AT&T's MMS service live for some iPhone customers

When Apple announced the third version of their iPhone OS earlier this year, there was much excitement; unfortunately though, some of this excitement turned into disappointment. Yes, some handy new features were added, but also some that people believe should have been there from the beginning… MMS being one of those. To add to the frustration from American users, Apple stated that MMS for the U.S. would be delayed due to issues on AT&T's end. Fortunately, that period of MMS drought is quickly coming to an end, and has already done so, according to a post at TUAW.

The author of the article, Michael Jones, apparently has had MMS enabled on his iPhone for an unknown period of time, only having discovered it once a friend sent a message to his phone. What's strange about this is that the service isn't meant to go live until September 25, meaning that it's being on for some almost 2 weeks early. Even stranger is that TUAW has been getting tips from people stating that their service has been working from over a month ago, so AT&T are certainly showing that they want to get this working correctly to please customers.

If you're on AT&T and in the U.S., give MMS a shot now and see how you go. You might need to play around with carrier settings, but never-the-less, it might work. Also, be sure you're running the latest iPhone OS, 3.1, as most people are finding luck with that (it includes the latest carrier settings).

I'm assuming you mean you can only receive them, right?
I'm running FW 3.1 with carrier file 5.0and I don't see a way to send an MMS.

but I haven't tried receiving yet - about to have a co-worker test it for, so I'll report back in 2min

From what I have read, AT&T has been pushing carrier updates to users in certain markets, based upon tower saturation. Many of the major metro areas such as NYC, Boston, Philadelphia and the likes have been experiencing Tower saturation on the 1900MHz band, which serves 3G. In order to provide better quality service to all and avoid major connection problems in those areas, AT&T has limited MMS capabilities until they could deploy 3G on their 800MHz band. Users in areas with low 3G tower saturation may already have received the carrier update while others in the major metro areas may not see MMS support until around Sept. 25, which is when AT&T plans to have the 800MHz upgrade complete.

I think MMS in general should die.

I just want plain text and I only want people able to send me plain text. None of this stupid forward animated image crap.

What's wrong with providing the option? If you don't like it, don't use it.

Put a MMS block on your line. God knows AT&T can do it....O_o, lol. Otherwise just tell the people not to send you that stuff.

Doesn't seem to be working on my iPhone yet. How do I check it? Is it under the messenger app? When I goto photos, I don't see any options to send the photo via mms or text message or anything of the sort.

After selecting a photo, click the bottom left icon. The options are ...

Email Photo
MMS
Assign to contact
Use as wallpaper

If MMS ain't listed, you don't have it

It's sad they are only getting MMS for iphone now. You would think it would have been there from day one.
