Linux creator Linus Torvalds gives Windows 7 a thumbs up

Linus Torvalds, the father of the Linux Kernel gave Windows 7 the thumbs up in Japan yesterday.

Torvalds was in town for the Japan Linux Symposium exhibition and Microsoft reportedly setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center. During a conference break an attendee dragged Torvalds across the street to "make fun of Microsoft".

The result? A somewhat sarcastic thumbs up from Linus Torvalds, it's a picture that will certainly go down in history though. Thanks to Steven Bink (bink.nu) for spotting this:

To All Those Comments Below That Say The Pic Was Sarcastic:

1. No he wasn't. His smile looks genuine, it's Not a smirk.

2. If you thought that smile is that sarcastic, you are most likely POOR in detecting body language properly.

3. Or you are just in denial.

4. There is no "/s"

5. In truth: Deep inside, Linus wants to join the Windows 8 & 9 Kernel Team. /s

Have you ever seen or watched Linus Torvalds in person give a speech? He's seriously arrogant, and unprofessional with his quips.

Some banter is healthy, maybe even cool, but Linus acts like a pre-teen most times; however, Linux is awesome, so maybe he deserves a little latitude...

From the general reading I have done on the net, he sounds like he thinks Linux is *so* awesome that he'd pour syrup over it and make sweet love to it LOL. It's not *that* awesome. (And yes, I do run some Linux servers)

It's in a way good that he thinks that though. He needs to feel strongly for his project, for it to be as good as possible.

Um...Windows is the #1 OS in the world...I don't really see how it could get further along, especially considering Europe pretty much has a vendetta against MS and anything they make.

Now if everyone were reasonable and respected others choices and opinions, we wouldn't see so much of the internet wasted on stupid "my OS is better than your OS" rants. Mac, *nix, Win... who gives a ****. Do what you want, how you want, with what you want... just keep it legal.

a LOT of Unix users simply complain becuse Windows has a price tag associated with it. If they could get Windows for FREE then all the hoopla and bickering would be almost non-existant. Bottom line; about 90% just feel that paying for anything is not reasonable, so the complain and bicker about it.
#6.5 GP007 on 23 Oct 2009 - 16:53
If something is worth it, I'll pay. I don't see why or how everything being free would somehow make things oh so great. How are the devs going to get paid? Firefox, as an example, got to where it is because they get money from Google for one, and other places as well. But it's because they get money, is the point.

Suppose it would have been useful/better if the title had reflected more obviously the intention that Linus had in doing this.

so, no sarcasm from Mr. Torvalds.

You sure he`s not just trying to hitch a ride and just happens to be kneeling down next to a windows 7 outlet?
#15 daPhoenix on 23 Oct 2009 - 15:30
As I posted in the forums I think Linus is simply happy with doing his thing and Microsoft doing theirs - I doubt there's any ill will in his thumbs up. If you've read his past comments he's tried to emphasize the good things of his own "thing" rather than just blame everything on Microsoft.

Or maybe he has issues with some of the changes with GPL 3? It doesn't make sense why he's been okay with it being on GPL 2 all this time...

Whoa! Complicated!

He has a point though, almost always when Linux is posted on the front page it's either shown to have either some flaw or in a negative light, same mainly goes for Apple.

Microsoft releases 50 patches it's only because they're "protecting you!", if Linux or Mac does the same "They're awful buggy systems!".

Of course none of the admins here admit the bias and we're all just imagining this stuff. Strange how many people seem to 'imagine' the same thing.

That's more of a secondary goal, which is completely expected because this is Neowin.
The main goal here is actually to get (proper) Linux news in the damned Linux section (front page material or not).

He's in such a position, that people will get everything good he said about 7 as a little sarcastic, so yes, I think he's being perfectly sarcastic :-)). I love the picture and the story behind it, I'm gonna keep look at this picture for a long time. Sorta history in the making kind of thing ;-)
