed by a worldwide three year limited hardware warranty from Microsoft.

I must say Microsoft may not have the best software for PC, but they have the best hardware for PC. I love Microsoft hardware.

Agreed. I don't like most of their keyboards, although this one looks *very* nice. I use a Microsoft mouse on my MacBook, because they make the best mice for Macs (ironic, really).

Yeah, I think you tried to pull one over on us. Microsoft makes great software. As a teacher, I can't get enough of Microsoft Student or Encarta. I've used Streets and Trips up until recently, and I use Money as well. Windows 7 too.

I would have to disagree with you on that, I've always chosen Logitech's kb/mice over Microsoft's. I however, like their software.

I never said Microsoft didn't make great software. I said that their software may not be the best. The keyword here is "may." Besides, when I talk about Microsoft software, I'm talking about a wide range of software not just Encarta or OS like Windows 7. By the way, I'm a BIG fan of Microsoft Windows. But, you have to face the fact that "you can be good at something but can't be good at everything."

I came here to say the same thing. Microsoft is a huge mixed bag, some great hardware and software, some really bad stuff as well. A lot of people will accept anything that Microsoft gives them, whether it is good or bad. They are called fanboys, and will vehemently disagree at anything said against them. There are some of us here that use them when they produce something, but don't bury our heads in the sand to other companies also producing great stuff.

Now most of the people replying to your comment, which camp do they sit in?

As he said, they really don't make good software... And some of the hardware is ok.... Apples keyboard is thinner, but I don't mind the look of this one.

Accounting Express/Pro 2008 or 2009 - will continue that line with more features and better importing/exporting for the more popular Quickbooks and other accounting software. The Express version is free and previous upgrades are free. I use this software over QB2009 and like it more and I am very familiar with QBooks.

love the design... hate the price $90 for a keyboard is a bit much.
#4 Solid Knight on 09 Sep 2009 - 18:54
It certainly looks nice albeit it's not so great for those who frequently use the home and end keys. It'd certainly look good in a media center setting and not having a dongle is a plus as well. I'm curious as to the battery life of this keyboard(s). I'm unsure as to whether or not this will increase Linux adoption though.
#5 Darrian on 09 Sep 2009 - 18:58
OMG that's sexy. I'm gonna have to get one and see how it handles. It might just replace my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

Agree with you 100%. This is going in the living room next to the Laser Mouse 8000 - Another great piece of hardware by Microsoft. My favourite BT mouse.
#6.2 dtomilson on 09 Sep 2009 - 23:53
I am replacing an Apple BT keyboard. That function key really blows it in FPS shooters where you use the CTRL key..

Cool but they should feature build in number pad as well.
#7.1 ccoltmanm on 09 Sep 2009 - 19:27
I like the idea of having it seperate. If i am at home, i can have it on the side like a calculator. Looks cool and isn't in the way when i don't need it.

qdave said,

Well MS should have made it so the number pad could attach to the keyboard, as in some kind of quick connect/disconnect type thing.
#8 MentalDisturb. on 09 Sep 2009 - 19:13
I'll probably get the number pad when it gets out; might be a little on the expensive side, but then again it's wireless and sexy!

How can you say the Apple keyboard is nicer to type on when this hasn't even been released yet?

ZakO said,

The keys seen in the picture look very similar to many other keyboards that are out today. So that could be an indication. Next to that people might not like the curving.
#12.5 dtomilson on 09 Sep 2009 - 23:55
What are you smoking? I will be replacing the Apple BT keyboard with this one!
The Apple one has a lot of issues and you must find workarounds for it to be paired onto multiple operating systems and won't pair with the PS3 properly.

Another gripe is the function key in the left corner. FPS and typing in general can be thrown off by this. The price is fine and I will be picking one up asap!

ishtar said,

Well, yes, maybe they are. But what if Apples keyboards are overpriced, and this one is more expensive, then what does that make this keyboard?? Over-overpriced.

