Google has announced today the new Android 2.0 platform.

Android 2.0 brings new developer APIs for sync, Bluetooth, and some other areas. Developers can now write applications to enable users to sync their devices to various contact sources. With the new Bluetooth API, developers can easily add peer-to-peer connectivity or gaming to their applications.

Google has published a full list of improvements but amongst the improvements here are the best ones we have found:
  • Email - Exchange support
  • Messaging - Search support
  • Camera - Built-in flash support, Digital zoom
  • Keyboard - Improved virtual keyboard to help with correct characters and typing speed
  • Browser - HTML5 support, double tap zoom, tap the address bar for instant searches and navigation
  • Bluetooth 2.1 support, Object Push Profile (OPP) and Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP) support
With the amount of operating system additions and improved support for multiple screen sizes and Bluetooth 2.1, we'd expect to see a whole range of new Android devices ready for when 2.0 is ready.

The Samsung Moment is coming to Sprint on November 1st. Finally a decent phone with a full QWERTY Keyboard to get me off my old Nextel clunker!

I agree and I really would like to try out an Android phone but so far all of them are so much less responsive than my Pre it's not even funny. Don't forget Palm has a great QWERTY Linux-based phone out already with tons of official and homebrew apps and a decidedly hands-off approach to patching and hacking. The only thing that will come close in processing power is the upcoming Moto Droid and HTC Dragon/Passion.

I'm hoping that by next summer Sprint will have released their rumored 4G Android phone and I con consider upgrading from my Pre. Until then, there just aren't any phones with that kind of power on networks that don't rape you for service costs.

As of right now (and the way things are looking for the future) I don't think a 4G standard will be finalized by next summer.

That's fine. They have Wimax in my city and a growing number of others. I use it for my home internet service so it would be nice to have it on my mobile.

I thought I was the only person on the planet with a Xenon LOL. Mostly cause no one else I've come across has one, for some insane reason. It's really a nice phone. I love it.

Liked the multiscreen demo, imagine that you share a video with 50% of the width in both devices screens ???

Not bad, the interface looks polished, should be a great improvement over Android 1.0

Are you still using 1.0? why? 1.5 and 1.6 have been available for a while.

I prefer the default. The Sense UI looked nice, but I only used it for a while before returning to 1.6 because HTC replacement apps are inferior to Android's built in apps. The keyboard looks nicer but is a lot slower and more laggy than the default one, the phone app doesn't show what time missed calls came in at and scrolls super slow, the contacts app doesn't let you filter gmail groups and also scrolls really slow.

Then you run into the problem of needing to wait for HTC to update sense when a new android build is released, meaning sense users are typically far behind.

Droid comes out next Friday, so I'll be ditching my iPhone! Yay!

Really? I've been using my G1 since it came out. The newest 1.6 update has been a horror for me. So many things decided to stop working, and the phone seems so much slower...yes slower, wtf? Even in 1.5 and now 1.6 when I click something I expect it to open right away...nope takes like 10-45 seconds for anything to even happen. Not to mention my home screen getting frozen where I can't click anything swipe, nothing. I have to turn the phone off and then back on. There is no reason I should be having problems comparable to my old XP machine on a mobile phone. Note: I hardly have any apps installed and my memory is more than half free.

If I were you, stick with the iPhone. I'm ditching the ****ty Android and the G1. Even if its just the G1s hardware to me the software is not something I'd want either. I've played around with my friends 3GS and iPod Touch and everything acts as you think it should.

One of my co-workers is getting the Motorola Droid when it comes out. Anxious to see how it compares to the iPhone side-by-side.
#10 neodorian on 27 Oct 2009 - 19:40
Looks like they were demoing this on the HTC Dragon.
#11 coth on 27 Oct 2009 - 20:37
All this doesn't really worth of major version bumping

support for different screen sizes is very bad. they just keep all titles and all the same ui size in low resolutions. cheap work...
#12 Einlander on 27 Oct 2009 - 20:48
Microsoft needs to be doing updates at the speed Google/Apple do. Even if 6.5 is a stop gap measure at least dont let it stagnate till winmo 7. Also Microsoft needs to learn about OTA upgrades. That would make sure that all the phones kept up to date and mostly error free

Happy to see that Bluetooth OBEX will finally be included. For any G1 users, Cyanogen will be releasing a new G1 ROM tomorrow with OBEX support included. Awesome times

So if one goes from a WM phone to this phone, how will this sync with Windows operating system? Right now I sync all my OUTLOOK stuff to my phone. I take it that will not be the case with Android? What about apps, no windows apps for WM will work on this phone? I can only imagine the applications are limited at the moment for android.

Quite a bit more expensive than the N810, but it seems to rectify some of the major complaints I had with it.

I was totally about to comment on this. Google just has to do EVERYTHING differently. o.O

Very interesting. I don't really see anything huge added though. I do like the popup when you touch a contact that allows you to choose what you want to do with them without losing sight of your contact list just yet. That's one thing I really don't like with Windows Mobile.
