VideoLAN is an excellent multimedia player with it's own plugins for playing different formats, so it doesn't need any codecs to be installed. It works great for previewing partially downloaded files too as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

Updates Include:
  • Improved H.264 support (interlaced, speed improvements etc)
  • New hotkeys for crop and zoom
  • Systray support in skins (Windows only)
  • Support for Apple Remote control

This release is bad! Doesn't even open ISOs (dvd movies) when dragged in the VLC window. And it's old, the nightly builds are much more advanced that this POS!

They haven't released 0.8.6 for Linux yet, only 0.8.5 final 1.1-0

Converted to GOM Player yesterday.. far easier to use. Has all the little things this one has. Plays ISO's etc

I would advise not to download this ... very buggy.

when will they make the default skin more useable????

Also, ive been having mounting problems with vlc recently... when i drag disk images in it often is very jerky and i end up mounting in daemon tools =S

still is a great program, just wish they'd hurry up with the updates! = P

It's a media player not a disc mounting program. It's a player that plays music, videos, dvds.

Stupid in the heads here.

no support for .rm files? they are getting irritating, people should just boycott real media for its lack of support.

Why boycott Real Media files? rmvb files offer tremendous quality in a small size. We should boycott the VLC player, since Gom and Crystal and KMP and BsPlayer all play Real files.

The issue has been resolved in a newer nightly build. Go get it, leave the official test1 version to rot, it's too flawed.

will they ever make it so that when you click on the seek bar it will jump straight there where you want, instead of jumping almost randomly??
#12.1 Post-It Note on 28 Oct 2006 - 04:55
It's not random; it's jumping a set amount forwards or backwards everytime you click on the bar, just like when you click on the empty scrollbar places.
#12.2 Jugalator on 31 Oct 2006 - 15:31
I agree; that's among the most annoying features of the player.

And the strangest thing about that "feature" is that if you use a skin instead, it acts like in regular media players again!

If they could only give the user an option to make the position be set to where you clicked instead of X frames forward, this player would instantly become much more useful to me. I also don't want to use their skins because they're often really bad designed.
#13 Joshua-San on 29 Oct 2006 - 00:18
I never really liked this player. It's not because it sucks or whatever, nah it works. I just don't like the interface and how this program works. Sometimes it would even render a movie all wrong. I prefer MPlayer, but do try VLC Media Player and see if it does fit to your needs.