Looks nice though, haven't used a curved design before, anyone have any experience?
#12.7 GP007 on 10 Sep 2009 - 06:40
Once I started using curved designed KB's I now hate the normal ones. I'd take a curved/natural design over a normal one anyday, regardless. It just feels way better.

cakesy said,

Before I switched to Mac I had a curved Microsoft keyboard that worked brilliantly. IMO Microsoft makes some pretty good quality keyboards. But then again I also think that it's completely nonsense to claim that Apple keyboards a crappy and overpriced. When it comes to quality both companies make equally good keyboards. The only difference I prefer about the ones Apple makes is the aluminum design vs plastic.

dtomilson said,

Obviously the Apple Keyboards are designed to work with Mac OS X and provide perfect integration with that operating system. That said I've been using both the wired and wireless keyboards with Windows for a while now and they work just fine after installing the proper Boot Camp drivers.
#13 MistaT40 on 09 Sep 2009 - 20:32

#15 C_Guy on 09 Sep 2009 - 20:56
Microsoft makes excellent hardware. I still have their Digital Sound System 80 hooked up. It's not the best by today's standards but it still sounds great!

I've also got their blue backlit keyboard and mouse they made together with Razer. They look and feel awesome.

Still waiting for someone to re-release a force feedback mouse. Logitech made a great one, not sure why they let the concept die.

I really like this! I'm guessing it doesnt come with a bluetooth dongle...
#16.1 +Lewism on 09 Sep 2009 - 21:11
Yeah, that's what I understood from the press release. How much will they sell a BT dongle if you don't have it?
#16.2 dtomilson on 10 Sep 2009 - 00:02
Too bad.. I wonder why if they won't include it with the keyboard if they are including it with the mouse?

Probably because most people who would buy this, buy the better laptops, which come with bluetooth. Not the cheapeast dell and hp's.

You can get a bluetooth transmitter from ebay for about $3 if you really want one.

Umm i don't think so I have their 8000 model and had it for a few years already and nothing has worn on it yet
#17.2 ahhell on 09 Sep 2009 - 22:06
Same goes with the 7000 series. I've been gaming the crap out of it and nothing is worn (ASDF is pretty shinny though haha).
They have kickass range too.

Same for a 6000 here, 2 years use with heavy gaming and no sign of fade.

#18 Davo on 09 Sep 2009 - 21:12
I have to agree that MS makes top notch hardware. I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse back when they were all the rage and it's still working some 8 years later. This looks fresh too.

probably no backlighting, right? otherwise it look great

I personally love this logitech keyboard; excellent key-travel; great texture; thin; backlight; wired ... http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboard...40&cl=us,en
#19.1 +Lewism on 09 Sep 2009 - 23:01
It comes down to whether you want bluetooth (wireless) or backlight (wired).
#19.2 GP007 on 10 Sep 2009 - 06:44
Shouldn't everyone buying something like this at this price tag already know very well (without looking) where each button is? If so, why do you need a backlight unless you find yourself working in apps that have more mouse work (photoshop?) and thus you're left with only one hand. But even then, I've used non-lighted KB's in the dark, and all you really need is the light from the monitor and it's enough imo.

its freakishly heavy aswell
though it does seem like itd be a mission to break.

#24 Soldiers33 on 10 Sep 2009 - 08:50
thats so nice, but why on earth does microsoft always have to make curved keyboards?
#25 timljohns on 10 Sep 2009 - 10:04
Sweet, now just make it work with my iPhone and I'll be happy.
#26 mrmomoman on 10 Sep 2009 - 12:34
Its not overly curved and its more natural. Believe me I hated all curved at first and I still to this day cannot stand the curve with the split sets of keys. UGH. This is a nice design and works well for the natural bend in your arms/wrists.

For the PS3 you should go with a Logitech diNovo Mini. This is what I am using for my HTPC.
#31 Rohdekill on 10 Sep 2009 - 22:09
If it requires a battery I'll never buy one. I have never found a need to take my keyboard further than it's cable length or the length of an added extension.

My mom has a cordless keyboard. All I hear her complain about is how fast she goes through batteries.
(2 replies) #32 mixpix on 11 Sep 2009 - 02:15
It's a great looking piece of hardware. I really like it because of the removable numpad.

HOWEVER, I wont be buying it because it's Bluetooth. Unless this device is somehow different than most, it wont let you boot into the BIOS because the keyboard won't work that early in the boot sequence. If they make a normal wireless version then I'd think about getting it.

I've been using wireless keyboards for years (diNovo Edge and MX5500 Revolution) and they work pretty much on the standard USB interface. I've never had a problem with my keyboards in any situation, including the BIOS entrance as you've mentioned.
