Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging (IM) client for Linux, BSD, MacOS X, and Windows. It is compatible with AIM and ICQ (Oscar protocol), MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, SILC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, and Zephyr networks. Gaim users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more. Pidgin runs on a number of platforms, including Windows, Linux, and Qtopia (Sharp Zaurus and iPaq).

Lol Pidgin?
Why the name change?

Anyway, it's a nice IM client, I use it in Linux.

AIM finally got a bug in their butt and complained about the name.

AOL complained.

It's a better name though.

Me, too. I wasn't keen on the name change at first, but it's growing on me, and the new design & icons make it fit much better, as well.

I hate having to use Kopete on GNOME. It's so darned ugly (Pidgin is beautiful).

I wish they'd hurry up with the "power" features already!

I hope Gaim/ Pidgin can add more features,
such as webcam support, faster file transfer (in MSN... When using Gaim on Linux, file transfer is damn slow, 0.1kbps)...etc.

this is my messenger of choice although i hope this beta7 is noticeably more stable than the beta6 was cause on there site it says.... "While previous betas in the 2.0.0 series have been extremely stable, and we recommended their use, this release is actually of beta quality." .... i disagree with that cause i think earlier builds where more stable than beta6 was cause that crap crashed someone often for me.... usually it would not even run for a straight 24 hours before crashing... to me for it to be stable im expecting atleast 2-3days or so of non stop running. give or take a little.

hopefully pidgin will be much better in this area.

While it's more a fault of GTK+, I would love for them to try and make this look somewhat decent on Vista.

Why do you need a plugin? Just place a shortcut in the "Startup" folder.

The links are all messed up. Where it's Gaim, it should be Pidgin and the homepage is now http://www.pidgin.im/

As for the new symbol, it's quite funny, as it looks like a pigeon on drugs. (Irony: in Portugal, a common name for a blunt is 'pombo' (pigeon lit.), because it makes you fly.)
